    An exceptionally high wave at the CNR-ISMAR oceanographic tower in the Northern Adriatic Sea

    On December 15, 2009, a very high wave crest was recorded by a local camera at the CNR-ISMAR oceanographic tower, 15km offshore Venice in the Northern Adriatic Sea (Italy). The height of the estimated crest elevation appears well beyond the value (1,25.H-s) commonly used to identify a wave as freak. We document the wave event with a full description of the corresponding met-ocean conditions and related measurements, of which we provide a critical analysis

    Sleep and Tibialis Anterior Muscle Activity in Mice With Mild Hypoxia and Iron Deficiency: Implications for the Restless Legs Syndrome

    Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder that entails an urge to move with a circadian pattern during the evening/night. RLS may be accompanied by decreased sleep time and increased occurrence of periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS), which involve bursts of tibialis anterior (TA) muscle electromyogram (EMG). Mild hypoxia and non-anemic iron deficiency, a highly prevalent nutritional deficiency, are relatively unexplored factors in RLS pathophysiology. We tested whether mice exposed to mild hypoxia, alone or in combination with non-anemic iron deficiency, show decreased sleep time particularly in the light (rest) period and increased occurrence of TA EMG phasic events similar to human PLMS. Female C57BL/6J mice were fed diets with low or normal iron for 6 months from weaning and instrumented with electrodes to record the electroencephalogram and the EMG of both TA muscles. Mice were recorded in a whole-body plethysmograph while breathing a normoxic or mildly hypoxic (15% O2) gas mixture for 48 h. Hypoxia increased minute ventilation during sleep. The low-iron diet decreased liver and serum iron, leaving blood hemoglobin and brainstem iron levels unaffected. Hypoxia, either alone or in combination with non-anemic iron deficiency, decreased non-rapid-eye-movement (non-REM) sleep time, but this occurred irrespective of the light/dark period and was not associated with increased occurrence of TA EMG events during non-REM sleep. These results do not support the hypothesis that mild hypoxia is sufficient to cause signs of RLS, either alone or in combination with non-anemic iron deficiency, pointing to the necessity of further susceptibility factors

    Quantification of Dissolved and Particulate Polyunsaturated Aldehydes in the Adriatic Sea

    Polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUA) are supposed to play critical roles in chemically-mediated plankton interactions. Laboratory studies suggest that they act as mediators of chemical defense and chemical communication. PUA are oxylipins containing an α,β,γ,δ–unsaturated aldehyde structure element and are mainly found in diatoms. We present here a detailed surface mapping of PUA during a spring bloom of the diatom Skeletonema marinoi in the Adriatic Sea. We monitored dissolved PUA, as well as particulate PUA, which are produced by phytoplankton after cell disintegration. Our survey revealed a patchy distribution of PUA and shows that at most stations S. marinoi is the major contributor to the overall PUA. Our data also suggest that lysis of a diatom bloom can contribute significantly to the dissolved PUA concentrations and that other producers, which are smaller in cell size compared to diatoms, have to be taken into account as well if the total PUA content of marine samples is considered. The analyses of samples collected in deeper water suggests that diatom contribution to PUA decreases with depth, while smaller-sized unidentified organisms take place as dominant contributors to the PUA concentrations

    Dinoflagellate resting cysts from surface sediments of the Adriatic Ports: distribution and potential spreading patterns

    The ability of microalgae to preserve viable in coastal sediments as resting forms provides a reservoir of biodiversity and a useful tool to determine species spreadings. This study represents the first port baseline survey on dinoflagellate cysts, investigated in nine Adriatic ports during a cross border project. 40 dinoflagellate taxa were detected. The assemblages resulted in all ports dominated by Lingulodinium polyedra and Alexandrium minutum/affine/tamutum group. General separation to the western and eastern side of the Adriatic regarding cysts assemblage composition, partially abundance, was observed. Seven taxa were detected as non-indigenous species for the Adriatic. Two taxa are included in the list of harmful aquatic organisms, indicating the potential threat of ballast waters in the Adriatic. Potential spreading of taxa by general circulation and ballast waters, intra- and extra-Adriatic was investigated. The entering in to force of the ballast waters management regulations should enhance prospects to minimize future harmful impacts
