    Statistics of football dynamics

    We investigate the dynamics of football matches. Our goal is to characterize statistically the temporal sequence of ball movements in this collective sport game, searching for traits of complex behavior. Data were collected over a variety of matches in South American, European and World championships throughout 2005 and 2006. We show that the statistics of ball touches presents power-law tails and can be described by qq-gamma distributions. To explain such behavior we propose a model that provides information on the characteristics of football dynamics. Furthermore, we discuss the statistics of duration of out-of-play intervals, not directly related to the previous scenario.Comment: 7 page

    Anomalous diffusion and anisotropic nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation

    We analyse a bidimensional nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation by considering an anisotropic case, whose diffusion coefficients are DxxθD_x \propto |x|^{-\theta} and DyyγD_y \propto |y|^{-\gamma} with θ,γR\theta, \gamma \in {\cal{R}}. In this context, we also investigate two situations with the drift force F(r,t)=(kxx,kyy)\vec{F}(\vec{r},t)=(-k_{x}x, -k_y y). The first one is characterized by kx/ky=(2+γ)/(2+θ)k_x/k_y=(2+\gamma)/(2+\theta) and the second is given by kx=kk_{x}=k and ky=0k_{y}=0. In these cases, we can verify an anomalous behavior induced in different directions by the drift force applied. The found results are exact and exhibit, in terms of the qq-exponentials, functions which emerge from the Tsallis formalism.     q-exponential, Weibull, and q-Weibull distributions: an empirical analysis

    In a comparative study, the q-exponential and Weibull distributions are employed to investigate frequency distributions of basketball baskets, cyclone victims, brand-name drugs by retail sales, and highway length. In order to analyze the intermediate cases, a distribution, the q-Weibull one, which interpolates the q-exponential and Weibull ones, is introduced. It is verified that the basketball baskets distribution is well described by a q-exponential, whereas the cyclone victims and brand-name drugs by retail sales ones are better adjusted by a Weibull distribution. On the other hand, for highway length the q-exponential and Weibull distributions do not give satisfactory adjustment, being necessary to employ the q-Weibull distribution. Furthermore, the introduction of this interpolating distribution gives an illumination from the point of view of the stretched exponential against inverse power law (q-exponential with q > 1) controversy.Comment: 6 pages, Latex.     Inhibition of Diacylglycerol kinase alpha restores TCR-induced diacylglycerol signaling and restimulation-induced cell death in XLP1 T lymphocytes

    X\u2010linked lymphoproliferative disease (XLP1) is a rare primary immunodeficiency associated with an unconstrained, life\u2010threatening expansion of CD8+ T cells following Epstein\u2010Barr virus (EBV) infection. XLP1 is caused by mutations in SAP, an adaptor protein that mediates signaling through the SLAM family receptors. SAP\u2010deficient cells exhibit impaired T cell receptor (TCR) restimulation\u2010 induced cell death (RICD), a key physiological process in maintaining lymphocyte homeostasis. We previously showed that SAP has a critical role in TCR\u2010induced inhibition of diacylglycerol kinase alpha (DGK\u3b1), which phosphorylates diacylglycerol (DAG) to phosphatidic acid, acting as a major regulator of T cell signaling. Here, we show that in SAP\u2010deficient Jurkat cells, DGK\u3b1 activity impairs immune synapse (IS) formation, MTOC reorientation and affects the integrity of DAG gradient. By taking advantage of confocal live\u2010cell imaging, we found that RNAi\u2010mediated silencing or pharmacological inhibition of DGK\u3b1 in SAP\u2010deficient cells rescues both immune synapse formation and MTOC repositioning, and the subsequent DAG accumulation at the IS. Inhibition/silencing of DGK\u3b1 was also sufficient to restore PKC\uf0e8\uf020and RasGRP1 recruitment at the immune synapse, as well as ERK1/2 activation and IL\u20102 production/IL\u20102 receptor membrane exposure in SAP knockdown primary T cells. Notably, DGK\u3b1 blockade specifically reestablished RICD in both SAP\u2010 silenced cells and XLP1 patients\u2019 T cells by restoring RSK\u2010mediated induction and phosphorylation of the pro\u2010apoptotic genes Nur77 and Nor1. Furthermore, in vivo inhibition of DGK\u3b1 prevented aberrant CD8+ T cell expansion, TNF\uf0e1\uf020and IFN\uf0e3\uf020production as well as tissue infiltration in Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus\u2010infected SAP KO mice, a mouse model of XLP1. Altogether, these data demonstrates that DGK\u3b1 inhibition, by increasing localized DAG signaling at the IS, restores RICD in SAP deficient cells. In vivo, this limits the CD8+ T cell expansion and tissue damage that characterize XLP1. Collectively, these data highlight the key role for the SAP\u2010mediated DGK\u3b1 inhibition in regulating T lymphocyte homeostasis and highlight DGK\uf0e1\uf020as an attractive therapeutic target in XLP1 patients
