Modeling an Aquifer: Numerical Solution to the Groundwater Flow Equation

We present a model of groundwater dynamics under stationary flow and governed by Darcy's Law of water motion through porous media, we apply it to study a 2D aquifer with water table of constant slope comprised of an homogeneous and isotropic media, the more realistic case of an homogeneous anisotropic soil is also considered. Taking into account some geophysical parameters we develop a computational routine, in the Finite Difference Method, that solves the resulting elliptic partial equation, both in a homogeneous isotropic and homogeneous anisotropic media. After calibration of the numerical model, this routine is used to begin a study of the Ayamonte-Huelva aquifer in Spain, a modest analysis of the system is given, we compute the average discharge vector as well as its root mean square as a first predictive approximation of the flux in this system, providing us a signal of the location of best exploitation; long term goal is to develop a complete computational tool for the analysis of groundwater dynamics.Comment: 13 pages and 12 figure

In this final project we have studied a set of solutions to detect dehydration that a person can suffer, in order to prevent future health problems. Currently, there are multiple sensors or devices that can help us in detecting dehydration, but most devices are high cost and complex operation. Therefore, we will focus on a simple and inexpensive method to detect dehydration and compare the color of the urine with a color chart. The objective of this project is to analyze a series of urine samples, through its color and the measurement of other parameters collected with these samples to obtain a reliable classification of them, and know what level of hydration or dehydration these people are. And so, to take appropriate measures to restore an optimal level of hydration if was necessary. This research was conducted across different samples collected from several people of different ages and gender, with no known health problems. With these samples was made labeling and classification, ending with the construction of a multiple linear regression model to check appropriateness.Ingeniería Técnica en Sistemas de Telecomunicació

La intertextualidad en los textos audiovisuales: el caso de Donkey Xote

    Get PDF
This paper analyses intertextuality and its functions in the film Donkey Xote (2007, José Pozo), an audiovisual adaptation for a double addressee (children/adults) of El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha (Cervantes, 1604). Intertextuality can be identified in most text types; it results in a receiver’s active role as cultural knowledge is required. The study proves that intertextual references contribute to constructing the discourse and they have also a didactic aim trying to introduce children playfully to a universal canonical work by placing them in a familiar context (many intertexts are kenotypes, that is, references to modernity within an antique framework). Moreover, the film includes a lot of intertextual elements, most of them with a humorous function, which are complex and are specifically addressed to an adult audience.

Synergy between the phage endolysin LysH5 and nisin to kill Staphylococcus aureus in pasteurized milk

Phage-encoded endolysins are recently considered as new biocontrol tools to inhibit pathogens in food. In this work, we have studied the ionic requirements for optimal lytic activity of LysH5, the endolysin encoded by the staphylococcal bacteriophage phi-SauS-IPLA88. LysH5 activity was inhibited by the presence of Mn++ and Zn++ and enhanced by Ca++, Mg++ and NaCl. When LysH5 was combined with nisin, a bacteriocin currently used as a biopreservative in food, a strong synergistic effect was observed. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations of nisin and LysH5 were reduced 64- and 16-fold, respectively, as determined in checkerboard microtitre tests. In addition, nisin enhanced 8-fold the lytic activity of LysH5 on cell suspensions. The synergy observed in vitro was confirmed in challenge assays in pasteurized milk contaminated with S. aureus Sa9. Clearance of the pathogen was only achieved by the combined activity of both antimicrobials. As far as we know, this is the first study that exploits the possibilities of hurdle technology combining a phage-encoded endolysin and the bacteriocin nisin for efficient S. aureus inhibition in milk. This research study was supported by grant AGL2009-13144-C02-01 from the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain and IB08-052 from FICYT (Regional Government of Asturias).Peer reviewe

