    Increasing the bandwidth of resonant gravitational antennas: The case of Explorer

    Resonant gravitational wave detectors with an observation bandwidth of tens of hertz are a reality: the antenna Explorer, operated at CERN by the ROG collaboration, has been upgraded with a new read-out. In this new configuration, it exhibits an unprecedented useful bandwidth: in over 55 Hz about its frequency of operation of 919 Hz the spectral sensitivity is better than 10^{-20} /sqrt(Hz) .     Dark Matter searches using gravitational wave bar detectors: quark nuggets and newtorites

    Many experiments have searched for supersymmetric WIMP dark matter, with null results. This may suggest to look for more exotic possibilities, for example compact ultra-dense quark nuggets, widely discussed in literature with several different names. Nuclearites are an example of candidate compact objects with atomic size cross section. After a short discussion on nuclearites, the result of a nuclearite search with the gravitational wave bar detectors Nautilus and Explorer is reported. The geometrical acceptance of the bar detectors is 19.5 m2\rm m^2 sr, that is smaller than that of other detectors used for similar searches. However, the detection mechanism is completely different and is more straightforward than in other detectors. The experimental limits we obtain are of interest because, for nuclearites of mass less than 10−510^{-5} g, we find a flux smaller than that one predicted considering nuclearites as dark matter candidates. Particles with gravitational only interactions (newtorites) are another example.     Quark nuggets search using 2350 Kg gravitational waves aluminum bar detectors

    The gravitational wave resonant detectors can be used as detectors of quark nuggets, like nuclearites (nuclear matter with a strange quark). This search has been carried out using data from two 2350 Kg, 2 K cooled, aluminum bar detectors: NAUTILUS, located in Frascati (Italy), and EXPLORER, that was located in CERN Geneva (CH). Both antennas are equipped with cosmic ray shower detectors: signals in the bar due to showers are continuously detected and used to characterize the antenna performances. The bar excitation mechanism is based on the so called thermo-acoustic effect, studied on dedicated experiments that use particle beams. This mechanism predicts that vibrations of bars are induced by the heat deposited in the bar from the particle. The geometrical acceptance of the bar detectors is 19.5 m2\rm m^2 sr, that is smaller than that of other detectors used for similar searches. However, the detection mechanism is completely different and is more straightforward than in other detectors. We will show the results of ten years of data from NAUTILUS (2003-2012) and 7 years from EXPLORER (2003-2009).     Analysis of 3 years of data from the gravitational wave detectors EXPLORER and NAUTILUS

    We performed a search for short gravitational wave bursts using about 3 years of data of the resonant bar detectors Nautilus and Explorer. Two types of analysis were performed: a search for coincidences with a low background of accidentals (0.1 over the entire period), and the calculation of upper limits on the rate of gravitational wave bursts. Here we give a detailed account of the methodology and we report the results: a null search for coincident events and an upper limit that improves over all previous limits from resonant antennas, and is competitive, in the range h_rss ~1E-19, with limits from interferometric detectors. Some new methodological features are introduced that have proven successful in the upper limits evaluation.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figure

    Photoelectrochemical Valorization of Biomass Derivatives with Hematite Photoanodes Modified by Cocatalysts

    The solar-driven oxidation of biomass to valuable chemicals is rising as a promising anodic reaction in photoelectrochemical cells, replacing the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction and improving the added value of the energy conversion process. Herein, the photooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural into furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is performed in basic aqueous environment (borate buffer, pH 9.2), with the addition of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) as redox mediator. Because of its good stability, cost-effectiveness, and nontoxicity, titanium-modified hematite (Ti:Fe2O3) photoanodes are investigated to this aim, and their performance is tuned by engineering the semiconductor surface with a thin layer of Co-based cocatalysts, i.e., cobalt iron oxide (CoFeO x ) and cobalt phosphate (CoPi). Interestingly, the electrode modified with CoPi shows improved efficiency and selectivity toward the final product FDCA The source of this enhancement is correlated to the effect of the cocatalyst on the charge carrier dynamics, which is investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy analysis. In addition, the results of the latter are interpreted through a novel approach called Lasso distribution of relaxation time, revealing that CoPi cocatalyst is effective in the suppression of the recombination processes and in the enhancement of direct hole transfer to TEMPO

    Reversing conditional orderings

    We analyze some specific aspects concerning conditional orderings and relations among them. To this purpose we define a suitable concept of reversed conditional ordering and prove some related results. In particular we aim to compare the univariate stochastic orderings ≤ st, ≤ hr, and ≤ lr in terms of differences among different notions of conditional orderings. Some applications of our result to the analysis of positive dependence will be detailed. We concentrate attention to the case of a pair of scalar random variables X, Y ​. Suitable extensions to multivariate cases are possible

