    The East India Company\u27s 1835 Currency Reform

    This paper examines the East India Company’s 1835 currency reform. The measure created, for the first time, a unified currency within the Company’s Indian territories. Moreover, it stopped the longstanding practices of minting rupees in the Mughal Emperor’s name and solely in Persian, and instead introduced coins that featured the bust of the British King along with the Company’s name and the denomination written in English. Because coins are among the most evident ways states express their sense of self and power, the political effect of the reform was to underscore the decades-long process whereby the Company phased out Mughal idioms of rule and instead introduced a colonial form of governance. Thus, an examination of the philosophy behind this reform, and the developments leading to its passage, including previous attempts to create a unified currency, sheds light on one of the central debates among Company historians: how, and how rapidly, did the Company create a colonial state? The paper explains the growth of separate currency systems within the Company’s territories, outlines the arguments made by Company officials in 1806 for unifying the currency, notes the Company’s great interest in the success of an allied state (Awadh) in shedding all reference to the Mughal emperor in its own coinage, and explains why comprehensive reform was not introduced until 1835

    Towards a High Energy Theory for the Higgs Phase of Gravity

    Spontaneous Lorentz violation due to a time-dependent expectation value for a massless scalar has been suggested as a method for dynamically generating dark energy. A natural candidate for the scalar is a Goldstone boson arising from the spontaneous breaking of a U(1) symmetry. We investigate the low-energy effective action for such a Goldstone boson in a general class of models involving only scalars, proving that if the scalars have standard kinetic terms then at the {\em classical} level the effective action does not have the required features for spontaneous Lorentz violation to occur asymptotically (t)(t \to \infty) in an expanding FRW universe. Then we study the large NN limit of a renormalizable field theory with a complex scalar coupled to massive fermions. In this model an effective action for the Goldstone boson with the properties required for spontaneous Lorentz violation can be generated. Although the model has shortcomings, we feel it represents progress towards finding a high energy completion for the Higgs phase of gravity.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures;fixed typos and added reference

    Ethnicity and the Writing of Medieval Scottish history

    Historians have long tended to define medieval Scottish society in terms of interactions between ethnic groups. This approach was developed over the course of the long nineteenth century, a formative period for the study of medieval Scotland. At that time, many scholars based their analysis upon scientific principles, long since debunked, which held that medieval 'peoples' could only be understood in terms of 'full ethnic packages'. This approach was combined with a positivist historical narrative that defined Germanic Anglo-Saxons and Normans as the harbingers of advances of Civilisation. While the prejudices of that era have largely faded away, the modern discipline still relies all too often on a dualistic ethnic framework. This is particularly evident in a structure of periodisation that draws a clear line between the 'Celtic' eleventh century and the 'Norman' twelfth. Furthermore, dualistic oppositions based on ethnicity continue, particularly in discussions of the law, kingship, lordship and religion

    An examination of how voluntary international netball officials view and experience well-being

    Research aimThe purpose of this research was to explore the views and experiences of international volunteer netball officials about their well-being and its contributing factors.Research methodsA qualitative methodology, involving semi-structured interviews, was used. Fourteen participants (10 females and 4 males) occupying different official and official coach roles at the highest qualification tier were interviewed from across all five global netball regions. A thematic analysis was used to inductively code interviews to investigate well-being perspectives and influencing factors.Results and findingsFive main themes were found to most affect netball officials’ well-being: (i) structured support: uneven or absent; (ii) juggling and prioritising; (iii) feedback: private praise, public criticism and feeling under-valued; (iv) the mentally prepared official; and (v) being a successful “brand”. General findings showed a perceived stigma around revealing well-being issues, the need for further organisational resources and support and unfairness that might contribute to the well-being of officials in high-performance sport.ImplicationsThe findings suggest a greater focus on individualised and peer-based support mechanisms, other education to enhance well-being literacy and the need for explanation and improvements to be made to processes surrounding the progression pathway.Research contributionThe research provides new insights that contribute to the current lack of knowledge about well-being in volunteer sport official populations and uniquely studies this in a high-performance, international sport setting

    erbB3 recruitment of insulin receptor substrate 1 modulates insulin-like growth factor receptor signalling in oestrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cell lines