Nasopalatine Duct Cyst: A Case Report

    Get PDF
Nasopalatine duct cysts are the most common cysts of non-odontogenic origin. On many occasions, their clinical and radiographic characteristics lead to a precise presumptive diagnosis, however, when they reach a large size, are displaced from the midline or the adjacent teeth have undergone previous endodontic treatment, the diagnosis can be difficult and lead to totally erroneous therapeutic options, with aesthetic and functional consequences, therefore, the general dentist must know this pathology and its treatment. The main objective of this study was to describe a clinical case suffering from the disease. A 41-year-old female patient is presented, who came to the consulting room due to two months old inflammation and slight pain in the anterior palate. The X-rays showed a round radiolucent image, approximately 1 cm in diameter in the maxillary midline, with a radiopaque halo, in apparent relation to 1.1 and 2.1, both teeths with preserved vitality. Enucleation of the lesion was performed through a scalloped incision and elevation of the palatal mucoperiosteal flap with primary closure. The histopathological study confirmed the diagnosis. Follow-up is maintained in consultation with the patient. &nbsp

Copper Glufosinate-Based Metal−Organic Framework as a Novel Multifunctional Agrochemical

    Get PDF
Pesticides are agrochemical compounds used to kill pests (insects, rodents, fungi, or unwanted plants), which are key to meet the world food demand. Regrettably, some important issues associated with their widespread/extensive use (contamination, bioaccumulation, and development of pest resistances) demand a reduction in the amount of pesticide applied in crop protection. Among the novel technologies used to combat the deterioration of our environment, metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as innovative and promising materials in agroindustry since they possess several features (high porosity, functionalizable cavities, ecofriendly composition, etc.) that make them excellent candidates for the controlled release of pesticides. Moving toward a sustainable development, in this work, we originally describe the use of pesticides as building blocks for the MOF construction, leading to a new type of agricultural applied MOFs (or AgroMOFs). Particularly, we have prepared a novel 2D-MOF (namely, GR-MOF-7) based on the herbicide glufosinate and the widely used antibacterial and fungicide Cu2+. GR-MOF-7 crystallizes attaining a monoclinic P21/c space group, and the asymmetric unit is composed of one independent Cu2+ ion and one molecule of the Glu2− ligand. Considering the significant antibacterial activity of Cu-based compounds in agriculture, the potential combined bactericidal and herbicidal effect of GR-MOF-7 was investigated. GR-MOF-7 shows an important antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli (involved in agricultural animal infections), improving the results obtained with its individual or even physical mixed precursors [glufosinate and Cu(NO3)2]. It is also an effective pesticide against germination and plant growth of the weed Raphanus sativus, an invasive species in berries and vines crops, demonstrating that the construction of MOFs based on herbicide and antibacterial/antifungal units is a promising strategy to achieve multifunctional agrochemicals. To the best of our knowledge, this first report on the synthesis of an MOF based on agrochemicals (what we have named AgroMOF) opens new ways on the safe and efficient MOF application in agriculture.project MOFseidon PID2019-104228RB-I00Juan de la Cierva incorporation JC2019-038894-I and Multifunctional Metallodrugs in Diagnosis and Therapy Network (MICIU) RED2018-102471-TComunidad de MadridEuropean Regional Development Fund-FEDER 2014-2020-OE REACTUEUniversidad de Granada/CBUAEuropean Union NextGenerationEU/PRT

'Artilysation' of endolysin λSa2lys strongly improves its enzymatic and antibacterial activity against streptococci

    Get PDF
Endolysins constitute a promising class of antibacterials against Gram-positive bacteria. Recently, endolysins have been engineered with selected peptides to obtain a new generation of lytic proteins, Artilysins, with specific activity against Gram-negative bacteria. Here, we demonstrate that artilysation can also be used to enhance the antibacterial activity of endolysins against Gram-positive bacteria and to reduce the dependence on external conditions. Art-240, a chimeric protein of the anti-streptococcal endolysin λSa2lys and the polycationic peptide PCNP, shows a similar species specificity as the parental endolysin, but the bactericidal activity against streptococci increases and is less affected by elevated NaCl concentrations and pH variations. Time-kill experiments and time-lapse microscopy demonstrate that the killing rate of Art-240 is approximately two-fold higher compared to wildtype endolysin λSa2lys, with a reduction in viable bacteria of 3 log units after 10 min. In addition, lower doses of Art-240 are required to achieve the same bactericidal effect. This research study was supported by grants AGL2012-40194-C02-01 (Ministry of Science and Innovation, Spain), FEDER founds and GRUPIN14-139 (Program of Science, Technology and Innovation 2013–2017, Principado de Asturias, Spain), bacteriophage network FAGOMA and research grant 1.5.171.15N of the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO).
