    Left main coronary artery originating from the right sinus of valsalva and coursing between the aorta and pulmonary trunk

    Findings are described in five patients who at necropsy were found to have origin of the left main coronary artery from the right sinus of Valsalva and coursing of the anomalously arising artery between aorta and pulmonary trunk to reach the left side of the heart. Three of the five patients were boys and died suddenly at ages 13, 14 and 19 years, respectively: two of them had had one or more episodes of syncope and the third had an abnormal electrocardiogram. The fourth patient, a 64 year old woman, died of chronic congestive heart failure 1 year after an acute myocardial infarction. She had insignificant coronary atherosclerosis. The fifth patient, an 81 year old man, died of chronic alcoholism, having been free of symptoms of cardiac dysfunction during life.Additionally, clinical and necropsy findings are summarized in 38 previously reported necropsy patients with the coronary anomaly. Of these 38 (34 male [89%]), 23 (61 %) died suddenly in the first two decades of life; death in 6 others (16%) appears to have been related to coronary atherosclerosis and 9 patients (24%) died from noncoronary causes. Thus, this anomaly is life-threatening. Why it frequently causes fatal cardiac arrest in some young individuals and allows a normal life span in others remains unclear

    Web-based visualization of gridded dataset usings OceanBrowser

    OceanBrowser is a web-based visualization tool for gridded oceanographic data sets. Those data sets are typically four-dimensional (longitude, latitude, depth and time). OceanBrowser allows one to visualize horizontal sections at a given depth and time to examine the horizontal distribution of a given variable. It also offers the possibility to display the results on an arbitrary vertical section. To study the evolution of the variable in time, the horizontal and vertical sections can also be animated. Vertical section can be generated by using a fixed distance from coast or fixed ocean depth. The user can customize the plot by changing the color-map, the range of the color-bar, the type of the plot (linearly interpolated color, simple contours, filled contours) and download the current view as a simple image or as Keyhole Markup Language (KML) file for visualization in applications such as Google Earth. The data products can also be accessed as NetCDF files and through OPeNDAP. Third-party layers from a web map service can also be integrated. OceanBrowser is used in the frame of the SeaDataNet project (http://gher-diva.phys.ulg.ac.be/web-vis/) and EMODNET Chemistry (http://oceanbrowser.net/emodnet/) to distribute gridded data sets interpolated from in situ observation using DIVA (Data-Interpolating Variational Analysis)

    Sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere of Venus 1 sounding rocket observations

    In this paper we present ultraviolet reflectance spectra obtained during two sounding rocket observations of Venus made during September 1988 and March 1991. We describe the sensitivity of the derived reflectance to instrument calibration and show that significant artifacts can appear in that spectrum as a result of using separate instruments to observe both the planetary radiance and the solar irradiance. We show that sulfur dioxide is the primary spectral absorber in the 190 - 230 nm region and that the range of altitudes probed by these wavelengths is very sensitive to incidence and emission angles. In a following paper Na et. al. (1994) show that sulfur monoxide features are also present in these data. Accurate identification and measurement of additional species require observations in which both the planetary radiance and the solar irradiance are measured with the same instrument. The instrument used for these observations is uniquely suited for obtaining large phase angle coverage and for studying transient atmospheric events on Venus because it can observe targets within 18 deg of the sun while earth orbiting instruments are restricted to solar elongation angles greater than or equal to 45 deg

    The Origin of the Intrinsic Scatter in the Relation Between Black Hole Mass and Bulge Luminosity for Nearby Active Galaxies

    We investigate the origin of the intrinsic scatter in the correlation between black hole mass (MBH) and bulge luminosity [L(bulge)] in a sample of 45 massive, local (z < 0.35) type~1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We derive MBH from published optical spectra assuming a spherical broad-line region, and L(bulge) from detailed two-dimensional decomposition of archival optical Hubble Space Telescope images. AGNs follow the MBH-L(bulge) relation of inactive galaxies, but the zero point is shifted by an average of \Delta log MBH ~ -0.3 dex. We show that the magnitude of the zero point offset, which is responsible for the intrinsic scatter in the MBH-L(bulge) relation, is correlated with several AGN and host galaxy properties, all of which are ultimately related to, or directly impact, the BH mass accretion rate. At a given bulge luminosity, sources with higher Eddington ratios have lower MBH. The zero point offset can be explained by a change in the normalization of the virial product used to estimate MBH, in conjunction with modest BH growth (~ 10%--40%) during the AGN phase.
