Inteligibilidade e Mediatismo

Neste artigo, dividido em duas partes, discute-se a validade, e a possibilidade, do discurso científico num contexto governado pelo mediatismo e imediatismo da comunicação. Na primeira parte é feito um breve excurso a propósito de questões epistemológicas. Alan Kurdi - análise de uma fotografia de imprensa

O artigo objetiva discutir aspectos estéticos, éticos, ontológicos e semióticos do fotojornalismo, cujo objeto é a imagem do menino Alan Kurdi, morto na Turquia. Metodologicamente, o levantamento das matérias publicadas pelos jornais no dia seguinte ao fato analisa o problema da responsabilidade da imprensa na retratação do horror. Assim, buscam-se evidências para as hipóteses da banalização da imagem, afastamento da realidade e fragmentação do sentido para o leitor. Os resultados mostram o poder do fotojornalismo na criação e legitimação do imaginário coletivo. As análises permitem concluir que, ao publicar um retrato definitivo da história, os jornais ressaltam a consciência da responsabilidade social.The article aims to discuss aesthetic, ethical, ontological and semiotic aspects of photojournalism, whose object is the image of the boy Alan Kurdi, who died in Turkey. Methodologically, the survey of the articles published by newspapers the day after the fact analyzes the problem of the responsibility of the press in portraying the horror. Thus, evidence is sought for the hypotheses of image trivialization, departure from reality and fragmentation of meaning for the reader. The results show the power of photojournalism in creating and legitimizing the collective imagination. Analysis allows us to conclude that, when publishing a definitive portrait of history, newspapers emphasize the awareness of social responsibility.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Instituciones con mayor capital científico del campo desarrollo comunitario en Latinoamérica

El desarrollo comunitario, como perspectiva, representa una gran oportunidad para los países latinoamericanos. La institucionalización del campo científico desarrollo comunitario en América Latina no ha sido estudiado con anterioridad. Se planteó como objetivo identificar las características del desarrollo comunitario como campo científico en Latinoamérica a partir del análisis de instituciones relativas al mismo. El presente estudio clasificó como descriptivo con aporte teórico, además de ser longitudinal-retrospectivo. Para la obtención de resultados se emplearon métodos en los niveles teórico y empírico, fundamentalmente el método bibliométrico. Se obtiene como resultados que la institución más productiva del campo fue la Universidad Autónoma de México, la misma oferta múltiples programas de formación posgraduada sobre el desarrollo local y comunitario. El resto de las instituciones con mayor capital científico fueron la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, la Universidad de Buenos Aires y la Universidad de la Habana. En el campo científico desarrollo comunitario en Latinoamérica, la revista más productiva es Interações, seguida de Estudios y Perspectivas en Turismo y Eure. La revista Interações de la Universidad Católica Don Bosco, Brasil, es la única revista especializada del campo. La Revista EURE es la mejor posicionada en el campo desarrollo comunitario, sin embargo no puede clasificarse como una publicación especializada del mismo. En el campo científico desarrollo comunitario en Latinoamérica no se evidencian amplias relaciones de colaboración entre instituciones, la mayor parte de la colaboración es intranacional

Discrepancies in breast cancer’s oncological outcomes between public and private institutions in the southeast region of Brazil: a retrospective cohort study

BackgroundBrazil is a middle-income country with inequalities in its healthcare system. The disparities between public and private services affect the diagnosis and treatment of patients with breast cancer. The aim of this study is to assess whether disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) are different in public and private specialized centers.Patient and methodsA retrospective cohort study with 1,545 breast cancer patients diagnosed from 2003 to 2011 at Barretos Cancer Hospital—BCH (public group, N = 1,408) and InORP Oncoclinicas (private group, N = 137) was conducted. A 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was used to adjust the differences between the groups’ characteristics (n = 137 in each group).ResultsThe median age at diagnosis was 54.4 years. Estimated DFS rates at 1, 5, and 10 years were 96.0%, 71.8%, and 59.6%, respectively, at BCH and 97.8%, 86.9%, and 78%, respectively, at InORP (HR: 2.09; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.41–3.10; p < 0.0001). Estimated OS rates at 1, 5, and 10 years were 98.1%, 78.5%, and 65.4%, respectively, at BCH and 99.3%, 94.5%, and 91.9%, respectively, at InORP (HR: 3.84; 95% CI, 2.16–6.82; p < 0.0001). After adjustment by PSM, DFS and OS results in 1, 3, and 5 years remained worse in the public service compared to the private service.ConclusionPatients treated in a public center have worse DFS and OS after a follow-up period of more than 5 years. These results were corroborated after carrying out the PSM

