Ect2/Pbl Acts via Rho and Polarity Proteins to Direct the Assembly of an Isotropic Actomyosin Cortex upon Mitotic Entry.
Entry into mitosis is accompanied by profound changes in cortical actomyosin organization. Here, we delineate a pathway downstream of the RhoGEF Pbl/Ect2 that directs this process in a model epithelium. Our data suggest that the release of Pbl/Ect2 from the nucleus at mitotic entry drives Rho-dependent activation of Myosin-II and, in parallel, induces a switch from Arp2/3 to Diaphanous-mediated cortical actin nucleation that depends on Cdc42, aPKC, and Par6. At the same time, the mitotic relocalization of these apical protein complexes to more lateral cell surfaces enables Cdc42/aPKC/Par6 to take on a mitosis-specific function-aiding the assembly of a relatively isotropic metaphase cortex. Together, these data reveal how the repolarization and remodeling of the actomyosin cortex are coordinated upon entry into mitosis to provide cells with the isotropic and rigid form they need to undergo faithful chromosome segregation and division in a crowded tissue environment
Dynamic cofilin phosphorylation in the control of lamellipodial actin homeostasis
During animal cell chemotaxis, signalling at the plasma membrane induces actin polymerisation to drive forward cell movement. Since the cellular pool of actin is limited, efficient protrusion formation also requires the coordinated disassembly of pre-existing actin filaments. To search for proteins that can monitor filamentous and globular actin levels to maintain the balance of polymerisation and disassembly, we followed changes in the proteome induced by RNA interference (RNAi)mediated alterations in actin signalling. This unbiased approach revealed an increase in the levels of an inactive, phosphorylated form of the actin-severing protein cofilin in cells unable to generate actin-based lamellipodia. Conversely, an increase in F-actin levels induced the dephosphorylation and activation of cofilin via activation of the Ssh phosphatase. Similarly, in the context of acute phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) signalling, dynamic changes in cofilin phosphorylation were found to depend on the Ssh phosphatase and on changes in lamellipodial Factin. These results indicate that changes in the extent of cofilin phosphorylation are regulated by Ssh in response to changes in the levels and/or organisation of F-actin. Together with the recent finding that Ssh phosphatase activity is augmented by F-actin binding, these results identify Ssh-dependent regulation of phosphorylated cofilin levels as an important feedback control mechanism that maintains actin filament homeostasis during actin signalling
Applications of ethylene vinyl acetate as an encapsulation material for terrestrial photovoltaic modules
Terrestrial photovoltaic modules must undergo substantial reductions in cost in order to become economically attractive as practical devices for large scale production of electricity. Part of the cost reductions must be realized by the encapsulation materials that are used to package, protect, and support the solar cells, electrical interconnects, and other ancillary components. As many of the encapsulation materials are polymeric, cost reductions necessitate the use of low cost polymers. The performance and status of ethylene vinyl acetate, a low cost polymer that is being investigated as an encapsulation material for terrestrial photovoltaic modules, are described
Octave-spanning single-cycle middle-infrared generation through optical parametric amplification in LiGaS<sub>2</sub>
We report the generation of extremely broadband and inherently phase-locked mid-infrared pulses covering the 5 to 11 µm region. The concept is based on two stages of optical parametric amplification starting from a 270-fs Yb:KGW laser source. A continuum seeded, second harmonic pumped pre-amplifier in β-BaB2O4 (BBO) produces tailored broadband near-infrared pulses that are subsequently mixed with the fundamental pump pulses in LiGaS2 (LGS) for mid-infrared generation and amplification. The pulse bandwidth and chirp is managed entirely by selected optical filters and bulk material. We find an overall quantum efficiency of 1% and a mid-infrared spectrum smoothly covering 5-11 µm with a pulse energy of 220 nJ at 50 kHz repetition rate. Electro-optic sampling with 12-fs long white-light pulses directly from self-compression in a YAG crystal reveals near-single-cycle mid-infrared pulses (32 fs) with passively stable carrier-envelope phase. Such pulses will be ideal for producing attosecond electron pulses or for advancing molecular fingerprint spectroscopy.publishe
Exact results on spin dynamics and multiple quantum dynamics in alternating spin-1/2 chains with XY-Hamiltonian at high temperatures
We extend the picture of a transfer of nuclear spin-1/2 polarization along a
homogeneous one-dimensional chain with the XY-Hamiltonian to the inhomogeneous
chain with alternating nearest neighbour couplings and alternating Larmor
frequencies. To this end, we calculate exactly the spectrum of the spin-1/2
XY-Hamiltonian of the alternating chain with an odd number of sites. The exact
spectrum of the XY-Hamiltonian is also applied to study the multiple quantum
(MQ) NMR dynamics of the alternating spin-1/2 chain. MQ NMR spectra are shown
to have the MQ coherences of zero and second orders just as in the case
of a homogeneous chain. The intensities of the MQ coherences are calculated.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
The multiple quantum NMR dynamics in systems of equivalent spins with the dipolar ordered initial state
The multiple quantum (MQ) NMR dynamics in the system of equivalent spins with
the dipolar ordered initial state is considered. The high symmetry of the MQ
Hamiltonian is used in order to develop the analytical and numerical methods
for an investigation of the MQ NMR dynamics in the systems consisting of
hundreds of spins from "the first principles". We obtain the dependence of the
intensities of the MQ NMR coherences on their orders (profiles of the MQ NMR
coherences) for the systems of spins. It is shown that these
profiles may be well approximated by the exponential distribution functions. We
also compare the MQ NMR dynamics in the systems of equivalent spins having two
different initial states, namely the dipolar ordered state and the thermal

