This paper uses aggregate-level data, as well as case-studies, to trace the evolution of some key structural features of the Indian economy, relating both to the agricultural and the informal industrial sector. These aggregate trends are used to infer: (a) the dominant relations of production under which the vast majority of the Indian working people labour, and (b) the predominant ways in which the surplus labour of the direct producers is appropriated by the dominant classes. This summary account is meant to inform and link up with on-going attempts at radically restructuring Indian society. JEL Categories: B24, B51

Segue: Overviewing Evolution Patterns of Egocentric Networks by Interactive Construction of Spatial Layouts
Getting the overall picture of how a large number of ego-networks evolve is a
common yet challenging task. Existing techniques often require analysts to
inspect the evolution patterns of ego-networks one after another. In this
study, we explore an approach that allows analysts to interactively create
spatial layouts in which each dot is a dynamic ego-network. These spatial
layouts provide overviews of the evolution patterns of ego-networks, thereby
revealing different global patterns such as trends, clusters and outliers in
evolution patterns. To let analysts interactively construct interpretable
spatial layouts, we propose a data transformation pipeline, with which analysts
can adjust the spatial layouts and convert dynamic egonetworks into event
sequences to aid interpretations of the spatial positions. Based on this
transformation pipeline, we developed Segue, a visual analysis system that
supports thorough exploration of the evolution patterns of ego-networks.
Through two usage scenarios, we demonstrate how analysts can gain insights into
the overall evolution patterns of a large collection of ego-networks by

Visual analytics for supply network management: system design and evaluation
We propose a visual analytic system to augment and enhance decision-making processes of supply chain managers. Several design requirements drive the development of our integrated architecture and lead to three primary capabilities of our system prototype. First, a visual analytic system must integrate various relevant views and perspectives that highlight different structural aspects of a supply network. Second, the system must deliver required information on-demand and update the visual representation via user-initiated interactions. Third, the system must provide both descriptive and predictive analytic functions for managers to gain contingency intelligence. Based on these capabilities we implement an interactive web-based visual analytic system. Our system enables managers to interactively apply visual encodings based on different node and edge attributes to facilitate mental map matching between abstract attributes and visual elements. Grounded in cognitive fit theory, we demonstrate that an interactive visual system that dynamically adjusts visual representations to the decision environment can significantly enhance decision-making processes in a supply network setting. We conduct multi-stage evaluation sessions with prototypical users that collectively confirm the value of our system. Our results indicate a positive reaction to our system. Determinants and Impact of Subcontracting: Evidence from Indias Informal Manufacturing Sector
There are two divergent perspectives on the impact of subcontracting on firms in the informal sector. According to the benign view, formal sector firms prefer linkages with relatively modern firms in the informal sector, and subcontracting enables capital accumulation and technological improvement in the latter. According to the exploitation view, formal sector firms extract surplus from stagnant, asset-poor informal sector firms that use cheap family labour in home-based production. However, direct, firm-level evidence on the determinants and impact of subcontracting is thus far lacking in the literature. We apply a modified Heckman selection model to Indian National Sample Survey data on informal manufacturing enterprises (2005-06). We find that home-based, relatively asset-poor, and female-owned firms are more likely to be in a subcontracting relationship. Further, we perform selectivity-corrected Oaxaca-Blinder Decomposition and calculate treatment effects to show that subcontracting benefits smaller firms, firms in industrially backward states and rural firms; it is harmful for larger firms, firms in industrially advanced states, and urban firms. Our results suggest that the effects of subcontracting are more complex than those predicted by the divergent perspectives. Policy-makers need to engage with this complexity
Crafting a Systematic Literature Review on Open-Source Platforms
This working paper unveils the crafting of a systematic literature review on
open-source platforms. The high-competitive mobile devices market, where
several players such as Apple, Google, Nokia and Microsoft run a platforms- war
with constant shifts in their technological strategies, is gaining increasing
attention from scholars. It matters, then, to review previous literature on
past platforms-wars, such as the ones from the PC and game-console industries,
and assess its implications to the current mobile devices platforms-war. The
paper starts by justifying the purpose and rationale behind this literature
review on open-source platforms. The concepts of open-source software and
computer-based platforms were then discussed both individually and in unison,
in order to clarify the core-concept of 'open-source platform' that guides this
literature review. The detailed design of the employed methodological strategy
is then presented as the central part of this paper. The paper concludes with
preliminary findings organizing previous literature on open-source platforms

PDE8 controls CD4(+) T cell motility through the PDE8A-Raf-1 kinase signaling complex
The levels of cAMP are regulated by phosphodiesterase enzymes (PDEs), which are targets for the treatment of inflammatory disorders. We have previously shown that PDE8 regulates T cell motility. Here, for the first time, we report that PDE8A exerts part of its control of T cell function through the V-raf-1 murine leukemia viral oncogene homolog 1 (Raf-1) kinase signaling pathway. To examine T cell motility under physiologic conditions, we analyzed T cell interactions with endothelial cells and ligands in flow assays. The highly PDE8-selective enzymatic inhibitor PF-04957325 suppresses adhesion of in vivo myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) activated inflammatory CD4(+) T effector (Teff) cells to brain endothelial cells under shear stress. Recently, PDE8A was shown to associate with Raf-1 creating a compartment of low cAMP levels around Raf-1 thereby protecting it from protein kinase A (PKA) mediated inhibitory phosphorylation. To test the function of this complex in Teff cells, we used a cell permeable peptide that selectively disrupts the PDE8A-Raf-1 interaction. The disruptor peptide inhibits the Teff-endothelial cell interaction more potently than the enzymatic inhibitor. Furthermore, the LFA-1/ICAM-1 interaction was identified as a target of disruptor peptide mediated reduction of adhesion, spreading and locomotion of Teff cells under flow. Mechanistically, we observed that disruption of the PDE8A-Raf-1 complex profoundly alters Raf-1 signaling in Teff cells. Collectively, our studies demonstrate that PDE8A inhibition by enzymatic inhibitors or PDE8A-Raf-1 kinase complex disruptors decreases Teff cell adhesion and migration under flow, and represents a novel approach to target T cells in inflammation
Understanding Ecosystem Data
There is a growing body of empirical studies on business ecosystems. Driven by different questions these studies typically employ a wide variety of data sources – ranging from open to proprietary, structured to unstructured – that contain a broad range of entities, relationships, activities, and issues of interest. Individually, these data sources offer the ability to investigate very targeted business ecosystem questions. However, when linked and combined these data sources can potentially open up many new lines of inquiry. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the scope and complexity of the business ecosystem data landscape, discuss what type(s) of information is captured in them, identify how data sources overlap and differ, discuss strengths and weaknesses, and suggest new types of analyses that could be generated when combined. In doing so this study aims to help researchers and practitioners with the data identification and selection process and stimulate novel data-driven ecosystem intelligence.
