    Contact dermatitis to acrylates and secondary nail fungal infection in 22 year old female patient – a case report

    Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disease resulting from repeated contact with allergens or irritants. Prevalence of adverse reactions to acrylates monomers is still rising due to their wide use in medical and cosmetics industry. The nail symptoms, including e.g. onycholysis, hyperkeratosis or nail plate discoloration can be indicative of different diagnoses like psoriasis, mycobacterial infections or contact dermatitis. Diagnosis is not always obvious, as exemplified by the patient’s history. The aim of the study was to describe a case of contact dermatitis to acrylates associated with secondary fungal nail infection.     Effect of Rosa gorenkensis Besser aqueous extracts on germination and early growth of native plant species

    In Europe, Rosa gorenkensis Besser is considered an invasive species. However, its negative impact on native flora components or other habitat components has not been described so far. In the experiment, the germination reactions of mono- and dicotyledonous plant seeds to the aqueous extracts of R. gorenkensis were investigated to determine the allelopathic potential of this plant. Seeds of common plants – wild-growing Festuca rubra L. and cultivated Raphanus sativus L. var. radicula Pers. cv. ‘Rowa’ were treated with aqueous extracts from the roots, stalks, leaves, and flowers of rosa at concentrations of 1%, 2.5%, and 5%. Along with the increase in the concentration of allelochemical compounds in the extracts, the negative influence of the extracts on the germination capacity of the tested seeds species was found. Regardless of the type of extract, inhibition of the growth of the underground and aboveground parts of seedlings was also observed. Changes in biomass and water content, depending on the concentration and type of the extract, were found. The greatest differences in the electrolytes leakage in seedlings watered with 5% extracts were revealed. The study showed that the aqueous extracts of leaves and flowers of this species had the greatest allelopathic potential

    NAS-50 and NAS-40 : new scales for the assessment of self-control

    In this paper, we present a new questionnaire for the assessment of self-control as an individual trait. We describe the process of construction of this assessment tool. We also report the results of relevant validation studies. The questionnaire has two independent versions, one based on self-reports (NAS-50) and another one based on other-reports (NAS-40). The first version consists of five subscales (10 items each), called Initiative and Persistence (IP), Proactive Control (PC), Switching and Flexibility (SF), Inhibition and Adjournment (IA), and Goal Maintenance (GM). Seven samples of participants (N = 934 altogether) took part in the validation study. The second version has not been split into subscales. Both versions obtained satisfactory indices of internal consistency, assessed with Cronbach’s alpha (for NAS- 50 total score a = .861, for the subscales a between .726 and .867; for NAS-40 a = .844). The NAS-50 and NAS-40 scores were highly correlated with other measures of self-control, including Tangney, Baumeister, and Boone’s (2004) self-control scale. They also proved to be entirely independent of general intelligence. In conclusion, both versions can be regarded reliable and valid enough, and therefore suitable for the assessment of trait self-control for research purposes

    Creation of a TILLING population in barley after chemical mutagenesis with sodium azide and MNU

    Since the development of the Targeting Induced Local Lesions in Genome (TILLING) strategy, it has been applied in both plants and animals in many studies. The creation of an appropriate population is the first and most crucial step of TILLING. The goal is to obtain a highly mutagenized population that allows many mutations in any gene of interest to be found. Therefore, an effective method of mutation induction should be developed. A high mutation density is associated with saving time, costs, and the labor required for the development of a TILLING platform. The proper handling of the mutated generations, the establishment of a seed bank, and the development of a DNA library are essential for creating a TILLING population. The database in which all of the data from the molecular and phenotypic analyses are collected is a very useful tool for maintaining such population. Once developed, a TILLING population can serve as a renewable resource of mutations for research that uses both forward and reverse genetic approaches.     TILLING (Targeting Induced Local Lesions IN Genomes) is a strategy used for functional analysis of genes that combines the classical mutagenesis and a rapid, high-throughput identification of mutations within a gene of interest. TILLING has been initially developed as a discovery platform for functional genomics, but soon it has become a valuable tool in development of desired alleles for crop breeding, alternative to transgenic approach. Here we present the HorTILLUS (Hordeum—TILLING—University of Silesia) population created for spring barley cultivar “Sebastian” after double-treatment of seeds with two chemical mutagens: sodium azide (NaN3) and N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU). The population comprises more than 9,600 M2 plants from which DNA was isolated, seeds harvested, vacuum-packed, and deposited in seed bank. M3 progeny of 3,481 M2 individuals was grown in the field and phenotyped. The screening for mutations was performed for 32 genes related to different aspects of plant growth and development. For each gene fragment, 3,072–6,912 M2 plants were used for mutation identification using LI-COR sequencer. In total, 382 mutations were found in 182.2Mb screened. The average mutation density in the HorTILLUS, estimated as 1 mutation per 477 kb, is among the highest mutation densities reported for barley. The majority of mutations were G/C to A/T transitions, however about 8% transversions were also detected. Sixty-one percent of mutations found in coding regions were missense, 37.5% silent and 1.1% nonsense. In each gene, the missense mutations with a potential effect on protein function were identified. The HorTILLUS platformis the largest of the TILLING populations reported for barley and best characterized. The population proved to be a useful tool, both in functional genomic studies and in forward selection of barley mutants with required phenotypic changes. We are constantly renewing the HorTILLUS population, which makes it a permanent source of new mutations.We offer the usage of this valuable resource to the interested barley researchers on cooperative basis

