Comparative study of imipenem in severe infections.
Forty patients with severe bacterial infections due to micro-organisms known or presumed to be sensitive to both study antibiotics, were randomized to receive either imipenem with cilastatin, 500 mg/500 mg iv tid (20 patients), or cefotaxime, 2 g iv tid (20 patients). The types of infections observed were equally distributed between the 2 groups, and consisted of 18 complicated urinary tract infections, 9 pneumonia, 7 bone and soft tissue infections, 4 septicaemia of unknown origin and 2 intravenous-catheter-related septicaemia. In the imipenem group, 12 patients were bacteraemic, compared to 10 in the cefotaxime group. The micro-organisms observed were evenly distributed with Escherichia coli (22 cases) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (6 cases) being the most frequent. Sixteen patients were cured in the imipenem group and 15 in the cefotaxime group, while 2 and 2 improved, 2 and 1 relapsed and 0 and 2 did not respond to the therapy, respectively. In the imipenem group, no clinical side effects were observed while 5 patients had mild reactions in the cefotaxime group (2 fever, 1 skin rash, 1 oral candidiasis and 1 diarrhoea). Imipenem thus appeared as effective and well tolerated as cefotaxime in the treatment of severely infected patients
Recent African derivation of Chrysomya putoria from C. chloropyga and mitochondrial DNA paraphyly of cytochrome oxidase subunit one in blowflies of forensic importance
Chrysomya chloropyga (Wiedemann) and C. putoria (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are closely related Afrotropical blowflies that breed in carrion and latrines, reaching high density in association with humans and spreading to other continents. In some cases of human death, Chyrsomya specimens provide forensic clues. Because the immature stages of such flies are often difficult to identify taxonomically, it is useful to develop DNA-based tests for specimen identification. Therefore we attempted to distinguish between C. chloropyga and C. putoria using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence data from a 593-bp region of the gene for cytochrome oxidase subunit one (COI). Twelve specimens from each species yielded a total of five haplotypes, none being unique to C. putoria. Therefore it was not possible to distinguish between the two species using this locus. Maximum parsimony analysis indicated paraphyletic C. chloropyga mtDNA with C. putoria nested therein. Based on these and previously published data, we infer that C. putoria diverged very recently from C. chloropyga
Structural Information in Two-Dimensional Patterns: Entropy Convergence and Excess Entropy
We develop information-theoretic measures of spatial structure and pattern in
more than one dimension. As is well known, the entropy density of a
two-dimensional configuration can be efficiently and accurately estimated via a
converging sequence of conditional entropies. We show that the manner in which
these conditional entropies converge to their asymptotic value serves as a
measure of global correlation and structure for spatial systems in any
dimension. We compare and contrast entropy-convergence with mutual-information
and structure-factor techniques for quantifying and detecting spatial

Forward pi^0 Production and Associated Transverse Energy Flow in Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA
Deep-inelastic positron-proton interactions at low values of Bjorken-x down
to x \approx 4.10^-5 which give rise to high transverse momentum pi^0 mesons
are studied with the H1 experiment at HERA. The inclusive cross section for
pi^0 mesons produced at small angles with respect to the proton remnant (the
forward region) is presented as a function of the transverse momentum and
energy of the pi^0 and of the four-momentum transfer Q^2 and Bjorken-x.
Measurements are also presented of the transverse energy flow in events
containing a forward pi^0 meson. Hadronic final state calculations based on QCD
models implementing different parton evolution schemes are confronted with the

Amyloid binding and beyond: a new approach for Alzheimer's disease drug discovery targeting Aβo–PrPC binding and downstream pathways
Amyloid β oligomers (Aβo) are the main toxic species in Alzheimer's disease, which have been targeted for single drug treatment with very little success. In this work we report a new approach for identifying functional Aβo binding compounds. A tailored library of 971 fluorine containing compounds was selected by a computational method, developed to generate molecular diversity. These compounds were screened for Aβo binding by a combined 19F and STD NMR technique. Six hits were evaluated in three parallel biochemical and functional assays. Two compounds disrupted Aβo binding to its receptor PrPC in HEK293 cells. They reduced the pFyn levels triggered by Aβo treatment in neuroprogenitor cells derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC). Inhibitory effects on pTau production in cortical neurons derived from hiPSC were also observed. These drug-like compounds connect three of the pillars in Alzheimer's disease pathology, i.e. prion, Aβ and Tau, affecting three different pathways through specific binding to Aβo and are, indeed, promising candidates for further development
