    Mit dieser Doktorarbeit wurde das Konzept von gemischt bimetallischen Reagenzien erfolgreich eingefĂŒhrt. Hierbei wurden magnesierte Borester selektiv dargestellt und mit Elektrophilen umgesetzt. Dabei wurde der erste Halogen-Metall-Austausch in Gegenwart einer Borgruppe verwirklicht. Desweiteren wurden Reaktionen zur Funktionaliserung von Bororganylen etabliert, bei denen dem Produkt die wertvolle Kohlenstoff-Bor-Bindung erhalten bleibt und so weiteren Elaborierungen zur VerfĂŒgung steht. Ausserdem wurden magnesierte Acyl-substituierte Indolderivate durch eine Halogen-Magnesium-Austauschreaktion dargestellt. Im letzten Projekt wurden erfolgreich direkte mono- und multipel-magnesierte carbocyclische Arene mit TMPMgClLiCl dargestellt und mit Elektrophilen umgesetzt

    A Session Based Empirical Investigation of Web Usage

    This paper reports the results of a study of Web usage of 139 users over a 8 month period of time. It uses a longitudinal Web log analysis of the URLs accessed during 33916 user-days of Web usage. It aims to detect changes in Web usage associated with increased experience of using the Web. Specifically, it answers the question whether or not users shift from undirected browsing in the Web to directed access of Web sites as they gain expertise in using the Web. We used a session-based approach to measure individual Web usage. The results of our study have several important implications both for Business to Consumer electronic commerce and for public policy as it pertains to the digital divide

    Confirmation of cholera by rapid diagnostic test amongst patients admitted to the cholera treatment centre in Uvira, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

    INTRODUCTION: Cholera is endemic in the Eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 1978, and Uvira in South-Kivu has been reporting suspected cholera cases nearly every week for over a decade. The clinical case definition for suspected cholera is relatively non-specific, and cases are rarely confirmed by laboratory methods, especially in endemic settings. This may lead to over-estimation of cholera cases and limit effective public health responses. METHODS AND RESULTS: Between April 2016 and November 2017, 69% of the 2,059 patients admitted to the Uvira Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC) were tested for cholera with rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs). Of those admitted as suspected cholera cases, only 40% tested positive for cholera, equivalent to an estimated annual incidence of suspected/confirmed cholera in Uvira of 43.8 and 16.3 cases per 10,000 inhabitants respectively. A multivariable logistic regression indicates that boys aged 2 to 4 years, girls aged 5 to 15 years and adult men are respectively 1.9, 2.1 and 1.8 times more likely to test positive than adult women. On the contrary, boys under 2 are 10 times less likely to test positive. The odds of testing positive also increase as weekly admissions to the CTC rise, with up to a 5-fold increase observed during the weeks with the highest numbers of admissions compared to the lowest ones. Other predictors of cholera confirmation include duration of stay at the CTC, clinical outcome of admission, lower weekly rainfall and area of residence in Uvira, with the northern part of town having the highest confirmation rate. CONCLUSION: Cholera is an on-going public health problem in Uvira but the majority of suspected cases admitted to the CTC were found to be negative for cholera after RDT testing. These findings may have important implications for cholera control strategies in favour of interventions that address cholera and other diarrhoeal diseases alike

    Generation of a core set of items to develop classification criteria for Scleroderma renal crisis using consensus methodology

    BACKGROUND This project was undertaken to generate a core set of items to develop classification criteria for scleroderma renal crisis (SRC) using consensus methodology. METHODS An international, multidisciplinary panel of experts was invited to participate in a 3-round Delphi exercise developed using a survey based on items identified by a scoping review. In Round 1, participants were asked to identify omissions and clarify ambiguities regarding the items in the survey. In Round 2, participants were asked to rate the validity and feasibility of the items using Likert-type scales ranging from 1-9 (1= very invalid/unfeasible, 5 = uncertain, 9 = very valid/feasible). In Round 3, participants reviewed the results and comments of Round 2, and were asked to provide final ratings. Items rated as highly valid and feasible (both median scores ≄7) in Round 3 were selected as the provisional core set of items. A consensus meeting using nominal group technique (NGT) followed to further reduce the core set of items. RESULTS Ninety-nine experts from 16 countries participated in the Delphi exercise. Of the 31 items in the survey, consensus was achieved on 13, including hypertension, renal insufficiency, proteinuria and hemolysis. Eleven experts took part in the NGT discussion, where consensus was achieved in 5 domains: blood pressure, acute kidney injury, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, target organ dysfunction, and renal histopathology. CONCLUSIONS A core set of items that characterize SRC was identified using consensus methodology. This core set will be used in future data-driven phases of this project to develop classification criteria for SRC. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

