Machine-checked proofs of the design and implementation of a fault-tolerant circuit

A formally verified implementation of the 'oral messages' algorithm of Pease, Shostak, and Lamport is described. An abstract implementation of the algorithm is verified to achieve interactive consistency in the presence of faults. This abstract characterization is then mapped down to a hardware level implementation which inherits the fault-tolerant characteristics of the abstract version. All steps in the proof were checked with the Boyer-Moore theorem prover. A significant results is the demonstration of a fault-tolerant device that is formally specified and whose implementation is proved correct with respect to this specification. A significant simplifying assumption is that the redundant processors behave synchronously. A mechanically checked proof that the oral messages algorithm is 'optimal' in the sense that no algorithm which achieves agreement via similar message passing can tolerate a larger proportion of faulty processor is also described

Marijuana Users in Their Own Words: Explaining the Continuation and Cessation of Habitual Marijuana Use

This study is a qualitative examination of twenty current and former users of marijuana, using in-depth interviews as the units of analysis. The relationship between the participants’ perceived costs and rewards, type and amount of linguistic accounts used, as well as frequency of use are explored using Homans\u27 exchange theory and Lyman and Scott’s theory of accounts. Reasons for continuation, regulation, and cessation of use are also studied. It is found that the participants use marijuana for a varied amount of reasons; these reasons directly influence how they account for their behavior as well as their frequency of use, particularly whether or not they use marijuana on a daily basis

    Introduction

The Articles in this Symposium vividly demonstrate that the reason that the pornography debate is no longer at the forefront of national consciousness is surely not that the phenomenon itself has disappeared. Nor is it that we have achieved anything approaching consensus, for we cannot seem to agree even about what pornography is, much less about its harms or benefits. Nor is it even that we have suddenly discovered and begun to deploy, from tools long available in our legal arsenal, enforcement strategies promising cures less harmful than the disease. Quite the . contrary. As the editors of this journal have discerned,\u27 the dilemma posed by pornography to a free society persists, and it continues to raise a kaleidoscope of legal issues. The editors have solicited articles from authors with an astonishing array of viewpoints; each perspective generates useful insights into this most perplexing topic. I shall take the remainder of this Introduction to provide the reader with a brief road map to what follows, with the hope of facilitating a sense of where the pieces fit within the ongoing struggle to define the issues