Impact of COVID-19 on cardiovascular testing in the United States versus the rest of the world

Objectives: This study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-US institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Methods: Data were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States. Results: Reductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p < 0.001). Significantly more U.S. facilities reported increased use of telehealth and patient screening measures than non-U.S. facilities, such as temperature checks, symptom screenings, and COVID-19 testing. Reductions in volumes of procedures differed between U.S. regions, with larger declines observed in the Northeast (76%) and Midwest (74%) than in the South (62%) and West (44%). Prevalence of COVID-19, staff redeployments, outpatient centers, and urban centers were associated with greater reductions in volume in U.S. facilities in a multivariable analysis. Conclusions: We observed marked reductions in U.S. cardiovascular testing in the early phase of the pandemic and significant variability between U.S. regions. The association between reductions of volumes and COVID-19 prevalence in the United States highlighted the need for proactive efforts to maintain access to cardiovascular testing in areas most affected by outbreaks of COVID-19 infection

Innovación en las enseñanzas universitarias: experiencias presentadas en las III Jornadas de Innovación Educativa de la ULL

En este libro se recoge un conjunto de experiencias de innovación educativa desarrolladas en la ULL en el curso 2011-12. Se abordan distintos ámbitos y ramas del conocimiento, y ocupan temáticas variadas que han sido desarrolladas con rigor, y con un claro potencial para su extrapolación a efectos de la mejora educativa en el ámbito universitario. Esta publicación constituye una primera edición de una serie que irá recogiendo las experiencias de innovación educativa de la ULL. Este es un paso relevante para su impulso en nuestra institución, como lo es el de su vinculación con la investigación educativa, para potenciar su publicación en las revistas científicas en este ámbito cada vez más pujante y relevante para las universidades. Sobre todo representan el deseo y el compromiso del profesorado de la ULL para la mejora del proceso educativo mediante la investigación, la evaluación y la reflexión compartida de nuestras prácticas y planteamientos docentes

Este artigo procura estabelecer correspondências entre algumas obras e artistas plásticos portugueses e o universo da poesia visual. Esta temática é indissociável de uma discussão sobre a poesia portuguesa dos anos 60, a sua mensagem de rotura, as clivagens e as expectativas geradas por alguns autores. A remissão escrita-pintura e a perspectiva de Ana Hatherly sobre este jogo é igualmente tida em consideração e comentada. A evocação da revista KWY, o contexto internacional da sua intervenção e programa estético que a anima, sinalizam algumas preocupações em torno do alcance de práticas e experimentações centradas no gesto, escrita e signo no panorama da arte portuguesa da segunda metade do século XX.This article seeks to establish correspondences between some works and Portuguese artists and the universe of visual poetry. This theme is inseparable from a discussion on Portuguese poetry of the 60s, its message of rupture, the cleavages and the expectations generated by some authors. The interaction writing-painting and the perspective of Ana Hatherly about this game is also taken into consideration and discussed. The evocation of KWY magazine, the international context of their intervention and the aesthetic program that animates it, indicate some concerns about the scope of practice and experimentation focused on gesture, sign and writing in the panorama of Portuguese Art of the second half of the twentieth century

Hitchcock presumível leitor de Poe

O presente texto suscita uma pergunta: porque é que Hitchcock nunca se sentiu motivado para realizar um filme adaptado de um texto E. A. Poe, sendo notória a existência de semelhanças entre o mundo ficcional destes dois artistas. A relação entre o olhar e o medo, mistério e realidade, ansiedade e ilusão, são apenas alguns dos traços comuns ao cineasta e ao escritor. Como hipótese de conclusão abrem-se perspectivas sobre a validade do conceito de suspense ser utilizado como instrumento estético na análise crítica dos contos de Poe. The relationship between the look and fear, mystery and reality, anxiety and illusion, are just a few common traits both in the director’s and writer’s style.
