Universal Properties of Linear Magnetoresistance in Strongly Disordered Semiconductors
Linear magnetoresistance occurs in semiconductors as a consequence of strong
electrical disorder and is characterized by nonsaturating magnetoresistance
that is proportional to the applied magnetic field. By investigating a
disordered MnAs-GaAs composite material, it is found that the magnitude of the
linear magnetoresistance (LMR) is numerically equal to the carrier mobility
over a wide range and is independent of carrier density. This behavior is
complementary to the Hall effect that is independent of the mobility and
dependent on the carrier density. Moreover, the LMR appears to be insensitive
to the details of the disorder and points to a universal explanation of

Inflammasome expression is higher in ovarian tumors than in normal ovary

A mechanism of chronic inflammation is the formation of inflammasome complexes which results in the sustained secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL1β and IL18. Inflammasome expression and actions vary among cancers. There is no information on inflammasome expression in ovarian cancer (OvCa). To determine if ovarian tumors express inflammasome components, mRNA and protein expression of NLRP3 (nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich repeat family, pyrin domain containing 3), caspase-1, IL1β, and IL18 expression in hen and human OvCa was assessed. Chicken (hen) OvCa a valid model of spontaneous human OvCa. Hens were selected into study groups with or without tumors using ultrasonography; tumors were confirmed by histology, increased cellular proliferation, and expression of immune cell marker mRNA. mRNA expression was higher for hallmarks of inflammasome activity (caspase-1, 5.9x increase, p = 0.04; IL1β, 4x increase, p = 0.04; and IL18, 7.8x increase, p = 0.0003) in hen OvCa compared to normal ovary. NLRP3, caspase-8 and caspase-11 mRNA did not differ significantly between tumor and non-tumor containing ovaries. Similar results occurred for human OvCa. Protein expression by immunohistochemistry paralleled mRNA expression and was qualitatively higher in tumors. Increased protein expression of caspase-1, IL1β, and IL18 occurred in surface epithelium, tumor cells, and immune cells. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), a potential tumor suppressor and NLRP3 regulator, was higher in hen (2.4x increase, p = 0.002) and human tumors (1.8x increase, p = 0.038), suggesting a role in OvCa. Dry-forest tree species with large seeds and low stem specific density show greater survival under drought
Tree establishment in tropical dry forests is constrained by drought-related seedling mortality during early stages of recruitment. Predicted increases in the duration of growing-season droughts in the future pose a significant threat to these ecosystems that could significantly alter their vegetation structure and composition. Here, we examined drought tolerance in seedlings of seven common dry-forest tree species from the Indian subcontinent. We conducted a dry-down experiment on 3-wk-old seedlings, and asked whether the key plant functional traits, specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), seed size and stem specific density (SSD) were good predictors of seedling growth under well-watered conditions, and survival during drought. Seedlings displayed substantial drought tolerance with most seedlings surviving for more than 2 wk under protracted drought. Seed size in combination with SLA predicted seedling growth under well-watered conditions and seed size predicted survival under drought. In contrast to our expectations, seedlings with lower SSD survived for longer without water. Our results suggest that dry-forest species will be differentially affected by the predicted increases in the duration of growing-season droughts, and detrimental effects will be more severe for species with smaller seeds
Cardiovascular disease risk factors among school children of Bangladesh: A cross-sectional study
Objective: Primarily, we assessed the distribution of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors among school children living in urban and rural areas of Bangladesh. In addition to this, we sought the association between place of residence and modifiable CVD risk factors among them. Design, setting and participants: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 854 school children (aged 12–18 years) of Bangladesh. Ten public high schools (five from Dhaka and five from Sirajgonj district) were selected randomly and subjects from those were recruited conveniently. To link the family milieu of CVD risk factors, a parent of each children was also interviewed. Primary and secondary outcome measures: Distribution of CVD risk factors was measured using descriptive statistics as appropriate. Again, a saturated model of binary logistic regression was used to seek the association between place of residence and modifiable CVD risk factors. Results: Mean age of the school children was 14.6±1.1 years and more than half (57.6%) were boys. Overall, 4.4% were currently smoker (urban—3.5%, rural—5.2%) with a strong family history of smoking (42.2%). Similar proportion of school children were identified as overweight (total 9.8%, urban 14.7%, rural 5%) and obese (total 9.8%, urban 16.8%, rural 2.8%) with notable urban-rural difference. More than three-fourth (80%) of them were physically inactive with no urban-rural variation. Only 2.4% consumed recommended fruits and/ or vegetables (urban—3.1%, rural—1.7%). In the adjusted model, place of residence had higher odds for having several modifiable CVD risk factors: current smoking (OR: 1.807, CI 0.872 to 3.744), inadequate fruits and vegetables intake (OR: 1.094, CI 0.631 to 1.895), physical inactivity (OR: 1.082, CI 0.751 to 1.558), overweight (OR: 3.812, CI 2.245 to 6.470) and obesity (OR: 7.449, CI 3.947 to 14.057). Conclusions: Both urban and rural school children of Bangladesh had poor CVD risk factors profile that demands further nation-wide large scale study to clarify the current findings more precisely.</jats:sec
