    The Size and Nature of Lyman alpha Forest Clouds Probed by QSO Pairs and Groups

    We describe a robust Bayesian statistical method for determining Lyman alpha forest cloud sizes in spherical and in thin disk geometries, using absorption in adjacent sightlines toward closely separated QSO pairs and groups, apply this method to the available data, and discuss implications of our results for models of Ly alpha clouds. Under the assumption of a population of uniform- size and unclustered clouds, the data from Q1343+2640A/B give a 99% confidence lower and upper bounds 61<R<533 kpc/h on the radius of spherical clouds at z about 1.8, with a median value of 149 kpc/h [(Ω0,Λ0)=(1,0)(\Omega_0, \Lambda_0) =(1,0)]. The baryonic mass of such large clouds is comparable to that of dwarf irregular galaxies. Their cosmic overdensity is close to the turn-around density but generally below the virialization density, suggesting a population of gravi- tationally bound but unvirialized protogalactic objects at z about 2. Their comoving volume density is similar to that of the faint blue galaxies (FBGs) at the limiting magnitude B of 26-27. The dynamical collapsing timescale of over- densities like these clouds is also comparable with the cosmic time difference between z of 2 to 1. Both populations of objects show similar weak clustering in space. All this evidence suggests a possible identification of Ly alpha clouds as the collapsing progenitors of the FBGs at z about 1. We also investigate the other QSO pairs: Q0307-1931/1932, Q0107-0232/0235, and the triplet of Q1623+268. Imposing an uniform W_0 > 0.4 A threshold on all linelists, we find a trend of larger inferred cloud radius with larger proper separation of QSO pairs, significant at the 3.4 sigma level. This indicates that the idealization of unclustered, uniform-sized clouds does not accurately describe the Ly alpha cloud population.Comment: Astrophysical Journal accepted; 28 pages of uuencoded gzip compressed postscript file (including 8 figures).     The Discovery of Extended Thermal X-ray Emission from PKS 2152-699: Evidence for a `Jet-cloud' Interaction

    A Chandra ACIS-S observation of PKS 2152-699 reveals thermal emission from a diffuse region around the core and a hotspot located 10" northeast from the core. This is the first detection of thermal X-ray radiation on kiloparsec scales from an extragalactic radio source. Two other hotspots located 47" north-northeast and 26" southwest from the core were also detected. Using a Raymond-Smith model, the first hotspot can be characterized with a thermal plasma temperature of 2.6×106\times10^6 K and an electron number density of 0.17 cm3^{-3}. These values correspond to a cooling time of about 1.6×107\times10^7 yr. In addition, an emission line from the hotspot, possibly Fe xxv, was detected at rest wavelength 10.04\AA. The thermal X-ray emission from the first hotspot is offset from the radio emission but is coincident with optical filaments detected with broadband filters of HST/WFPC2. The best explanation for the X-ray, radio, and optical emission is that of a `jet-cloud' interaction. The diffuse emission around the nucleus of PKS 2152-699 can be modeled as a thermal plasma with a temperature of 1.2×107\times10^7 K and a luminosity of 1.8×1041\times10^{41} erg s1^{-1}. This emission appears to be asymmetric with a small extension toward Hotspot A, similar to a jet. An optical hotspot (EELR) is seen less than an arcsecond away from this extension in the direction of the core. This indicates that the extension may be caused by the jet interacting with an inner ISM cloud, but entrainment of hot gas is unavoidable.     Identification of a galaxy responsible for a high-redshift Lyman-α absorption system

    Damped Lyman-α systems are high-column-density intergalactic clouds of hydrogen, the existence of which is inferred from absorption lines appearing in the emission spectra of distant quasars. The galaxies believed to be responsible for these absorption systems have been suggested as possible progenitors of the normal disk galaxies observed in the local Universe. Indeed, Lyman-α systems appear to contain a substantial fraction of the baryons known to exist in galaxies today. Here we report the optical detection of a galaxy (designated DLA2233 + 131) associated with a known damped Lyman-α absorption system at a redshift of z = 3.150. The properties of this galaxy correspond closely to those expected of a young disk galaxy in the early stages of formation, and show no evidence for an active nucleus. This finding gives strong support to the idea that damped Lyman-α systems represent a population of young galaxies at high red-shifts

    A systematic review on biomonitoring of individuals living near or working at solid waste incinerator plants

    Background: Solid waste incinerators (SWI) emit several pollutants among which polychlorodibenzodioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorobiphenyls, metals, monocyclic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Aim of the study: To present a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature on human biological monitoring of exposure and effect following potential exposure to SWI pollutants to bring together evidences and to highlight strengths and deficiencies of the studies conducted so far. Methods: Relevant studies on biomonitoring of individuals living near or working at SWIs were selected through three steps: (1) a literature search in the Medline, CAplus, and Embase database; (2) the retrieved abstracts were screened by four independent reviewers; (3) the full text of the relevant papers was read, papers were pooled in studies, and then analyzed to highlight strengths and weaknesses. Studies with the strongest epidemiological design and/or the largest sample size were identified as reference studies. Results: One hundred and thirty-two papers, pooled in 82 studies, were included in the review: 67 on general population, 52 on SWI workers, and 14 on both groups. The most frequently investigated biomarkers were PCDD/Fs in plasma (87). Several studies presented limitations, such as a small samples size, scarce information on confounders, and a poor statistical analysis. Some earlier studies showed an increase of PCDD/Fs, lead, and PAHs in individuals (mainly workers) exposed to emissions from old SWIs; studies from the year 2000 showed no increase of biomarkers or biomarkers within the range of the general population; decreasing trends were observed in prospective studies. Conclusions: Most studies presented methodological pitfalls; reference studies showed no or a limited evidence of the impact of SWI on exposure and effect biomarkers

    Chandra Detection of X-ray Absorption Associated with a Damped Lyman Alpha System

    We have observed three quasars, PKS 1127-145, Q 1331+171 and Q0054+144, with the ACIS-S aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory, in order to measure soft X-ray absorption associated with intervening 21-cm and damped Lyα\alpha absorbers. For PKS 1127-145, we detect absorption which, if associated with an intervening z_{abs}=0.312 absorber, implies a metallicity of 23% solar. If the absorption is not at z_{abs}=0.312, then the metallicity is still constrained to be less than 23% solar. The advantage of the X-ray measurement is that the derived metallicity is insensitive to ionization, inclusion of an atom in a molecule, or depletion onto grains. The X-ray absorption is mostly due to oxygen, and is consistent with the oxygen abundance of 30% solar derived from optical nebular emission lines in a foreground galaxy at the redshift of the absorber. For Q1331+171 and Q 0054+144, only upper limits were obtained, although the exposure times were intentionally short, since for these two objects we were interested primarily in measuring flux levels to plan for future observations.     ESTIMATING VARIANCE FUNCTIONS FOR WEIGHTED LINEAR REGRESSION

    For linear models with heterogeneous error structure, four variance function models are examined for predicting the error structure in two loblolly pine data sets and one white oak data set. An index of fit and a simulation study were used to determine which models were best. The size of coefficients for linear and higher order terms varied drastically across different data sets, thus it is not desirable to recommend a general model containing both linear and higher order terms. The unspecified exponent model σ2vi = σ2(Di2 Hi)k 1 is recommended for all data sets considered. The k1 values ranged from 1.8 to 2.1. We recommend k1 = 2.0 for simplicity
