Childrenâs literature has always featured school classrooms with stories, novels and poems full of references to the world of school. The classroom, in fact, represents an important moment in everyoneâs experience and development because it is at school that girls and boys begin to grow outside of the family context, building relationships with their peers and adults other than their parents. Using examples from stories from yesterday and today, we try to highlight how the protagonists of these stories are able to offer an oftenirreverent look at this educational institution, capturing and revealing its failures and drifts.
The theme of the renovatio constitutes one of the most frequent openings in Pro- vençal poetry. In Raimbaut dâAurengaâs Ab nou cor et ab nou talen (BdT 389,1), ll. 31-35 the ladyâs smile is related to the smile of God and the angels. The image, unique in the lyric tradition, brings immediately to mind Beatriceâs smile in Par. XXVII. The possibility that Dante may be quoting Raimbaut is supported by the argument that in the canto Dante retraces the stages of his love for Beatrice and the definitive abandonment of earthy love. Raimbautâs poem could therefore narrate, in a nutshell, the journey from love as renovatio (Vita Nova) to the contemplation of the ladyâs riso in Paradise
Trovatori petrosi. Marcabru, Raimbaut dâAurenga, Arnaut Daniel:
This work develops the relationship between Danteâs âpetroseâ and the âclusâ line of trobar and its main representatives. In the development of Danteâs composition technique we can observe moments of returns, retractions and overcoming of models: the mediation of Guittone as a filter for the formation of a canon of âuncomfortable troubadoursâ is therefore essential to understand Danteâs debt to the previous tradition. The investigation also promotes Raimbaut dâAurenga as an important troubadour within the line of development that will lead to Arnaut Danielâs sestina and to Dante.
Rapid emergency assessment of ash and gas hazard for future eruptions at Santorini Volcano, Greece
Hazard assessments for long-dormant volcanoes, where information is rarely available, typically have to be made rapidly and in the face of considerable uncertainty and often poor information. A conditional (assuming an eruption), scenario-based probabilistic approach to such an assessment is presented here for Santorini volcano (Greece). The rapid assessment was developed and implemented in response to the 2011-2012 unrest crisis in order to inform emergency management and planning. This paper synthesises the results presented to the Greek National Committee and scientific community involved. Two plausible eruptions at Santorini were investigated, using multiple inputs and dispersal models, based on observations of historic eruptions and expert judgement. For ash hazard, a 'most likely' eruption scenario was developed, characterised by slow lava extrusion over periods of one to two years with weak but persistent explosions and ash venting up to 3 km. A second 'largest considered' sub-Plinian explosive scenario assumed a 12 km high column of 4-h duration. For gas hazard, constant fluxes of 200 and 800 tons/day SO2 were assumed for the duration of the eruption scenarios, noting that there is very little evidence to constrain SO2 flux from Santorini eruptions. Statistical models of likely wind conditions with height and season were developed from decadal reanalysis time series showing that consistent low-altitude winds were rarely maintained for more than a few days. Stochastic models of ash (TEPHRA2, VOL-CALPUFF) and gas (AERMOD) dispersal provided outputs in the form of probability maps and exceedance probability curves for key loading and concentration thresholds at important locations on the island. The results from the rapid assessments presented in this paper confirm that ash and gas hazard is likely to be of concern if an eruption of Santorini occurs. Higher hazard may be expected to the south and east of the volcano, notably at important tourist and transport hubs. Low hazard to the north and northwest suggests that these may be suitable locations for emergency response centres and emergency critical infrastructure. This approach may provide a blueprint for rapid ash and gas assessment for other long-dormant volcanoes and we provide suggestions for refining the methods used.</p

About Antonio Rubinoâs Viperetta: coming-of-age novel and âimagining machineâ
Antonio Rubinoâs novel Viperetta (1919) is the mature work of an author already known in the context of childrenâs literature mainly for his activity as an illustrator for some covers of âIl giornalino della Domenicaâ and drawings for Andersenâs fairy tales and as a contributor to the âCorriere dei Piccoliâ. In this context, Viperetta immediately presents itself as an editorial object of particular cultural-historical interest, both because of the specific relationship that Rubino establishes between the textual part and the body of the images, and because it is presented as a coming-of-age novel, with a female protagonist, which, fitting into the tradition of the marvelous journey to the moon, takes on the contours of a rite of passage, turning the protagonist into a fairy-tale child. The article purports to emphasize these aspects, trying to show how Viperetta bases on these two elements the distinctive features of its originality and narrative power, still alive after more than a hundred years