    Introduction Recently we reported that insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1), classically an adaptor protein for the insulin-like growth factor type I receptor (IGF-IR), associates with the epidermal growth factor receptor in oestrogen receptor (ER)-positive (ER+) tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer cells. In this study, we examined whether IRS-1 also associates with another erbB receptor family member, erbB3, and what impact this might have on IGF-IR signalling in three ER+ breast cancer cell lines. Methods Immunoprecipitation and Western blot analysis were utilised to examine the potential association between erbB3 and IRS-1 in MCF-7, T47D and BT-474 cells in the absence and presence of the erbB3/4 ligand heregulin β1 (HRGβ1). Subsequently, the impact of a selective IGF-IR/IR inhibitor 4-anilino-5-bromo-2-[4-(2-hydroxy-3-(N, N-dimethylamino)propoxy)anilino]pyrimidine on this association and HRGβ1 signalling was assessed in these cell lines. Immunohistochemical analysis of a small cohort of ER+ breast cancer patient samples was also performed to determine the potential clinical relevance of this novel interaction. Results Immunoprecipitation and Western blot analysis revealed an interaction between erbB3 and IRS-1 in MCF-7, T47D and BT-474 cells, with HRGβ1 significantly enhancing this recruitment and promoting IRS-1 phosphorylation at Y612. IRS-1 participates in erbB3 signalling in MCF-7 and T47D cells as IRS-1 knockdown impaired HRGβ1 signalling. Importantly, recruitment of IRS-1 by erbB3 reduced IRS-1 association with IGF-IR in MCF-7 and T47D cells, whilst blockade of IGF-IR-enhanced erbB3-IRS-1 interaction and sensitised both cell lines to HRGβ1, allowing HRGβ1 to override IGF-IR blockade. Consequently, suppression of IRS-1 signalling enhanced the effects of IGF-IR inhibition in these cells. This novel interaction may have clinical relevance, as immunohistochemical analysis of a small ER+ breast tumour series revealed significant positive correlations between phosphorylated IRS-1 Y612 expression and total erbB3, phosphorylated Akt and Ki-67 expression. Conclusions IRS-1 can be recruited to IGF-IR and erbB3 in ER+ breast cancer cells, and this provides an adaptive resistance mechanism when these receptors are targeted individually. Consequently, cotargeting IGF-IR and either erbB3 or IRS-1 should prove to be a more effective strategy for the treatment of ER+ breast cancer

    Increased Ret signalling and impact of vandetanib in acquired tamoxifen resistant breast cancer

