The Bodily Movements of Liars
We measured the continuous bodily motion of participants as they lied to experimenters. These lies were spontaneous rather than elicited, and occurred for different motivations. In one situation, participants were given the opportunity to lie about their performance on a maths test in order to win money. In another, they witnessed one experimenter accidentally break a laptop. When asked what had happened, participants were motivated to lie and deny any knowledge. Across these situations, participants lied 61% of the time, allowing us to contrast the body movements of liars with truth tellers as they answered neutral and critical questions. Those who lied had significantly reduced bodily motion. In one case this motion appeared before the experimenter had even asked the critical question. We conclude that a person’s bodily dynamics can be indicative of their cognitive and effective states, even when they would rather conceal them
Nickel Mixing in the Outer Layers of SN 1987A
Supernova 1987A remains the most well-observed and well-studied supernova to
date. Observations produced excellent broad-band photometric and spectroscopic
coverage over a wide wavelength range at all epochs. Here, we focus on the very
early spectroscopic observations. Only recently have numerical models been of
sufficient detail to accurately explain the observed spectra. In SN 1987A, good
agreement has been found between observed and synthetic spectra for day one,
but by day four, the predicted Balmer lines become much weaker than the
observed lines. We present the results of work based on a
radiation-hydrodynamic model by Blinnikov and collaborators. Synthetic non-LTE
spectra generated from this model by the general radiation transfer code
PHOENIX strongly support the theory that significant mixing of nickel into the
outer envelope is required to maintain strong Balmer lines. Preliminary results
suggest a lower limit to the average nickel mass of 1.0 \times 10^{-5} solar
masses is required above 5000 \kmps by day four. PHOENIX models thus have the
potential to be a sensitive probe for nickel mixing in the outer layers of a

Near-infrared line identification in type Ia supernovae during the transitional phase
We present near-infrared synthetic spectra of a delayed-detonation
hydrodynamical model and compare them to observed spectra of four normal type
Ia supernovae ranging from day +56.5 to day +85. This is the epoch during which
supernovae are believed to be undergoing the transition from the photospheric
phase, where spectra are characterized by line scattering above an optically
thick photosphere, to the nebular phase, where spectra consist of optically
thin emission from forbidden lines. We find that most spectral features in the
near-infrared can be accounted for by permitted lines of Fe II and Co II. In
addition, we find that [Ni II] fits the emission feature near 1.98 {\mu}m,
suggesting that a substantial mass of 58Ni exists near the center of the ejecta
in these objects, arising from nuclear burning at high density. A tentative
identification of Mn II at 1.15 {\mu}m may support this conclusion as well.Comment: accepted to Ap
On Silicon Carbide Grains as the Carrier of the 21 Micron Emission Feature in Post-Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars
The mysterious 21mu emission feature seen in 12 proto-planetary nebulae
(PPNe) remains unidentified since its first detection in 1989. Over a dozen of
candidate materials have been proposed within the past decade, but none of them
has received general acceptance. Very recently, silicon carbide (SiC) grains
with impurities were suggested to be the carrier of this enigmatic feature,
based on recent laboratory data that doped SiC grains exhibit a resonance at
\~21mu. This proposal gains strength from the fact that SiC is a common dust
species in carbon-rich circumstellar envelopes. However, SiC dust has a strong
vibrational band at ~11.3mu. We show in this Letter that in order to be
consistent with the observed flux ratios of the 11.3mu feature to the 21mu
feature, the band strength of the 21mu resonance has to be very strong, too
strong to be consistent with current laboratory measurements. But this does not
yet readily rule out the SiC hypothesis since recent experimental results have
demonstrated that the 21mu resonance of doped SiC becomes stronger as the C
impurity increases. Further laboratory measurements of SiC dust with high
fractions of C impurity are urgently needed to test the hypothesis of SiC as

