Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate by Heat-Catalyst and Gamma-Irradiation Methods
Methyl methacrylate (MMA) was bulk-polymerized with 0 to 4% crosslinker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, EGDM, and trimethylol propane trimethacrylate, TMPTM), initiated with 0.05 to 5% catalyst (Vazo) at 65-75 C or 0.1 to 1 Mrad/hr gamma radiation at 20 C. Heat-catalyzed MMA conversion to polymer vs. time was obtained directly from polymer mass, which indicated that about 90% conversion had occurred at the exothermic peak temperature. The time to the exothermic peak temperature was used to determine sample polymerization time. The over-all polymerization rate varied with the half-power of initiator concentration. An Arrhenius plot of the initiator-time data gave an activation energy of 18 kcal/mole. A log-log relationship was found between crosslinker concentration and polymerization time over the 65-75 C temperature and 0.1-0.4% initiator range. The crosslinkers were found equally efficient in reducing polymerization time. Peak exothermie temperature varied directly with time, irrespective of the initiator and crosslinker concentrations or bath temperature except as they affected time. In the irradiation tests, the crosslinkers exhibited different data fits: log-log with EGDM and semilog for TMPTM. The time-dose rate equation for uncrosslinked MMA was analogous to that for heat-catalyzed polymerization. Molecular weight of uncrosslinked PMMA was determined as a function of temperature and catalyst concentration, and dose rate. Similar molecular weights were obtained for heat-catalyzed polymerization at 65 C and gamma irradiation at 20 C for numerically the same initiator concentration (%) and does rate (Mrad/hr)
Realism, Objectivity, and Evaluation
I discuss Benacerraf's epistemological challenge for realism about areas like mathematics, metalogic, and modality, and describe the pluralist response to it. I explain why normative pluralism is peculiarly unsatisfactory, and use this explanation to formulate a radicalization of Moore's Open Question Argument. According to the argument, the facts -- even the normative facts -- fail to settle the practical questions at the center of our normative lives. One lesson is that the concepts of realism and objectivity, which are widely identified, are actually in tension
Single Production in Collisions at the NLC
Single production in collisions at the NLC can be used to
probe the Majorana nature of the heavy neutrinos present in the Left-Right
Symmetric Model below the kinematic threshold for their direct production. For
colliders in the TeV range, typical cross sections of order
are obtained, depending on the specific choice of model parameters.
Backgrounds arising from Standard Model processes are shown to be small. This
analysis greatly extends the kinematic range of previous studies wherein the

Peer review quality and transparency of the peer-review process in open access and subscription journals
BACKGROUND:Recent controversies highlighting substandard peer review in Open Access (OA) and traditional (subscription) journals have increased the need for authors, funders, publishers, and institutions to assure quality of peer-review in academic journals. I propose that transparency of the peer-review process may be seen as an indicator of the quality of peer-review, and develop and validate a tool enabling different stakeholders to assess transparency of the peer-review process. METHODS AND FINDINGS:Based on editorial guidelines and best practices, I developed a 14-item tool to rate transparency of the peer-review process on the basis of journals' websites. In Study 1, a random sample of 231 authors of papers in 92 subscription journals in different fields rated transparency of the journals that published their work. Authors' ratings of the transparency were positively associated with quality of the peer-review process but unrelated to journal's impact factors. In Study 2, 20 experts on OA publishing assessed the transparency of established (non-OA) journals, OA journals categorized as being published by potential predatory publishers, and journals from the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Results show high reliability across items (α = .91) and sufficient reliability across raters. Ratings differentiated the three types of journals well. In Study 3, academic librarians rated a random sample of 140 DOAJ journals and another 54 journals that had received a hoax paper written by Bohannon to test peer-review quality. Journals with higher transparency ratings were less likely to accept the flawed paper and showed higher impact as measured by the h5 index from Google Scholar. CONCLUSIONS:The tool to assess transparency of the peer-review process at academic journals shows promising reliability and validity. The transparency of the peer-review process can be seen as an indicator of peer-review quality allowing the tool to be used to predict academic quality in new journals
Expression of divIB of Bacillus subtilis during vegetative growth
Expression of the division initiation gene, divIB, of Bacillus subtilis vegetative growth was examined. lacZ fusion studies and transcription start point mapping have established that a sigma A promoter proximal to divIB is utilized in vivo. The -10 region of this promoter, which is located 93 bp upstream of the start codon, has been defined precisely by site-directed mutagenesis that destroys the promoter. Examination of transcripts by Northern (RNA) blotting has shown that there are at least two transcripts for divIB. The established proximal promoter was found to give rise to a very minor transcript which could not be convincingly demonstrated in wild-type cells but which became apparent upon insertion of a plasmid into the chromosome just upstream of this promoter. The major transcript for divIB originated from a site several kb upstream of the gene and is probably the same as the long polycistronic message also traversing the murD-spoVE-murG genes that was identified previously by others (A.D. Henriques, H. de Lencastre, and P.J. Piggot, Biochimie 74:735-748, 1992). Transcription from the proximal promoter alone, in an upstream-deletion mutant strain, provided sufficient DivIB for normal growth and division as well as sporulation
Towards a Model-Independent Analysis of Rare Decays
Motivated by the experimental accessibility of rare decays in the ongoing
and planned experiments, we propose to undertake a model-independent analysis
of the inclusive decay rates and distributions in the processes \bgamaxs~ and
\Bsell ~( or ). We show how measurements of the decay rates and
distributions in these processes would allow us to extract the magnitude and
sign of the dominant Wilson coefficients of the magnetic moment operator \mb
\bar{s}_L \sigma_{\mu \nu} b_R F^{\mu \nu } and the four-fermion operators
and . Non-standard-model
effects could thus manifest themselves at low energy in rare decays through
the Wilson coefficient having values distinctly different from their
standard-model counterparts. We illustrate this possibility using the examples
of the two-doublet Higgs models and the minimal supersymmetric models. The
dilepton invariant mass spectrum and the forward-backward asymmetry of
in the centre-of-mass system of the dilepton pair in the decay \Bsell ~are also
worked out for the standard model and some representative solutions for the

