The 1970s are generally regarded in film history as the New Hollywood Era of American film. In a period of renaissance filmmaking, these films typically focus on men’s trials and tribulations. Many of these films either disregard women all together or label them as the "evil other" to overcome or to sexualize. However, given the rise of the Second Wave Feminist movement, I find the depiction and treatment of women very much at odds with the social context. In my viewings of 1970s films, I discovered that Robert Altman's films hold a certain feminist quality. The purpose of my thesis is to position Altman as a feminist director, specifically terming his mode of feminism as "Altman's Feminism." "Altman's Feminism" consists of treating women as subjects whose presence furthers the narrative story, in addition to depicting them with respect and, at times, sympathy. For my thesis I chose to closely analyze 3 Women (1977) through a feminist-psychoanalytic lens. My thesis closely examines and argues 3 Women as an "Altman Feminist" film, specifically through its comparability to the feminist psychoanalytic film theory that was popular at the time. I discovered that in comparing the film with Laura Mulvey's seminal feminist film essay, "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema," 3 Women, like the essay, explores and condemns patriarchy’s hold on women in society through positioning them as objects. With this reading, 3 Women encapsulates the meaning of "Altman's Feminism" and affirms that there is a film that matches the period's social context. This examination of Altman's films is not only important for viewers searching for a feminist outlet in the New Hollywood Period, but also can be utilized to examine Altman's entire filmography.A one-year embargo was granted for this item.Academic Major: Film Studie

Pedagogy and Culture: An Educational Initiative in Supporting UAE Nursing Graduates Prepare for a High-stakes Nurse Licensing Examination

Graduates of an Abu Dhabi transnational nursing degree struggled with the mandatory national licensing examination. Poor pass rates undermine graduate career futures and impact on the workforce capacity building contributions of the partnering transnational educational providers. This paper describes how the design and delivery of an intensive examination preparation program dramatically reversed this trend. The objectives of this educational initiative involved the design, delivery and evaluation of a program that would align with cultural learning preferences and which improve the success rates of graduates attempting the national nurse licensing examination. To achieve these objectives, the program combined a range of teaching and assessment strategies developed to reflect the specific needs of Arabic learners, build on their existing knowledge and help them engage more effectively in the learning processes required for successful performance in a high stakes examination. Analysis of data collected during program evaluation provides useful insights into the preference and experiences of nursing graduates in the UAE Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The lessons learned are applicable to Arabic learners both regionally and globally

Plant-insect interactions between yellow toadflax, Linaria vulgaris, and a potential biocontrol agent, the gall-forming weevil, Rhinusa pilosa

ix, 168 leaves : ill. (chiefly col.) ; 29 cmYellow toadflax, Linaria vulgaris (L.) Mill. (Plantaginaceae), is a non-native invasive plant. Rhinusa pilosa Germar (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a proposed biocontrol agent. Gall development by R. pilosa was described using histological methods and compared between plant populations from native and introduced ranges. Key stages of oviposition were isolated histologically to determine their importance in gall induction. Rhinusa pilosa galled and developed on four geographically distinct Canadian populations in a pre-release quarantine study. Low agent densities only negatively affected one population. High densities of R. pilosa reduced potential reproductive output and plant biomass. Conducting detailed investigations into the biology, impact, and development of R. pilosa on populations from invasive and native ranges may help predict the efficacy of R. pilosa in the field if approved for release and.goes beyond current pre-release testing requirements

    Iron loading and disease surveillance.

Iron is an oxidant as well as a nutrient for invading microbial and neoplastic cells. Excessive iron in specific tissues and cells (iron loading) promotes development of infection, neoplasia, cardiomyopathy, arthropathy, and various endocrine and possibly neurodegenerative disorders. To contain and detoxify the metal, hosts have evolved an iron withholding defense system, but the system can be compromised by numerous factors. An array of behavioral, medical, and immunologic methods are in place or in development to strengthen iron withholding. Routine screening for iron loading could provide valuable information in epidemiologic, diagnostic, prophylactic, and therapeutic studies of emerging infectious diseases

Neither complementarian nor egalitarian : a kingdom corrective to the evangelical gender debate

    No full text
Regarding gender relations, the evangelical world is divided between complementarians and egalitarians. While both perspectives have much to contribute, the discussion has reached a stalemate. Michelle Lee-Barnewall critiques both sides of the debate, challenging the standard premises and arguments and offering new insight into a perennially divisive issue in the church. She brings fresh biblical exegesis to bear on our cultural situation, presenting an alternative way to move the discussion forward based on a corporate perspective and on kingdom values. The book includes a foreword by Craig L. Blomberg and an afterword by Lynn H. Cohick.https://digitalcommons.biola.edu/faculty-books/1070/thumbnail.jp

Paul, the Stoics, and the Body of Christ

At first glance, Paul\u27s words to the Corinthians about being the body of Christ seem simple and straightforward. He compares them with a human body so that they may be encouraged to work together, each member contributing to the good of the whole according to his or her special gift. However, the passage raises several critical questions which point to its deeper implications. Does Paul mean that the community is \u27like\u27 a body or is he saying that they are in some sense a real body? What is the significance of being specifically the body of Christ? Is the primary purpose of the passage to instruct on the correct use of spiritual gifts or is Paul making a statement about the identity of the Christian community? Michelle Lee examines Paul\u27s instructions in 1 Corinthians 12-14 against the backdrop of Hellenistic moral philosophy, and especially Stoicism.https://digitalcommons.biola.edu/faculty-books/1572/thumbnail.jp

Surprised by the Parables: Growing in Grace through the Stories of Jesus

    No full text
Jesus\u27 parables can\u27t simply be interpreted, they must be experienced. In the gospels, Jesus used parables to teach transformative lessons and convey deep spiritual truths about the kingdom of God. But he often used them to confront and challenge his audience as well, forcing them to open or close their hearts to the kingdom. Jesus understood the power of stories, but there are some things lost in translation when we try to interpret those same stories thousands of years removed from their original context. The unexpected twists and surprises in the parables might be missed by a modern audience because they\u27re unfamiliar with the underlying points of reference. In Surprised by the Parables, Michelle Lee Barnewall explores the ancient context these parables drew from. These stories of grace reveal many of the mysteries central to God\u27s character, and understanding the ancient world behind them will help us see the parables from a new perspective.https://digitalcommons.biola.edu/faculty-books/1523/thumbnail.jp
