    Local Weyl modules for equivariant map algebras with free abelian group actions

    Suppose a finite group acts on a scheme X and a finite-dimensional Lie algebra g. The associated equivariant map algebra is the Lie algebra of equivariant regular maps from X to g. Examples include generalized current algebras and (twisted) multiloop algebras. Local Weyl modules play an important role in the theory of finite-dimensional representations of loop algebras and quantum affine algebras. In the current paper, we extend the definition of local Weyl modules (previously defined only for generalized current algebras and twisted loop algebras) to the setting of equivariant map algebras where g is semisimple, X is affine of finite type, and the group is abelian and acts freely on X. We do so by defining twisting and untwisting functors, which are isomorphisms between certain categories of representations of equivariant map algebras and their untwisted analogues. We also show that other properties of local Weyl modules (e.g. their characterization by homological properties and a tensor product property) extend to the more general setting considered in the current paper.Comment: 18 pages. v2: Minor correction

    Long-term striatal overexpression of GDNF selectively downregulates tyrosine hydroxylase in the intact nigrostriatal dopamine system.

    Sustained neurotrophic factor treatment in neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease is likely to affect both degenerating and intact neurons. To investigate the effect of long-term glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) overexpression on intact nigrostriatal dopamine neurons, we injected a recombinant lentiviral vector encoding GDNF, or green fluorescent protein, in the right striatum of young adult rats. Thirteen months after viral injection GDNF levels were 4.5 ng/mg tissue in the striatum and 0.9 ng/mg in the substantia nigra as measured by ELISA, representing a 25-100-fold increase above control vector- or nontransduced tissue. GDNF overexpression significantly reduced tyrosine hydroxylase mRNA levels (by 39-72%) in the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental area neurons, and the optical density of tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive innervation in the striatum was reduced by 25-52% with the most prominent reductions appearing caudally. No significant reduction was seen in striatal vesicular monoamine transporter 2-immunoreactivity or [3H]mazindole binding autoradiography to dopamine uptake sites, two other presynaptic markers in dopamine axon terminals. The striatal D1 and D2 receptor binding as determined by [3H]SCH23390 and [3H]spiperone binding, respectively, was unaltered relative to the intact side in both treatment groups. Preproenkephalin mRNA levels in postsynaptic striatal neurons, which increase upon removal of striatal dopamine, were also unaffected by the GDNF treatment. Taken together our findings indicate that sustained GDNF administration to intact nigrostriatal dopamine neurons selectively reduces tyrosine hydroxylase expression, without altering striatal dopamine transmission to the extent that compensatory changes in several other components related to dopamine storage and signalling occur

    Wintertime subarctic new particle formation from Kola Peninsula sulfur emissions

    The metallurgical industry in the Kola Peninsula, north-west Russia, form, after Norilsk, Siberia, the second largest source of air pollution in the Arctic and subarctic domain. Sulfur dioxide (SO2/emissions from the ore smelters are transported to wide areas, including Finnish Lapland. We performed investigations on concentrations of SO2, aerosol precursor vapours, aerosol and ion cluster size distributions together with chemical composition measurements of freshly formed clusters at the SMEAR I station in Finnish Lapland relatively close (similar to 300 km) to the Kola Peninsula industrial sites during the winter 2019-2020. We show that highly concentrated SO2 from smelter emissions is converted to sulfuric acid (H2SO4/in sufficient concentrations to drive new particle formation hundreds of kilometres downwind from the emission sources, even at very low solar radiation intensities. Observed new particle formation is primarily initiated by H2SO4-ammonia (negative-)ion-induced nucleation. Particle growth to cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) sizes was concluded to result from sulfuric acid condensation. However, air mass advection had a large role in modifying aerosol size distributions, and other growth mechanisms and condensation of other compounds cannot be fully excluded. Our results demonstrate the dominance of SO2 emissions in controlling wintertime aerosol and CCN concentrations in the subarctic region with a heavily polluting industry.Peer reviewe

    Aripiprazole Augmentation in the Treatment of Military-Related PTSD with Major Depression: a retrospective chart review

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In this chart review, we attempted to evaluate the benefits of adding aripiprazole in veterans with military-related PTSD and comorbid depression, who had been minimally or partially responsive to their existing medications.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A retrospective chart review of patients who received an open-label, flexible-dose, 12- week course of adjunctive aripiprazole was conducted in 27 military veterans meeting DSM-IV criteria for PTSD and comorbid major depression. Concomitant psychiatric medications continued unchanged, except for other antipsychotics which were discontinued prior to initiating aripiprazole. The primary outcome variable was a change from baseline in the PTSD checklist-military version (PCL-M) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>PTSD severity (Total PCL scores) decreased from 56.11 at baseline to 46.85 at 12-weeks (p < 0.0001 from Wilcoxon signed rank test) and the depression severity decreased from 30.44 at baseline to 20.67 at 12-weeks (p < 0.0001 from Wilcoxon signed rank test). Thirty seven percent (10/27) were considered responders, as defined by a decrease in total PCL scores of at least 20 percent and 19% (5/27) were considered as responders as defined by a decrease in total BDI score of at least 50%.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The addition of aripiprazole contributed to a reduction in both PTSD and depression symptomatology in a population that has traditionally demonstrated poor pharmacological response. Further investigations, including double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, are essential to confirm and further demonstrate the benefit of aripiprazole augmentation in the treatment of military related PTSD.</p

    Disability among Syrian refugees living in Sultanbeyli, Istanbul: Results from a population-based survey

    Objectives To estimate the prevalence of disability among Syrian refugees living in Sultanbeyli district, Istanbul and compare people with and without disabilities in terms of demographic and socio-economic characteristics. Methods Using the municipality refugee database as the sampling frame, 80 clusters of 50 people (aged 2+ years) were selected using probability proportionate to size sampling of clusters and random selection of households within clusters. Disability assessment included: i) self-reported difficulties in functioning (using the Washington Group Short Set-Enhanced tool and Child Functioning Modules), ii) Rapid Assessment of Musculoskeletal Impairment and iii) screening for symptoms of common mental disorders for children aged 8-17. Results The overall prevalence of disability was 24.7% (95% CI 22.1-27.4), when including people self-reporting a lot of difficulty/cannot do in at least functional domain (15%, 95% CI 13.1-17.2), moderate/severe MSI (8.7%, 95% CI 7.6-9.9), and/or symptomatic anxiety, depression and PTSD among children 8-17 (21.0%, 95% CI 18.2-23.9). Men with disabilities were significantly less likely to be in paid work compared to their peers without disabilities (aOR 0.3 95% CI 0.2-0.5). Overall 60% of households included at least one person with a disability. Households with at least one person with a disability had a significantly higher dependency ratio, lower proportion of working-age adults in paid work, and were more likely to be female headed and in receipt of social protection schemes (pConclusionDisability is common among Syrian refugees in Sultanbeyli. People with disabilities in this setting experience greater vulnerability to poverty and exclusion from work, highlighting an urgent need for inclusive services, programmes and policies that are developed and implemented in partnership with people with disabilities