Preliminary study of the reliability of imaging charge coupled devices
Imaging CCDs are capable of low light level response and high signal-to-noise ratios. In space applications they offer the user the ability to achieve extremely high resolution imaging with minimum circuitry in the photo sensor array. This work relates the CCD121H Fairchild device to the fundamentals of CCDs and the representative technologies. Several failure modes are described, construction is analyzed and test results are reported. In addition, the relationship of the device reliability to packaging principles is analyzed and test data presented. Finally, a test program is defined for more general reliability evaluation of CCDs
Supernova pointing with low- and high-energy neutrino detectors
A future galactic SN can be located several hours before the optical
explosion through the MeV-neutrino burst, exploiting the directionality of
--scattering in a water Cherenkov detector such as Super-Kamiokande. We
study the statistical efficiency of different methods for extracting the SN
direction and identify a simple approach that is nearly optimal, yet
independent of the exact SN neutrino spectra. We use this method to quantify
the increase in the pointing accuracy by the addition of gadolinium to water,
which tags neutrons from the inverse beta decay background. We also study the
dependence of the pointing accuracy on neutrino mixing scenarios and initial
spectra. We find that in the ``worst case'' scenario the pointing accuracy is
at 95% C.L. in the absence of tagging, which improves to
with a tagging efficiency of 95%. At a megaton detector, this accuracy can be
as good as . A TeV-neutrino burst is also expected to be emitted
contemporaneously with the SN optical explosion, which may locate the SN to
within a few tenths of a degree at a future km high-energy neutrino
telescope. If the SN is not seen in the electromagnetic spectrum, locating it
in the sky through neutrinos is crucial for identifying the Earth matter

Failure of JoAnne's Global Fit to the Wilson Coefficients in Rare B Decays: A Left-Right Model Example
In the Standard Model and many of its extensions, it is well known that all
of the observables associated with the rare decays and can be expressed in terms of the three Wilson coefficients,
, together with several universal kinematic
functions. In particular it has been shown that the numerical values of these
coefficients can be uniquely extracted by a three parameter global fit to data
obtainable at future -factories given sufficient integrated luminosity. In
this paper we examine if such global fits are also sensitive to new operators
beyond those which correspond to the above coefficients, i.e., whether is it
possible that new operators can be of sufficient importance for the three
parameter fit to fail and for this to be experimentally observable. Using the
Left-Right Symmetric Model as an example of a scenario with an extended
operator basis, we demonstrate via Monte Carlo techniques that such a
possibility can indeed be realized. In some sense this potential failure of the
global fit approach can actually be one of its greatest successes in

Distribution and risk factors of canine haemotropic mycoplasmas in hunting dogs from southern Italy
Mycoplasma haemocanis (Mhc) and âCandidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvumâ (CMhp) are the main haemoplasma species known to infect dogs. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of haemoplasma species infections in hunting dogs from southern Italy and assess related risk factors. 1,433 hunting dogs living in Campania region were tested by qPCR assay. The prevalence was 19.9 %; 13.1 % for Mhc and 11.4 % for CMhp; 4.6 % showed a coinfection with both haemoplasma species. Statistical analysis revealed living in Salerno province (Mhc: OR 3.72; CMhp: OR 2.74), hound (Mhc: OR 5.26; CMhp: OR 8.46) and mixed breed (Mhc: OR 3.38; CMhp: OR 2.80), rural environment (Mhc: OR 12.58; CMhp: OR 10.38), wild mammal hunting (Mhc: OR 8.73; CMhp: OR 8.32), cohabitation with other animals (Mhc: OR 2.82; CMhp: OR 2.78) and large pack size (Mhc: OR 2.96; CMhp: OR 1.61) as risk factors for haemoplasmas. Male gender (OR 1.44) and tick infestation history (OR 1.40) represented risk factors only for Mhc, while adult age (2 7 years - OR 2.01; > 7 years - OR 1.84) and large body size (OR 1.48) were associated only to CMhp. Mhc infection was significantly associated to Babesia vogeli (p < 0.05) and Hepatozoon canis (p < 0.001), while CMhp with H. canis (p < 0.001). This study adds information on haemoplasma species distribution in hunting dogs in southern Italy. Outdoor lifestyle and contact with wild fauna, through greater exposure to tick infestation, or possibly wounds acquired during hunting or fighting, could be factors contributing to haemoplasma infections
