    Prevalence and association of obesity with self-reported comorbidity: a cross-sectional study of 1321 adult participants in Lasbela, Balochistan

    Association of fatness with chronic metabolic diseases is a well-established fact, and a high prevalence of risk factors for these disorders has increasingly been reported in the third world. In order to incorporate any preventive strategies for such risk factors into clinical practice, decision-makers require objective evidence about the associated burden of disease. A cross-sectional study of 1321 adults from one of the districts of Balochistan, among the most economically challenged areas of Pakistan, was carried out for the measures of fatness and self-reported comorbidities. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were measured and demographic information and self-reported comorbidities were documented.The prevalence of obesity was 4.8% (95% CI: [3.8, 6.1]) and 21.7% (95% CI: [19.5, 24.0]), as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) international and Asia/Asia-Pacific BMI cut-offs, respectively. The proportion exhibiting comorbidity increased with increasing levels of fatness in a dose-response relationship

    Crowdsourcing Linked Data on listening experiences through reuse and enhancement of library data

    Research has approached the practice of musical reception in a multitude of ways, such as the analysis of professional critique, sales figures and psychological processes activated by the act of listening. Studies in the Humanities, on the other hand, have been hindered by the lack of structured evidence of actual experiences of listening as reported by the listeners themselves, a concern that was voiced since the early Web era. It was however assumed that such evidence existed, albeit in pure textual form, but could not be leveraged until it was digitised and aggregated. The Listening Experience Database (LED) responds to this research need by providing a centralised hub for evidence of listening in the literature. Not only does LED support search and reuse across nearly 10,000 records, but it also provides machine-readable structured data of the knowledge around the contexts of listening. To take advantage of the mass of formal knowledge that already exists on the Web concerning these contexts, the entire framework adopts Linked Data principles and technologies. This also allows LED to directly reuse open data from the British Library for the source documentation that is already published. Reused data are re-published as open data with enhancements obtained by expanding over the model of the original data, such as the partitioning of published books and collections into individual stand-alone documents. The database was populated through crowdsourcing and seamlessly incorporates data reuse from the very early data entry phases. As the sources of the evidence often contain vague, fragmentary of uncertain information, facilities were put in place to generate structured data out of such fuzziness. Alongside elaborating on these functionalities, this article provides insights into the most recent features of the latest instalment of the dataset and portal, such as the interlinking with the MusicBrainz database, the relaxation of geographical input constraints through text mining, and the plotting of key locations in an interactive geographical browser

    The association of chest radiographic findings and severity scoring with clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19 presenting to the emergency department of a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan

    Introduction: While chest x-rays (CXRs) represent a cost-effective imaging modality for developing countries like Pakistan, their utility for the prognostication of COVID-19 has been minimally explored. Thus, we describe the frequency and distribution of CXR findings, and their association with clinical outcomes of patients with COVID-19.Methods: All adult (≥ 18 years) patients presenting between 28th February-31st May to the emergency department of a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan, who were COVID-19 positive on RT-PCR with CXR done on presentation, were included. A CXR Severity Score (CXR-SS) of 0-8 was used to quantify the extent of pulmonary infection on CXR, with a score of 0 being negative and 1-8 being positive. The patients\u27 initial CXR-SS and their highest CXR-SS over the hospital course were used for analysis, with cut-offs of 0-4 and 5-8 being used to assess association with clinical outcomes.Results: A total of 150 patients, with 76.7% males and mean age 56.1 years, were included in this study. Initial CXR was positive in 80% of patients, and 30.7% of patients had an initial CXR-SS between 5-8. The mortality rate was 16.7% and 30.6% patients underwent ICU admission with intubation (ICU-Int). On multivariable analysis, initial CXR-SS (1.355 [1.136-1.616]) and highest CXR-SS (1.390 [1.143-1.690]) were predictors of ICU-Int, and ICU-Int was independently associated with both initial CXR-SS 5-8 (2.532 [1.109-5.782]) and highest CXR-SS 5-8 (3.386 [1.405-8.159]). Lastly, age (1.060 [1.009-1.113]), initial CXR-SS (1.278 [1.010-1.617]) and ICU-Int (5.047 [1.731-14.710]), were found to be independent predictors of mortality in our patients.Conclusion: In a resource-constrained country like Pakistan, CXRs may have valuable prognostic utility in predicting ICU admission and mortality. Additional research with larger patient samples is needed to further explore the association of CXR findings with clinical outcomes

    Suitability of various plant derived gelling agents as agar substitute in microbiological growth media

    Eleven putative gelling agents were investigated as agar substitutes. These included arrowroot (Maranta arundinaceae), coconut powder (Cocos nucifera), corn flour (Zea mays var. amylacea), gel rite (a water-soluble polysaccharide produced by Sphingomonas elodea), glue (Cyanoacrylates), katira gum (Cochlospermum religiosum), guar gum (Cyamopsis tetragonolobus L.), isubgol husk (Plantago ovata), pectin and rice (Oryza sativa L.) powder. Among these, guar gum was found a promising alternate candidate for agar. Media solidified with 2.8% guar gum was transparent and supportive for the growth of three test fungi (Trichoderma harzianum, Alternaria alternata and Alternaria solani) as good as agar. Guar gum also excelled in terms of cost benefit ratio when compared with agar. Guar gum fortified media was found to cost 0.005/Lascomparedtoagarsupplementedmediacosting 0.005/L as compared to agar supplemented media costing 1.17/L. Further, guar gum is easily available and can be added with ease thereby serving as a suitable and inexpensive substitute of agar and thus, can be adopted for routine microbiological testing in resource poor countries.Key words: Guar gum, media, agar, gelling agents

    Effect of polyglucosamine on weight loss and metabolic parameters in overweight and obesity: A systemic review and meta-analysis

