    Kaon-Nucleon Scattering Amplitudes and Z∗^*-Enhancements from Quark Born Diagrams

    We derive closed form kaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes using the ``quark Born diagram" formalism, which describes the scattering as a single interaction (here the OGE spin-spin term) followed by quark line rearrangement. The low energy I=0 and I=1 S-wave KN phase shifts are in reasonably good agreement with experiment given conventional quark model parameters. For klab>0.7k_{lab}> 0.7 Gev however the I=1 elastic phase shift is larger than predicted by Gaussian wavefunctions, and we suggest possible reasons for this discrepancy. Equivalent low energy KN potentials for S-wave scattering are also derived. Finally we consider OGE forces in the related channels KΔ\Delta, K∗^*N and K∗Δ^*\Delta, and determine which have attractive interactions and might therefore exhibit strong threshold enhancements or ``Z∗^*-molecule" meson-baryon bound states. We find that the minimum-spin, minimum-isospin channels and two additional K∗Δ^*\Delta channels are most conducive to the formation of bound states.     Confirmation of a pi_1^0 Exotic Meson in the \eta \pi^0 System

    The exclusive reaction π−p→ηπ0n\pi^- p \to \eta \pi^0 n, η→π+π−π0\eta \to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0 at 18 GeV/c/c has been studied with a partial wave analysis on a sample of 23~492 ηπ0n\eta \pi^0 n events from BNL experiment E852. A mass-dependent fit is consistent with a resonant hypothesis for the P+P_+ wave, thus providing evidence for a neutral exotic meson with JPC=1−+J^{PC} = 1^{-+}, a mass of 1257±20±251257 \pm 20 \pm 25 MeV/c2/c^2, and a width of 354±64±60354 \pm 64 \pm 60 MeV/c2/c^2. New interpretations of the meson exotics in neutral ηπ0\eta \pi^0 system observed in E852 and Crystal Barrel experiments are discussed.Comment: p3, rewording the paragraph (at the bottom) about the phase variations. p4, rewording paragrath "The second method ..." . p4, at the bottom of paragrath "The third method ..." added consistent with the results of methods 1 and 2

    I=3/2 KÏ€K \pi Scattering in the Nonrelativisitic Quark Potential Model

    We study I=3/2I=3/2 elastic KÏ€K\pi scattering to Born order using nonrelativistic quark wavefunctions in a constituent-exchange model. This channel is ideal for the study of nonresonant meson-meson scattering amplitudes since s-channel resonances do not contribute significantly. Standard quark model parameters yield good agreement with the measured S- and P-wave phase shifts and with PCAC calculations of the scattering length. The P-wave phase shift is especially interesting because it is nonzero solely due to SU(3)fSU(3)_f symmetry breaking effects, and is found to be in good agreement with experiment given conventional values for the strange and nonstrange constituent quark masses.Comment: 12 pages + 2 postscript figures, Revtex, MIT-CTP-210

    The discontinuous nature of chromospheric activity evolution

    Chromospheric activity has been thought to decay smoothly with time and, hence, to be a viable age indicator.     Exotic Meson Production in the f1(1285)π−f_{1}(1285)\pi^{-} System observed in the Reaction π−p→ηπ+π−π−p\pi^{-} p \to \eta\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{-} p at 18 GeV/c

    This letter reports results from the partial wave analysis of the π−π−π+η\pi^{-}\pi^{-}\pi^{+}\eta final state in π−p\pi^{-}p collisions at 18GeV/c. Strong evidence is observed for production of two mesons with exotic quantum numbers of spin, parity and charge conjugation, JPC=1−+J^{PC} = 1^{-+} in the decay channel f1(1285)π−f_{1}(1285)\pi^{-}. The mass M=1709±24±41M = 1709 \pm 24 \pm 41 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=403±80±115\Gamma = 403 \pm 80 \pm 115 MeV/c^2 of the first state are consistent with the parameters of the previously observed π1(1600)\pi_{1}(1600). The second resonance with mass M=2001±30±92M = 2001 \pm 30 \pm 92 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=333±52±49\Gamma = 333 \pm 52 \pm 49 MeV/c^2 agrees very well with predictions from theoretical models. In addition, the presence of π2(1900)\pi_{2}(1900) is confirmed with mass M=2003±88±148M = 2003 \pm 88 \pm 148 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=306±132±121\Gamma = 306 \pm 132 \pm 121 MeV/c^2 and a new state, a1(2096)a_{1}(2096), is observed with mass M=2096±17±121M = 2096 \pm 17 \pm 121 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=451±41±81\Gamma = 451 \pm 41 \pm 81 MeV/c^2. The decay properties of these last two states are consistent with flux tube model predictions for hybrid mesons with non-exotic quantum numbers

