    Get PDF
Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is characterized by deficiencies in insulin action and secretion, and difficulties in regulating hepatic glucose production, which may lead to significant complications. Our aim was verify if DM carriers that are recipients of communication actions have a better adherence to treatment, and, consequently, a better control of the disease. Methods: It is a quantitative study of descriptive nature. The research was conducted in a diabetes association, and the sample consisted of 112 individuals who participated in the National Diabetes Campaign, promoted by this institution. A questionnaire consisting of 56 questions was used and was divided in three parts: Demographics; level of knowledge of the disease; and communication participation. Data was processed and analyzed using the statistical software EpiInfo, version 7.2. Results: 82.1% of the sample are in the 60 to 85 age group, 56.2% are females; 31.3% had 1 to 4 years of schooling and 30.3% are employed. It was found that 21.4% frequent AD (Diabetes Association) and the main mentioned complications of DM were: amputation; blindness and kidney problems. It was evidenced that attending an AD is correlated with better glycated hemoglobin results (HbA1c ? 7%). Conclusion: It is highlighted that DM carriers who are recipients of communication actions have a better adherence to treatment, and, consequently, a better control of the disease.

Genetic characterization of morphologically variant strains of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis

    Get PDF
Molecular characterization of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis variant strains that had been preserved under mineral oil for decades was carried out by random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis (RAPD). On P. brasiliensis variants in the transitional phase and strains with typical morphology, RAPD produced reproducible polymorphic amplification products that differentiated them. A dendrogram based on the generated RAPD patterns placed the 14 P. brasiliensis strains into five groups with similarity coefficients of 72%. A high correlation between the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of the strains was observed. A 750 bp-RAPD fragment found only in the wild-type phenotype strains was cloned and sequenced. Genetic similarity analysis using BLASTx suggested that this RAPD marker represents a putative domain of a hypothetical flavin-binding monooxygenase (FMO)-like protein of Neurospora crassa.FiocruzBritish Council Progra

    Get PDF
Background: Complete blood count is one of the most ordered tests in clinical and surgical practice. However, it is important to know how to properly interpret it. The aim of this study was to measure the level of knowledge that health professionals have concerning the proper interpretation of the CBC test. Methods and Findings: The article reports and analyzes the responses of questionnaires on the interpretation of CBC results applied in a sample of one hundred health professionals. A semi-structured tool was developed and composed of topics regarding sociodemographic data, a specific knowledge test on CBC, and a self-evaluation on the interpretation and the importance of the test. All participants scored less than 90% on the questionnaire, a result that was established as unsatisfactory regarding CBC interpretation. Only physicians and biomedical scientists showed suitable knowledge on the interpretation of hematological terms. Conclusion: Despite the fact CBC is one of the main tests in clinical routine, our results showed deficits in knowledge on the theme by health professionals. Perhaps these results may help to reinforce the importance of multidisciplinarity and also highlight the deficiencies of training in the different professions studied

Treatment of facial aging with calcium hydroxyapatite - filling and lifting concept

    Get PDF
The face is organized in five different layers (skin, muscles, supportive ligaments, fat pads and bones), which are continuous and interconnected with each other from the scalp to the neck. As a result of aging, changes occur in all its tissues and structures, triggering a cascade of effects in the adjacent areas. Actually, the more it is known about the loss of volume, the better it is to establish the target spots for volume replacement, with consequent more natural- and harmonious-looking outcomes. However, the skin is the outer envelope of the face, which, in the natural process of aging, has a lower capacity to completely accommodate any underlying volume loss or displacement. The result is the formation of creases and folds due to skin sagging. To describe the effects of the injection of calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) targeting two objectives at the same time: the restoration of volume loss to compensate the changes in the tridimensional structure and the improvement in skin texture caused by the stimulus to collagen synthesis, thus reducing the sagging of soft tissues envelope. Owing to the mechanism of action of CaHA, its application can be done in two differentiated and little invasive ways so that these objectives can be reached simultaneously. This technique can provide safe, natural and long-lasting rejuvenating effects. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.356983

Serum aldosterone levels in hemodialysis patients: a systematic review

    Get PDF
Background: According to the data provided by the Brazilian Nephrology Society, between the years 2000 and 2011 the number of dialysis patients gradually increased. It is known aldosterone levels contribute to the onset of hypertension given the fact it is related to the increase in sodium absorption with a resultant increase of volemia. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review regarding the relation between aldosterone levels and hemodialysis. Methods: A review was performed, based on the articles provided by databases Lilacs and Medline, with the descriptors “aldosterone†AND “hemodialysis†until the year 2014. Those articles with the descriptors in their titles or abstracts, or that evaluated the relation between aldosterone and hemodialysis in trials with humans were included. Findings: About 14 articles were excluded and 15 were included. Among the included articles, one was epidemiologic, five were clinical trials, two were prospective cohorts and seven were reviews. Conclusions: It was observed that aldosterone blockade in hemodialysis patients represents an important and safe therapeutic strategy owing to the consequent proteinuria and blood pressure reduction. These factors help reduce cardiovascular risk. Moreover, this strategy contributes to decrease renal injury, suggesting a beneficial effect on the prevention of chronic kidney disease

Abordagem laboratorial no diagnóstico da Rinite alérgica e asma

    Get PDF

Despite the advances on early screening techniques, getting to know the chronic kidney disease (CKD) prevalence in Brazil and worldwide remains a challenge for researchers. Aging, diabetes and hypertension are the main CKD causes in Brazil. The aim of the study was to evaluate the presence of urinary dipstick abnormalities in World Kidney Day campaign. This is a cross-sectional studyconducted at FMABC. This study was based on the answers to a kidney disease questionnaire and urinary dipstick test. A total of 205 patients were randomly invited to collect urine samples on World Kidney Day 2013. Among the 205 studied patients, 66.34% were women with mean age of 46.32 years. Around 34.14% of the patients were hypertensive and 9.75% diabetic. Urinalysis alterations were observed in 28.29% of patients. The group with urine alterations had older individuals (51.36 years) andmore diabetes (18.96%) with higher levels of glucose (143.2 mg/dl).  Brazilian population is getting older and diabetic which represent risk factors for the onset of CKD. The necessity of an early detection by means of specific campaigns is thus of great importance. The use of dipstick test for screening is an important tool for kidney disease diagnosis.