    Mechanical thrombectomy in acute stroke – Five years of experience in Poland

    Objectives Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is not reimbursed by the Polish public health system. We present a description of 5 years of experience with MT in acute stroke in Comprehensive Stroke Centers (CSCs) in Poland. Methods and results We retrospectively analyzed the results of a structured questionnaire from 23 out of 25 identified CSCs and 22 data sets that include 61 clinical, radiological and outcome measures. Results Most of the CSCs (74%) were founded at University Hospitals and most (65.2%) work round the clock. In 78.3% of them, the working teams are composed of neurologists and neuro-radiologists. All CSCs perform CT and angio-CT before MT. In total 586 patients were subjected to MT and data from 531 of them were analyzed. Mean time laps from stroke onset to groin puncture was 250±99min. 90.3% of the studied patients had MT within 6h from stroke onset; 59.3% of them were treated with IV rt-PA prior to MT; 15.1% had IA rt-PA during MT and 4.7% – emergent stenting of a large vessel. M1 of MCA was occluded in 47.8% of cases. The Solitaire device was used in 53% of cases. Successful recanalization (TICI2b–TICI3) was achieved in 64.6% of cases and 53.4% of patients did not experience hemorrhagic transformation. Clinical improvement on discharge was noticed in 53.7% of cases, futile recanalization – in 30.7%, mRS of 0–2 – in 31.4% and mRS of 6 in 22% of cases. Conclusion Our results can help harmonize standards for MT in Poland according to international guidelines

    Clinical course and outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection in multiple sclerosis patients treated with disease-modifying therapies — the Polish experience

    Introduction. The aim of this study was to report the course and outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients treated with disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) in Poland. A major concern for neurologists worldwide is the course and outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with MS treated with different DMTs. Although initial studies do not suggest an unfavourable course of infection in this group of patients, the data is limited.Materials and methods. This study included 396 MS patients treated with DMTs and confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection from 28 Polish MS centres. Information concerning patient demographics, comorbidities, clinical course of MS, current DMT use, as well as symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection, need for pharmacotherapy, oxygen therapy, and/or hospitalisation, and short-term outcomes was collected up to 30 January 2021. Additional data about COVID-19 cases in the general population in Poland was obtained from official reports of the Polish Ministry of Health.Results. There were 114 males (28.8%) and 282 females (71.2%). The median age was 39 years (IQR 13). The great majority of patients with MS exhibited relapsing-remitting course (372 patients; 93.9%). The median EDSS was 2 (SD 1.38), and the mean disease duration was 8.95 (IQR 8) years. Most of the MS patients were treated with dimethyl fumarate (164; 41.41%). Other DMTs were less frequently used: interferon beta (82; 20.70%), glatiramer acetate (42; 10.60%), natalizumab (35;8.84%), teriflunomide (25; 6.31%), ocrelizumab (20; 5.05%), fingolimod (16; 4.04), cladribine (5; 1.26%), mitoxantrone (3; 0.76%), ozanimod (3; 0.76%), and alemtuzumab (1; 0.25%). The overall hospitalisation rate due to COVID-19 in the cohort was 6.81% (27 patients). Only one patient (0.3%) died due to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and three (0.76%) patients were treated with mechanical ventilation; 106 (26.8%) patients had at least one comorbid condition. There were no significant differences in the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection regarding patient age, duration of the disease, degree of disability (EDSS), lymphocyte count, or type of DMT used.Conclusions and clinical implications. Most MS patients included in this study had a favourable course of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The hospitalisation rate and the mortality rate were not higher in the MS cohort compared to the general Polish population. Continued multicentre data collection is needed to increase the understanding of SARS-CoV-2 infection impact on the course of MS in patients treated with DMTs

    Although deltas and subaqueous fans are both formed in the same near-shore zones of basins, the hydraulic conditions for their formation, development and sedimentary records are different. The present review discusses the results of previously published studies of fan deltas (Gilbert-type deltas) and subaqueous fans of lacustrine and glaciolacustrine environments. The depositional mechanisms of deltas and subaqueous fans, textural and structural features of the lithofacies associations and their typical lithofacies are presented. The characteristics of subaqueous fans, which are still relatively poorly understood and are often overlooked in sedimentological interpretations of lacustrine sedimentary successions, receive particular attention. The palaeoenvironmental and lithological differences between deltas and subaqueous fans are highlighted

    Knowledge of Nursing Personnel of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship Hospitals on Nosocomial Infections

    Introduction: Nosocomial (also known as hospital-acquired) infections are understood as infections which develop during patient’s stay in hospital, but are not the direct cause of hospitalisation. The aim of the study: The purpose of the paper was to determine the knowledge of the nursing personnel from Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship onnosocomial infections, prevention and methods of combating them. Other addressed issues included the analysis of the work yeas and education level as related to the state of nurses' knowledge on nosocomial infections, and what are the reasons for insufficient prevention of diseases. Material and methods: The study included 208 nurses from Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. Out of 208 questionnaires, 180 were completed correctly, the remaining 28 were answered incorrectly or incompletely, which resulted in their rejection. The statistical analysis was conducted using the Pearson Chi-squared method, with the significance level p>0.01 assumed to be insignificant. The study involved 124 women and 56 men. The youngest respondent was 23 years old and the oldest was 59 years old. There were 36 respondents below 30 years of age(20%), 88 in the 31-40 age group (48.9%), 56 in the 41-60 age group (31.1%). Results 1. The knowledge of the intermediate personnel about hospital-acquired infections is satisfactory. 2. Job seniority is not statistically significant with regard to the knowledge level on nosocomial infections. 3. The research revealeda statistically significant correlation between the knowledge level of the secondary staff and their education. 4. The study results show that the most common causes of insufficient knowledge on preventing hospital-acquired infections are staff shortages and inadequatefinancial resources