    The use of dietary supplements for weight loss has gained significant momentum. Polyglucosamine, a chitosan derivative, is a dietary supplement increasingly used for weight loss. In this meta-analysis, we systematically summarized and quantified the key findings of four randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials examining the effects of polyglucosamine supplementation and caloric restriction, and physical activity on body weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference in subjects with overweight and obesity. The control group was set with a physical activity from 6–7 MET-h/week activity and up to 21 MET-h/week activity with caloric restriction. Compliance in the latter trials was reported via a follow-up questionnaire with the individual participants. The analysis included 399 subjects followed for a period ranging from 12 weeks to one year. Subjects’ age ranged from 21–75 years, BMI from 26–45 kg/m2, and all were white European or Caucasian in ethnicity. The meta-analyzed mean differences for random effects showed that polyglucosamine supplementation improves weight loss by −1.78 kg [−2.78, −0.79], BMI by −1.52 kg/m2 [−3.58, 0.54], and improves waist circumference reduction by −1.45 cm [−2.77, −0.12]. In conclusion, the use of polyglucosamine supplementation in conjunction with lifestyle behavioral therapies can be effective for weight reduction. Further studies are needed to examine the long-term effects of polyglucosamine supplementation on weight loss and other metabolic parameters

    Resveratrol supplementation and acute pancreatitis: A comprehensive review

    Resveratrol, a natural polyphenolic ingredient extracted from herbs, suppresses oxidative stress and inflammation. We performed a comprehensive review to find any evidence about the effects of Resveratrol on acute pancreatitis (AP). Resveratrol has been found to directly impact cytokine generation. As these factors play a crucial role in the pathophysiology of AP, resveratrol might attenuate AP and its complications. Mechanistically, resveratrol exerts its pharmacological effects through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant mechanisms via interaction with different signaling molecules and transcription factors. Indeed, resveratrol might prove to be an effective therapeutic component for AP treatment in the future. In this review, we shed light on potential most recent pathways through which resveratrol might impact the management and control of AP. © 202

    Effect of Organic Fertilizer on the Growth of Tea ((Camellia sinensis L.)

    This study was conducted at National Tea and High value crops Research Institute, Shinkiari, Mansehra during 2014- 2015. The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the response of different doses of organic fertilizers to the growth of newly planted tea (Camellia sinensis L., variety, Turkish). Different doses of Hyosung applied as kg/acre were T0= Control, T1 = (400), T2 = (500), T3 = (600), T4 = (700) and T5 = (800). The data recorded during growth season during 2014 and 2015. Highest plant height (50 & 52 cm), Number of leaves per plant (39.67, 17.75) and Number of branches/plant (7.67, 6.29) were recorded in T4 respectively followed by T5 while maximum leaf area was recorded in T4 (48 cm2) during 2014 and T3 (47.87cm2) during 2015 respectively. Soil samples were collected at 0-20 cm and 21-40 cm depth and analyzed for physico-chemical characteristics. It is revealed that soil was sandy loam in texture with soil pH 6.25 and 2.90% organic matter and was supportive for the good growth of tea crop. A gradual increase in the organic matter content was observed with the increase of fertilizer dose. Soil pH was slightly decreased by the application of organic fertilizer which is a good sign to increase the growth of tea crop

    Groundwater resources in the Indo-Gangetic Basin : resilience to climate change and abstraction

    Groundwater within the Indo‐Gangetic Basin (IGB) alluvial aquifer system forms one of the world’s most important and heavily exploited reservoirs of freshwater. In this study we have examined the groundwater system through the lens of its resilience to change – both from the impact of climate change and increases in abstraction. This has led to the development of a series of new maps for the IGB aquifer, building on existing datasets held in Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh, a review of approximately 500 reports and papers, and three targeted field studies on under‐researched topics within the region. The major findings of the study are described below. The IGB groundwater system 1. The IGB alluvial aquifer system comprises a large volume of heterogeneous unconsolidated sediment in a complex environmental setting. Annual rainfall varies from 2000mm in the Bengal basin, and the system is dissected by the major river systems of the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra. The groundwater system has been modified by the introduction of large scale canal irrigation schemes using water from the Indus and Ganges since the 19th and early 20th centuries. 2. High yielding tubewells can be sustained in most parts of the alluvial aquifer system; permeability is often in the range of 10 – 60 m/d and specific yield (the drainable porosity) varies from 5 – 20%, making it highly productive. 3. High salinity and elevated arsenic concentrations exist in parts of the basin limiting the usefulness of the groundwater resource. Saline water predominates in the Lower Indus, and near to the coast in the Bengal Delta, and is also a major concern in the Middle Ganges and Upper Ganges (covering much of the Punjab Region in Pakistan, southern Punjab, Haryana and parts of Uttar Pradesh in India). Arsenic severely impacts the development of shallow groundwater in the fluvial influenced deltaic area of the Bengal Basin. 4. Recharge to the IGB aquifer system is substantial and dynamic, controlled by monsoonal rainfall, leakage from canals, river infiltration and irrigation returns. Recharge from rainfall can occur even with low annual rainfall (350 mm) and appears to dominate where rainfall is higher (> 750 mm). Canal leakage is also highly significant and constitutes the largest proportion of groundwater recharge in the drier parts of the aquifer, partially mitigating the effects of abstraction on groundwater storage. 5. Deep groundwater (>150 m) in the Bengal basin has strategic value for water supply, health and economic development. Excessive abstraction poses a greater threat to the quality of this deep groundwater than climate change. Heavy pumping may induce the downward migration of arsenic in parts of Bangladesh, and of saline water in coastal regions, but field evidence and modelling both suggest that deep groundwater abstraction for public water supply in southern Bangladesh is in general secure against widespread ingress of arsenic and saline water for at least 100 years