Spatially resolved spectra of 3C galaxy nuclei
We present and discuss visible-wavelength long-slit spectra of four low
redshift 3C galaxies obtained with the STIS instrument on the Hubble Space
Telescope. The slit was aligned with near-nuclear jet-like structure seen in
HST images of the galaxies, to give unprecedented spatial resolution of the
galaxy inner regions. In 3C 135 and 3C 171, the spectra reveal clumpy emission
line structures that indicate outward motions of a few hundred km s
within a centrally illuminated and ionised biconical region. There may also be
some low-ionisation high-velocity material associated with 3C 135. In 3C 264
and 3C 78, the jets have blue featureless spectra consistent with their
proposed synchrotron origin. There is weak associated line emission in the
innermost part of the jets with mild outflow velocity. These jets are bright
and highly collimated only within a circumnuclear region of lower galaxy
luminosity, which is not dusty. We discuss the origins of these central regions

Uniformization and an Index Theorem for Elliptic Operators Associated with Diffeomorphisms of a Manifold
We consider the index problem for a wide class of nonlocal elliptic operators
on a smooth closed manifold, namely differential operators with shifts induced
by the action of an isometric diffeomorphism. The key to the solution is the
method of uniformization: We assign to the nonlocal problem a
pseudodifferential operator with the same index, acting in sections of an
infinite-dimensional vector bundle on a compact manifold. We then determine the
index in terms of topological invariants of the symbol, using the Atiyah-Singer

Evolution of spin entanglement and an entanglement witness in multiple-quantum NMR experiments
We investigate the evolution of entanglement in multiple-quantum (MQ) NMR
experiments in crystals with pairs of close nuclear spins-1/2. The initial
thermodynamic equilibrium state of the system in a strong external magnetic
field evolves under the non-secular part of the dipolar Hamiltonian. As a
result, MQ coherences of the zeroth and plus/minus second orders appear. A
simple condition for the emergence of entanglement is obtained. We show that
the measure of the spin pair entanglement, concurrence, coincides qualitatively
with the intensity of MQ coherences of the plus/minus second order and hence
the entanglement can be studied with MQ NMR methods. We introduce an
Entanglement Witness using MQ NMR coherences of the plus/minus second order.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
