A comparison of DA white dwarf temperatures and gravities from Lyman and Balmer line studies
We present measurements of the effective temperatures and surface gravities
for a sample of hot DA white dwarfs, using the Lyman line data available from
the HUT, ORFEUS and FUSE far-UV space missions. Comparing the results with
those from the standard Balmer line technique, we find that there is a general
good overall agreement between the two methods. However, significant
differences are found for a number of stars, but not always of a consistent
nature in that sometimes the Balmer temperature exceeds that derived from the
Lyman lines and in other instances is lower. We conclude that, with the latest
model atmosphere calculations, these discrepancies probably do not arise from
an inadequate theoretical treatment of the Lyman lines but rather from
systematic effects in the observation and data reduction processes, which
dominate the statistical errors in these spectra. If these systematic data
reduction effects can be adequately controlled, the Lyman line temperature and
gravity measurements are consistent with those obtained from the Balmer lines

The Town of Wakefield has experienced an unprecedented growth explosion in the past seven years. Pressures to use heretofore undeveloped land for the construction of residential housing has threatened the natural resources of this community. The projected growth rate has the potential to severely impact Wakefield’s natural resources. While the town has undertaken a comprehensive revision of zoning, site plan and subdivision regulations, it is important that voluntary land protection measures are advanced to secure permanent protection of valuable resources
Spectroscopic confirmation of a white dwarf companion to the B star 16 Dra
Using an Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) spectrum, we confirm the
identification of a white dwarf companion to the B9.5V star 16 Dra (HD150100),
and constrain its surface temperature to lie between 29,000K and 35,000K. This
is the third B star + white dwarf non-interacting Sirius-type binary to be
confirmed, after y Pup (HR2875, HD59635) and theta Hya (HR3665, HD79469). 16
Dra and its white dwarf companion are members of a larger resolved proper
motion system including the B9V star 17 Dra A (HD150117). The white dwarf must
have evolved from a progenitor more massive than this star, i.e. ~3.7 solar
masses. White dwarf companions to B stars are important since they set an
observational limit on the maximum mass for white dwarf progenitors, and can
potentially be used to investigate the high mass ends of the initial-final mass

What Counselors Need to Know About Health Care Reform
More than 60 years after President Truman wrote those words and nearly 100 years since health insurance was proposed by Teddy Roosevelt, the United States has joined the rest of the developed nations in initiating a health care system aimed at establishing universal insurance coverage. President Barack Obama and his colleagues in the House and Senate succeeded where many, many others failed, but just barely. The legislation, described as "similar in scope to Great Society and New Deal programs," was enacted "without the benefit of the congressional majorities of those eras" (Oberlander, 2010). For some health care advocates, the law was a disappointment, as it missed opportunity to establish a "public option" for health insurance, a publicly financed and operated program similar to Medicare to provide broad coverage. For others, the legislation constituted the transformation of the United States into a socialist state, somehow endangering America's "freedoms." The reality is that the new law keeps the predominant role of private insurance coverage and welds it to a new framework of rules, investments in improving the effectiveness and efficiency of care, and a strengthened public health sector to establish a more rational system. The law will have a significant impact oi:i counselors as both consumers and providers of health care services, and its enactment has implications for counselor advocacy
A photospheric metal line profile analysis of hot DA white dwarfs with circumstellar material
Some hot DA white dwarfs have circumstellar high ion absorption features in
their spectra, in addition to those originating in the photosphere. In many
cases, the line profiles of these absorbing components are unresolved. Given
the importance of the atmospheric composition of white dwarfs to studies of
stellar evolution, extra-solar planetary systems and the interstellar medium,
we examine the effect of including circumstellar line profiles in the abundance
estimates of photospheric metals in six DA stars. The photospheric C and Si
abundances are reduced in five cases where the circumstellar contamination is
strong, though the relative weakness of the circumstellar Si IV absorption
introduces minimal contamination, resulting in a small change in abundance. The
inability of previous, approximate models to reproduce the photospheric line
profiles here demonstrates the need for a technique that accounts for the
physical line profiles of both the circumstellar and photospheric lines when

A search for hidden white dwarfs in the ROSAT EUV survey II: Discovery of a distant DA+F6/7V binary system in a direction of low density neutral hydrogen
We report the results of our final search for hot white dwarfs in unresolved,
Sirius-type, binary systems with IUE. One new system, RE J0500-364 (DA+F6/7V),
has been identified. This star appears to lie at a distance of between
500-1000pc, making it one of the most distant white dwarfs, if not the most
distant, to be detected in the EUV surveys. The very low line-of-sight neutral
hydrogen volume density to this object could place a lower limit on the length
of the Beta CMa interstellar tunnel of diffuse gas, which stretches away from

Effective area calibration of the reflection grating spectrometers of XMM-Newton. II. X-ray spectroscopy of DA white dwarfs
White dwarf spectra have been widely used as a calibration source for X-ray
and EUV instruments. The in-flight effective area calibration of the reflection
grating spectrometers (RGS) of XMM-Newton depend upon the availability of
reliable calibration sources. We investigate how well these white dwarf spectra
can be used as standard candles at the lowest X-ray energies in order to gauge
the absolute effective area scale of X-ray instruments. We calculate a grid of
model atmospheres for Sirius B and HZ 43A, and adjust the parameters using
several constraints until the ratio of the spectra of both stars agrees with
the ratio as observed by the low energy transmission grating spectrometer
(LETGS) of Chandra. This ratio is independent of any errors in the effective
area of the LETGS. We find that we can constrain the absolute X-ray spectrum of
both stars with better than 5 % accuracy. The best-fit model for both stars is
close to a pure hydrogen atmosphere, and we put tight limits to the amount of
helium or the thickness of a hydrogen layer in both stars. Our upper limit to
the helium abundance in Sirius B is 4 times below the previous detection based
on EUVE data. We also find that our results are sensitive to the adopted
cut-off in the Lyman pseudo-continuum opacity in Sirius B. We get best
agreement with a long wavelength cut-off. White dwarf model atmospheres can be
used to derive the effective area of X-ray spectrometers in the lowest energy
band. An accuracy of 3-4 % in the absolute effective area can be achieved.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy &

Hidden Subluminous sd/wd among the FAUST UV sources toward OPHIUCHUS
A UV image in the direction of Ophiuchus, obtained with the FAUST instrument
is analysed. Suitable candidates as unrecognized subluminous stars are selected
comparing the observed UV flux to the predicted one. The uv-excess objects were
observed at the 1.0 m Wise telescope. This method yields to the detection of
eight broad Balmer lines objects. Six are classified as sds and two wds,
comparing the Hbeta line profile with that of stellar model atmospheres.Comment: 2 pages, including 2 figures. To appear in the Proceedings of the