The hen model of human ovarian cancer develops anti-mesothelin autoantibodies in response to mesothelin expressing tumors
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>Study of the hen immune system led to seminal contributions to basic immunological principles. Recent studies of spontaneous ovarian cancer in the laying hen show strikingly similar tumor types and antigen expression compared to human ovarian cancer, suggesting hens would be valuable for studies of tumor immunology and pre-clinical vaccine development. Circulating mesothelin is a relatively specific marker for human ovarian cancer and autoantibodies to mesothelin were reported. We hypothesized that hen tumors express mesothelin and that circulating anti-mesothelin antibodies occur in response to tumors.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Mesothelin mRNA expression was analyzed by RT-PCR in hen ovarian tumors and normal ovaries. Mesothelin protein expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and two-dimensional SDS-PAGE Western blots. Anti-mesothelin antibodies were assessed by immunoassay of sera from hens with normal ovaries and with ovarian tumors.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Significant mesothelin mRNA expression was observed in 57% (12/21) of hen ovarian tumors but not in normal ovaries and was found predominantly in serous tumors as in humans. Mesothelin protein was detected in tumors with mesothelin mRNA by IHC and 2D Western blots, but not in normal ovaries or tumors without mesothelin mRNA. Circulating anti-mesothelin antibodies occurred in 44% (n = 4/9) of hens with ovarian tumors which express mesothelin mRNA and were not found in hens with tumors that did not express mesothelin (n = 0/5) or normal ovaries (n = 0/5).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results support the utility of the hen as a novel model for preclinical studies of mesothelin as a biomarker and a target for immunotherapy.</p
Proximity-induced ferromagnetism and chemical reactivity in few-layer VSe2 heterostructures
Among transition-metal dichalcogenides, mono and few-layers thick VSe2 has gained much recent attention following claims of intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in this system, which have nonetheless proved controversial. Here, we address the magnetic and chemical properties of Fe/VSe2 heterostructure by combining element sensitive x-ray absorption spectroscopy and photoemission spectroscopy. Our x-ray magnetic circular dichroism results confirm recent findings that both native mono/few-layer and bulk VSe2 do not show intrinsic ferromagnetic ordering. Nonetheless, we find that ferromagnetism can be induced, even at room temperature, after coupling with a Fe thin film layer, with antiparallel alignment of the moment on the V with respect to Fe. We further consider the chemical reactivity at the Fe/VSe2 interface and its relation with interfacial magnetic coupling
Lattice-driven magnetic transitions in Al(Fe,T)2X2 compounds
Systematic trends connect detailed composition, lattice parameters and magnetic transition temperatures in the ferromagnetic intermetallic compound AlT2X2 with the Mn2AlB2-type crystal structure, where T = Mn, Fe, Ni, Co and X = B, C. Data were derived from both literature reports and from experiments performed on synthesized samples (T = (Fe1−xNix)2, x = 0, 0.05, 0.1; X = (B0.9C0.1)2). It is observed that compositional variation alters specific bonds responsible for the magnetic phase transition response, which ranges from 200 K ≤ Tt ≤ 310 K. Elemental composition that provides changes in the c-axis length and the associated (T-T)c-axis interatomic distance contribute the largest bonding effects to magnetic phase transition temperature Tt, alterations. Overall, these results are attributed to the dependence of Tt on the specifics of the Fe sublattice occupancy, electronic state and T-T bonding. In contrast, Tt is found to be largely independent of the (b/a) axial ratios and the associated (T-X)b-axis/(T-X)(ac)-plane interatomic distance ratios, indicating that interatomic interactions along the a-axis have little effect on the Tt

Astrophysical S_{17}(0) factor from a measurement of d(7Be,8B)n reaction at E_{c.m.} = 4.5 MeV
Angular distribution measurements of H(Be,Be)H and
H(Be,B) reactions at ~4.5 MeV were performed to
extract the astrophysical factor using the asymptotic normalization
coefficient (ANC) method. For this purpose a pure, low emittance Be beam
was separated from the primary Li beam by a recoil mass spectrometer
operated in a novel mode. A beam stopper at 0 allowed the use of a
higher Be beam intensity. Measurement of the elastic scattering in the
entrance channel using kinematic coincidence, facilitated the determination of
the optical model parameters needed for the analysis of the transfer data. The
present measurement significantly reduces errors in the extracted
Be(p,) cross section using the ANC method. We get