Answering Conjunctive Queries under Updates
We consider the task of enumerating and counting answers to -ary
conjunctive queries against relational databases that may be updated by
inserting or deleting tuples. We exhibit a new notion of q-hierarchical
conjunctive queries and show that these can be maintained efficiently in the
following sense. During a linear time preprocessing phase, we can build a data
structure that enables constant delay enumeration of the query results; and
when the database is updated, we can update the data structure and restart the
enumeration phase within constant time. For the special case of self-join free
conjunctive queries we obtain a dichotomy: if a query is not q-hierarchical,
then query enumeration with sublinear delay and sublinear update time
(and arbitrary preprocessing time) is impossible.
For answering Boolean conjunctive queries and for the more general problem of
counting the number of solutions of k-ary queries we obtain complete
dichotomies: if the query's homomorphic core is q-hierarchical, then size of
the the query result can be computed in linear time and maintained with
constant update time. Otherwise, the size of the query result cannot be
maintained with sublinear update time. All our lower bounds rely on the
OMv-conjecture, a conjecture on the hardness of online matrix-vector
multiplication that has recently emerged in the field of fine-grained
complexity to characterise the hardness of dynamic problems. The lower bound
for the counting problem additionally relies on the orthogonal vectors
conjecture, which in turn is implied by the strong exponential time hypothesis.

A behavioral comparison of male and female adults with high functioning autism spectrum conditions
Autism spectrum conditions (ASC) affect more males than females in the general population. However, within ASC it is unclear if there are phenotypic sex differences. Testing for similarities and differences between the sexes is important not only for clinical assessment but also has implications for theories of typical sex differences and of autism. Using cognitive and behavioral measures, we investigated similarities and differences between the sexes in age- and IQ-matched adults with ASC (high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome). Of the 83 (45 males and 38 females) participants, 62 (33 males and 29 females) met Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) cut-off criteria for autism in childhood and were included in all subsequent analyses. The severity of childhood core autism symptoms did not differ between the sexes. Males and females also did not differ in self-reported empathy, systemizing, anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive traits/symptoms or mentalizing performance. However, adult females with ASC showed more lifetime sensory symptoms (p = 0.036), fewer current socio-communication difficulties (p = 0.001), and more self-reported autistic traits (p = 0.012) than males. In addition, females with ASC who also had developmental language delay had lower current performance IQ than those without developmental language delay (p<0.001), a pattern not seen in males. The absence of typical sex differences in empathizing-systemizing profiles within the autism spectrum confirms a prediction from the extreme male brain theory. Behavioral sex differences within ASC may also reflect different developmental mechanisms between males and females with ASC. We discuss the importance of the superficially better socio-communication ability in adult females with ASC in terms of why females with ASC may more often go under-recognized, and receive their diagnosis later, than males
Bond stretching phonon softening and angle-resolved photoemission kinks in optimally doped Bi2Sr1.6La0.4Cu2O6 superconductors
We report the first measurement of the optical phonon dispersion in optimally
doped single layer Bi2Sr1.6La0.4Cu2O6+delta using inelastic x-ray scattering.
We found a strong softening of the Cu-O bond stretching phonon at about
q=(0.25,0,0) from 76 to 60 meV, similar to the one reported in other cuprates.
A direct comparison with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements
taken on the same sample, revealed an excellent agreement in terms of energy
and momentum between the ARPES nodal kink and the soft part of the bond
stretching phonon. Indeed, we find that the momentum space where a 63 meV kink
is observed can be connected with a vector q=(xi,0,0) with xi~0.22, which
corresponds exactly to the soft part of the bond stretching phonon mode. This
result supports an interpretation of the ARPES kink in terms of electron-phonon

Impaired Competence for Pretense in Children with Autism: Exploring Potential Cognitive Predictors.
Lack of pretense in children with autism has been explained by a number of theoretical explanations, including impaired mentalising, impaired response inhibition, and weak central coherence. This study aimed to empirically test each of these theories. Children with autism (n=60) were significantly impaired relative to controls (n=65) when interpreting pretense, thereby supporting a competence deficit hypothesis. They also showed impaired mentalising and response inhibition, but superior local processing indicating weak central coherence. Regression analyses revealed that mentalising significantly and independently predicted pretense. The results are interpreted as supporting the impaired mentalising theory and evidence against competing theories invoking impaired response inhibition or a local processing bias.