    Deregulation of the tyrosine kinase Ret and its coreceptors (GFRα) has been implicated in neoplasia, and Ret is of interest as a therapeutic target in endocrine-treated breast cancer. This study evaluated in vitro impact of vandetanib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor able to target Ret in addition to EGFR and VEGFR2, in ER+ breast cancer cells that have acquired resistance to tamoxifen treatment. Tamoxifen resistant TAMR and endocrine responsive MCF7 cells were grown in vitro for 7 days +/- vandetanib (0.5-5μM) +/- exogenous growth factors (10-50ng/ml), and also in continuous culture with vandetanib (1μM), to monitor growth impact and emergence of vandetanib resistance. For Western blotting or immunoprecipitation, log phase cells were transferred for 24hr to serum-free medium and pre-treated for 1hr +/- vandetanib followed by Ret ligands GDNF or artemin for 5mins. Immunohistochemistry for Ret activity was performed on an ER+ tamoxifen-treated clinical breast cancer TMA sample series using Y1062 Ret phospho-antibody with HScore staining assessment. Growth of TAMR cells was substantially inhibited by vandetanib (p<0.001, IC50 0.6μM) with complete cell loss by 17weeks, contrasting rapid emergence of resistance in endocrine responsive MCF7 cells. TAMR cells were more sensitive to vandetanib vs. gefitinib (p<0.001; 1μM each agent), indicating mitogenic signalling in addition to EGFR contributed to TAMR growth. TAMR cells had elevated basal Ret expression, activity and interaction with elevated GFRα3 coreceptor expression; mature VEGFR2 was not detected in TAMR cells. Exogenous GFRα3 ligands artemin or GDNF modestly stimulated TAMR cell growth and hyperactivated Ret, downstream kinases (including MAPK, AKT) and ER Ser167, confirming functional GFRα/Ret signalling and its cross-talk with ER. Increased phospho-Ret immunostaining was also associated with shortened DFI (p=0.036) and survival (p=0.011) in tamoxifen-treated clinical ER+ breast cancers. Vandetanib (0.5-1μM) depleted GFRα3/Ret activity and decreased phospho-EGFR in TAMR cells under basal and Ret ligand-stimulated conditions, inhibited MAPK, p70S6K and S6RP phosphorylation, and partially-reduced levels of phospho-AKT and phospho-ER. However, vandetanib failed to consistently impact on HER2, 3 or 4 activity; moreover, hyperactivation of all erbB receptors by exogenous heregulin B1 (10ng/ml) recovered AKT, MAPK, p70S6K and ER AF-1 phosphorylation in the presence of vandetanib and was able to overcome the basal growth-inhibitory impact of this agent in TAMR cells. These findings demonstrate a central importance for increased Ret signalling and its cross-talk with ER in tamoxifen resistant breast cancer that can be targeted in vitro by vandetanib. Further studies are required to determine optimal combination treatments with vandetanib to circumvent potential intrinsic resistance in clinical breast cancers that exhibit heregulin B1 enrichment

    Middle and Late Pleistocene environmental history of the Marsworth area, south-central England

    To elucidate the Middle and Late Pleistocene environmental history of south-central England, we report the stratigraphy, sedimentology, palaeoecology and geochronology of some deposits near the foot of the Chiltern Hills scarp at Marsworth, Buckinghamshire. The Marsworth site is important because its sedimentary sequences contain a rich record of warm stages and cold stages, and it lies close to the Anglian glacial limit. Critical to its history are the origin and age of a brown pebbly silty clay (diamicton) previously interpreted as weathered till. The deposits described infill a river channel incised into chalk bedrock. They comprise clayey, silty and gravelly sediments, many containing locally derived chalk and some with molluscan, ostracod and vertebrate remains. Most of the deposits are readily attributed to periglacial and fluvial processes, and some are dated by optically stimulated luminescence to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6. Although our sedimentological data do not discriminate between a glacial or periglacial interpretation of the diamicton, amino-acid dating of three molluscan taxa from beneath it indicates that it is younger than MIS 9 and older than MIS 5e. This makes a glacial interpretation unlikely, and we interpret the diamicton as a periglacial slope deposit. The Pleistocene history reconstructed for Marsworth identifies four key elements: (1) Anglian glaciation during MIS 12 closely approached Marsworth, introducing far-travelled pebbles such as Rhaxella chert and possibly some fine sand minerals into the area. (2) Interglacial environments inferred from fluvial sediments during MIS 7 varied from fully interglacial conditions during sub-stages 7e and 7c, cool temperate conditions during sub-stage 7b or 7a, temperate conditions similar to those today in central England towards the end of the interglacial, and cool temperate conditions during sub-stage 7a. (3) Periglacial activity during MIS 6 involved thermal contraction cracking, permafrost development, fracturing of chalk bedrock, fluvial activity, slopewash, mass movement and deposition of loess and coversand. (4) Fully interglacial conditions during sub-stage 5e led to renewed fluvial activity, soil formation and acidic weathering
