Bayesian Model Comparison and Analysis of the Galactic Disk Population of Gamma-Ray Millisecond Pulsars
Pulsed emission from almost one hundred millisecond pulsars (MSPs) has been
detected in -rays by the Fermi Large-Area Telescope. The global
properties of this population remain relatively unconstrained despite many
attempts to model their spatial and luminosity distributions. We perform here a
self-consistent Bayesian analysis of both the spatial distribution and
luminosity function simultaneously. Distance uncertainties, arising from errors
in the parallax measurement or Galactic electron-density model, are
marginalized over. We provide a public Python package for calculating distance
uncertainties to pulsars derived using the dispersion measure by accounting for
the uncertainties in Galactic electron-density model YMW16. Finally, we use
multiple parameterizations for the MSP population and perform Bayesian model
comparison, finding that a broken power law luminosity function with Lorimer
spatial profile are preferred over multiple other parameterizations used in the
past. The best-fit spatial distribution and number of -ray MSPs is
consistent with results for the radio population of MSPs.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables + Appendix. Public code and source list

Spin Dependence of Deep Inelastic Diffraction
Using a perturbative model for diffractive interactions, we derive an
expression for the polarized diffractive structure function in the high
energy limit. This structure function is given by the interference of
diffractive amplitudes with polarized and unpolarized exchanges. For the
polarized exchange we consider both two-gluon and quark-antiquark amplitudes.
The polarized diffractive amplitude receives sizable contributions from
non-strongly ordered regions in phase space, resulting in a double logarithmic
enhancement at small . The resummation of these double logarithmic terms is
outlined. We also discuss the transition from our perturbative expression to
the nonperturbative region. A first numerical estimate indicates that the
perturbative contribution to the spin asymmetry is substantially larger than
the nonperturbative one.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, 1 figure include
Spatial distribution of ions in a linear octopole radio-frequency ion trap in the space-charge limit
We have explored the spatial distribution of an ion cloud trapped in a linear
octopole radio-frequency (rf) ion trap. The two-dimensional distribution of the
column density of stored silver dimer cations was measured via
photofragment-ion yields as a function of the position of the incident laser
beam over the transverse cross section of the trap. The profile of the ion
distribution was found to be dependent on the number of loaded ions. Under high
ion-loading conditions with a significant space-charge effect, ions form a ring
profile with a maximum at the outer region of the trap, whereas they are
localized near the center axis region at low loading of the ions. These results
are explained quantitatively by a model calculation based on equilibrium
between the space-charge-induced potential and the effective potential of the
multipole rf field. The maximum adiabaticity parameter \eta_max is estimated to
be about 0.13 for the high ion-density condition in the present octopole ion
trap, which is lower than typical values reported for low ion densities; this
is probably due to additional instability caused by the space charge.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Consumer acceptance of novel fruits and fruit products
The task of the Deliverable 1.3.7 Report on case studies of fruit innovations is to provide information on consumers' acceptance of innovative fruit and fruit products selected for case studies in Deliverable 1.3.2 List of selected fruit innovations, and to validate findings from previous stages of WP 1.3 research. The task of the Deliverable 1.3.9 List of characteristics for future fruit innovations is to provide a list of product characteristics and recommendations that can increase the success of fruit innovations in the future. This report presents results of case studies carried out in February and March, 2010, in four European countries: Greece, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain. It also presents product characteristics accepted by consumers and recommendations for development of future innovative fresh fruits and fruit products, as well as recommended strategies and policies, which were formulated on the basis of findings of case study and previous stages of WP1.3 research and their validation
Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson: The Supreme Court\u27s Recognition of the Hostile Environment in Sexual Harassment Claims
This casenote will examine Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson in light of the brief legal history of Title VII sexual harassment claims and will consider the implications of both the Court\u27s holding and its dicta regarding the undecided issues
Colored Spin Systems, BKP Evolution and finite N_c effects
Even within the framework of the leading logarithmic approximation the
eigenvalues of the BKP kernel for states of more than three reggeized gluons
are unknown in general, contrary to the planar limit case where the problem
becomes integrable. We consider a 4-gluon kernel for a finite number of colors
and define some simple toy models for the configuration space dynamics, which
are directly solvable with group theoretical methods. Then we study the
dependence of the spectrum of these models with respect to the number of colors
and make comparisons with the large limit case.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, references update, to appear on EPJ
Consumer acceptance of novel fruits and fruit products
This report presents results of the consumer survey that was conducted in November, 2009, in four European countries â Poland, the Netherlands, Greece and Spain within WP 1.3 of ISAFRUIT Project. In the current deliverables (D1.3.5 and D1.3.8), the authors first focused on the influence of personal characteristics of the respondents, the evaluation of general fruit product characteristics, product evaluations of specific novel fresh fruits and fruit products and demographics on consumers' acceptance of fruit innovations. Furthermore, they identified cross cultural consumer segments, who each value different product characteristics. Moreover, these consumer segments differ in demographics, their willingness to accept fruit innovations and their personal characteristics. Policy recommendations for future product development of fresh fruits and fruit products and communication strategies were formulated, based on the results of the consumer survey and the identified cross cultural consumer segments