    Thermodynamic Properties of the Dimerised and Frustrated S=1/2 Chain

    By high temperature series expansion, exact diagonalisation and temperature density-matrix renormalisation the magnetic susceptibility χ(T)\chi(T) and the specific heat C(T)C(T) of dimerised and frustrated S=1/2S=1/2 chains are computed. All three methods yield reliable results, in particular for not too small temperatures or not too small gaps. The series expansion results are provided in the form of polynomials allowing very fast and convenient fits in data analysis using algebraic programmes. We discuss the difficulty to extract more than two coupling constants from the temperature dependence of χ(T)\chi(T).Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 4 table

    Thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet coupled to bond phonons

    By applying a quantum Monte Carlo procedure based on the loop algorithm we investigate thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg model coupled to Einstein phonons on the bonds. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, mean phonon occupation numbers and the specific heat are discussed in detail. We study the spin correlation function both in the regime of weak and strong spin phonon coupling (coupling constants g=0.1, w=8J and g=2, w=2J, respectively). A finite size scaling analysis of the correlation length indicates that in both cases long range Neel order is established in the ground state.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figure

    Innovations in air sampling to detect plant pathogens

    Many innovations in the development and use of air sampling devices have occurred in plant pathology since the first description of the Hirst spore trap. These include improvements in capture efficiency at relatively high air-volume collection rates, methods to enhance the ease of sample processing with downstream diagnostic methods and even full automation of sampling, diagnosis and wireless reporting of results. Other innovations have been to mount air samplers on mobile platforms such as UAVs and ground vehicles to allow sampling at different altitudes and locations in a short space of time to identify potential sources and population structure. Geographical Information Systems and the application to a network of samplers can allow a greater prediction of airborne inoculum and dispersal dynamics. This field of technology is now developing quickly as novel diagnostic methods allow increasingly rapid and accurate quantifications of airborne species and genetic traits. Sampling and interpretation of results, particularly action-thresholds, is improved by understanding components of air dispersal and dilution processes and can add greater precision in the application of crop protection products as part of integrated pest and disease management decisions. The applications of air samplers are likely to increase, with much greater adoption by growers or industry support workers to aid in crop protection decisions. The same devices are likely to improve information available for detection of allergens causing hay fever and asthma or provide valuable metadata for regional plant disease dynamics

    The social construction of male infertility: a qualitative questionnaire study of men with a male factor infertility diagnosis

    Although recent research has highlighted the distressing impact of infertility for men, fertility issues are still routinely seen as a 'women's issue' - even when male factor infertility is highlighted. This article reports findings from a qualitative questionnaire study focusing on a sample of men with a male factor infertility diagnosis; an under-researched and marginalised group in the context of reproductive medicine. Our analysis suggests that male factor infertility is viewed by men as a failure of masculinity, as stigmatising and silencing, and as an isolating and traumatic experience. It is also clear that these themes are shaped by wider societal discourses which present men as (unproblematically) fertile, uninvested in parenthood and stoic in their approach to emotional distress. Such norms also ensure that reproduction continues to be presented as a 'women's issue' which burdens women and marginalises men. In understanding male factor infertility experiences, the damaging nature of the social construction of male fertility is then more clearly illuminated

    Shear-banding in a lyotropic lamellar phase, Part 1: Time-averaged velocity profiles

    Using velocity profile measurements based on dynamic light scattering and coupled to structural and rheological measurements in a Couette cell, we present evidences for a shear-banding scenario in the shear flow of the onion texture of a lyotropic lamellar phase. Time-averaged measurements clearly show the presence of structural shear-banding in the vicinity of a shear-induced transition, associated to the nucleation and growth of a highly sheared band in the flow. Our experiments also reveal the presence of slip at the walls of the Couette cell. Using a simple mechanical approach, we demonstrate that our data confirms the classical assumption of the shear-banding picture, in which the interface between bands lies at a given stress σ⋆\sigma^\star.