    Salience games : private politics when public attention is limited

    We develop a theoretical model in which an industry and NGO play salience games - they act strategically to influence public attention to social impacts in the sector. Salience stimulates extra donations for the NGO, and thus firms have incentives to hide the damage they do to avoid public attention. How can an NGO design its mission (how to divide income between campaigning and other projects, and what sorts of campaigns to run) to thrive in such a setting? We show that when public attention is scarce, a greater campaign orientation induces industry to invest in greater obfuscation, starving the NGO of funds. The NGO in turn strategically biases its mission away from campaigns, and in favor of sector-wide versus firm-specific campaigns, but not by as much as a welfare-motivated planner would want. When public attention is avoided by a mixture of substantive and symbolic action, we show that a greater weight on the former induces the NGO to become more campaign-oriented, with social damage lower

    Strong genetic influences on the stability of autistic traits in childhood

    Objective: Disorders on the autism spectrum, as well as autistic traits in the general population, have been found to be both highly stable across age and highly heritable at individual ages. However, little is known about the overlap in genetic and environmental influences on autistic traits across age and the contribution of such influences to trait stability itself. The present study investigated these questions in a general population sample of twins. Method: More than 6,000 twin pairs were rated on an established scale of autistic traits by their parents at 8, 9, and 12 years of age and by their teachers at 9 and 12 years of age. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results: The results indicated that, consistently across raters, not only were autistic traits stable, and moderately to highly heritable at individual ages, there was also a high degree of overlap in genetic influences across age. Furthermore, autistic trait stability could largely be accounted for by genetic factors, with the environment unique to each twin playing a minor role. The environment shared by twins had virtually no effect on the longitudinal stability in autistic traits. Conclusions: Autistic traits are highly stable across middle childhood and this stability is caused primarily by genetic factors

    Trans Time: Safety, Privacy, and Content Warnings on a Transgender-Specific Social Media Site

    Trans people often use social media to connect with others, find and share resources, and post transition-related content. However, because most social media platforms are not built with trans people in mind and because online networks include people who may not accept one’s trans identity, sharing trans content can be difficult. We studied Trans Time, a social media site developed particularly for trans people to document transition and build community. We interviewed early Trans Time users (n = 6) and conducted focus groups with potential users (n = 21) to understand how a trans-specific site uniquely supports its users. We found that Trans Time has the potential to be a safe space, encourages privacy, and effectively enables its users to selectively view content using content warnings. Together, safety, privacy, and content warnings create an online space where trans people can simultaneously build community, find support, and express both the mundanity and excitement of trans life. Yet in each of these areas, we also learned ways that the site can improve.     AutoSpill is a principled framework that simplifies the analysis of multichromatic flow cytometry data.

    Compensating in flow cytometry is an unavoidable challenge in the data analysis of fluorescence-based flow cytometry. Even the advent of spectral cytometry cannot circumvent the spillover problem, with spectral unmixing an intrinsic part of such systems. The calculation of spillover coefficients from single-color controls has remained essentially unchanged since its inception, and is increasingly limited in its ability to deal with high-parameter flow cytometry. Here, we present AutoSpill, an alternative method for calculating spillover coefficients. The approach combines automated gating of cells, calculation of an initial spillover matrix based on robust linear regression, and iterative refinement to reduce error. Moreover, autofluorescence can be compensated out, by processing it as an endogenous dye in an unstained control. AutoSpill uses single-color controls and is compatible with common flow cytometry software. AutoSpill allows simpler and more robust workflows, while reducing the magnitude of compensation errors in high-parameter flow cytometry