    Characteristics of the students of the faculties of Veterinary of Campo Grande (Brazil) and Casilda (Argentina)

    El Mercosur hará necesario que se establezcan mecanismos de acreditación de las Facultades y de certificación de los profesionales, ello implica realizar evaluaciones de las Instituciones. En relación a la evaluación interna, se remarca la importancia de reconocer las características cuanti y cualitativas de los alumnos. Realizamos el estudio comparativo de características educacionales, socio-económicas y culturales así como expectativas e intereses de los alumnos de las Facultades de Veterinaria de Campo Grande y de Casilda. El 46% de los alumnos de Campo Grande y el 68% de Casilda piensan por primera vez en estudiar veterinaria antes de los 15 años. En ambos paises el 90% piensa en veterinaria antes de los 17 años y el 70% consideró la posibilidad de estudiar otras carreras antes de definirse. Las razones para la elección 500: afición por los animales afición por el campo e interés por la biología; los alumnos son influenciados a estudiar veterinaria por veterinarios. La determinación de ingresar es una decisión personal en prácticamente todos los estudiantes; los alumnos piensan especializarse y el 60% tiene definida una especialidad. Las similitudes encontradas resultan interesantes y facilitadoras para la homologación de programas académicos y la calidad de los veterinarios que se formen en ambas instituciones con vista al libre ejercicio dentro del MERCOSUR.The MERCOSUR will lead to the necessity of stablishing accreditation mechanisms for the Veterinary Faculties and certifications for professionals which will imply the evaluation of Institutions. With regard to internal evaluation, knowledge of both the quantity and quality of the students comes relevant A comparative study of dedicational, socioeconomic and cultural, as well as expectation and interest of students of Veterinary Science at me Faculties of Campo Grande and Casilda was carried out.     Characterization of faecal sludge during dry and rainy seasons in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

    Faecal sludge (FS) management is a challenging problem in low-income countries where large parts of the urban population rely on onsite sanitation systems. The design of treatment plants relies on accurate knowledge of FS characteristics, but this information is lacking. The goal of this study, conducted between December 2010 and September 2011, was to determine physical and chemical characteristics of raw FS from collection and transport trucks in 5 discharge sites in Ouagadougou. Over 100 samples directly collected during truck discharge were analysed. Analyses included suspended solids, volatile suspended solids, total solids, total volatile solids, sludge volume index, chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, and heavy metals. The FS characteristics were highly variable, but had similar characteristics for FS collected during the dry and rainy seasons and at different discharge sites. The type of onsite system had an influence on FS characteristics

    Effect of cosmic rays on the resonant gravitational wave detector NAUTILUS at temperature T=1.5 K

    The interaction between cosmic rays and the gravitational wave bar detector NAUTILUS is experimentally studied with the aluminum bar at temperature of T=1.5 K. The results are compared with those obtained in the previous runs when the bar was at T=0.14 K. The results of the run at T = 1.5 K are in agreement with the thermo-acoustic model; no large signals at unexpected rate are noticed, unlike the data taken in the run at T = 0.14 K. The observations suggest a larger efficiency in the mechanism of conversion of the particle energy into vibrational mode energy when the aluminum bar is in the superconductive status.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables.     Does Bentonite Cause Cytotoxic and Whole-Transcriptomic Adverse Effects in Enterocytes When Used to Reduce Aflatoxin B1 Exposure?

    Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a major food safety concern, threatening the health of humans and animals. Bentonite (BEN) is an aluminosilicate clay used as a feed additive to reduce AFB1 presence in contaminated feedstuff. So far, few studies have characterized BEN toxicity and efficacy in vitro. In this study, cytotoxicity (WST-1 test), the effects on cell permeability (trans-epithelial electrical resistance and lucifer yellow dye incorporation), and transcriptional changes (RNA-seq) caused by BEN, AFB1 and their combination (AFB1 + BEN) were investigated in Caco-2 cells. Up to 0.1 mg/mL, BEN did not affect cell viability and permeability, but it reduced AFB1 cytotoxicity; however, at higher concentrations, BEN was cytotoxic. As to RNA-seq, 0.1 mg/mL BEN did not show effects on cell transcriptome, confirming that the interaction between BEN and AFB1 occurs in the medium. Data from AFB1 and AFB1 + BEN suggested AFB1 provoked most of the transcriptional changes, whereas BEN was preventive. The most interesting AFB1-targeted pathways for which BEN was effective were cell integrity, xenobiotic metabolism and transporters, basal metabolism, inflammation and immune response, p53 biological network, apoptosis and carcinogenesis. To our knowledge, this is the first study assessing the in vitro toxicity and whole-transcriptomic effects of BEN, alone or in the presence of AFB1
