Synchronization in networks of networks: the onset of coherent collective behavior in systems of interacting populations of heterogeneous oscillators

The onset of synchronization in networks of networks is investigated. Specifically, we consider networks of interacting phase oscillators in which the set of oscillators is composed of several distinct populations. The oscillators in a given population are heterogeneous in that their natural frequencies are drawn from a given distribution, and each population has its own such distribution. The coupling among the oscillators is global, however, we permit the coupling strengths between the members of different populations to be separately specified. We determine the critical condition for the onset of coherent collective behavior, and develop the illustrative case in which the oscillator frequencies are drawn from a set of (possibly different) Cauchy-Lorentz distributions. One motivation is drawn from neurobiology, in which the collective dynamics of several interacting populations of oscillators (such as excitatory and inhibitory neurons and glia) are of interest.Comment: The original was replaced with a version that has been accepted to Phys. Starting from an exact formal identity for the two-state transverse Ising model and using correlation inequalities rigorous upper bounds for the critical temperature and the critical transverse field are obtained which improve effective results.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur

Exact Results for the Kuramoto Model with a Bimodal Frequency Distribution

We analyze a large system of globally coupled phase oscillators whose natural frequencies are bimodally distributed. The dynamics of this system has been the subject of long-standing interest. In 1984 Kuramoto proposed several conjectures about its behavior; ten years later, Crawford obtained the first analytical results by means of a local center manifold calculation. Nevertheless, many questions have remained open, especially about the possibility of global bifurcations. Here we derive the system's complete stability diagram for the special case where the bimodal distribution consists of two equally weighted Lorentzians. Using an ansatz recently discovered by Ott and Antonsen, we show that in this case the infinite-dimensional problem reduces exactly to a flow in four dimensions. Depending on the parameters and initial conditions, the long-term dynamics evolves to one of three states: incoherence, where all the oscillators are desynchronized; partial synchrony, where a macroscopic group of phase-locked oscillators coexists with a sea of desynchronized ones; and a standing wave state, where two counter-rotating groups of phase-locked oscillators emerge. Analytical results are presented for the bifurcation boundaries between these states. Similar results are also obtained for the case in which the bimodal distribution is given by the sum of two Gaussians.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev. E Added comment

Starter culture production in fluidized bed reactor with a flocculent strain ofL. plantarum

A lactic starter culture of a flocculentLactobacillus plantarum was produced in a fluidized bed reactor with higher cell volumetric productivities than in a continuous stirred tank reactor. The fluidized bed reactor was operated at optimised parameters obtained in batch reactor performed with and without pH control

Visualization of dynamics using local dynamic modelling with self organizing maps

In this work, we describe a procedure to visualize nonlinear process dynamics using a self-organizing map based local model dynamical estimator. The proposed method exploits the topology preserving nature of the resulting estimator to extract visualizations (planes) of insightful dynamical features, that allow to explore nonlinear systems whose behavior changes with the operating point. Since the visualizations are obtained from a dynamical model of the process, measures on the goodness of this estimator (such as RMSE or AIC) are also applicable as a measure of the trustfulness of the visualizations. To illustrate the application of the proposed method, an experiment to analyze the dynamics of a nonlinear system on different operating points is include

High cell density reactor for the production of Lactobacillus plantarum

The production of a flocculent strain of Lactobacillus plantarum was performed in a high cell density reactor: a fluidized bed reactor (FBR) with a settler and an external cell recirculation. Two variables were assessed, the recirculation rate (R) and the dilution rate (D). The effect of the latter is much more important than the effect of the former in ensuring a quick start up in the flocculation process. The cell volumetric productivities obtained with this system increase directly with dilution rate and recirculation rate. The values of cell volumetric productivities obtained are considerably higher than those obtained in continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR) and much higher than in batch reactors

Effect of baculovirus spodoptera isolates in Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae and their characterization by RAPD.

The total of 22 Baculovirus isolates surveyed in different corn producing regions in Brazil were used against fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). The viruses were purified and their suspensions were used to feed fall armyworm larvae from 4th and 5th instar. The mortality rate was checked daily and the infected larvae were frost after death, what generally occurred between the 5th and 7th day after virus ingestion. The 22 Baculovirus isolates were used in six concentrations (from 103 to 108 polyhedra/ml) and one check treatment with water. Mortality rate, larval period, pupal period, pupa weight and lethal concentration (LC50) were determined for all isolates. Significant differences were found among all isolates and different concentrations, also interaction between isolate x virus concentration for all characteristics evaluated, except for pupal period. Amplification patterns of 54 RAPD markers, being 41 polymorphic among the isolates, were used to evaluate the genetic distance and its correlation with the fall armyworm larvae mortality rate. The genetic diversity calculated by the Jaccard's coefficient using the molecular data allowed a division of the isolates into two groups, with a high level of confidence. These groups did not present any association with the mortality rate caused by the isolates or with their geographical distribution. However, a RAPD fragment OPW04.2280 was highly associated with the larvae mortality rate and with LC50, explaining 23 and 65% of the phenotypic variation for these traits among the isolates, respectively.

Citizen motivation on the go: the role of psychological empowerment

    Get PDF
Although advances in technology now enable people to communicate ‘anytime, anyplace’, it is not clear how citizens can be motivated to actually do so. This paper evaluates the impact of three principles of psychological empowerment, namely perceived self-efficacy, sense of community and causal importance, on public transport passengers’ motivation to report issues and complaints while on the move. A week-long study with 65 participants revealed that self-efficacy and causal importance increased participation in short bursts and increased perceptions of service quality over longer periods. Finally, we discuss the implications of these findings for citizen participation projects and reflect on design opportunities for mobile technologies that motivate citizen participation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
