Creating ultracold molecules by collisions with ultracold rare gas atoms in an optical trap

We study collisions of para-H2_2 with five rare gas atomic species (He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe) over the range from 1 K to 1 μ\mu K and evaluate the feasibility of sympathetic cooling H2_2 with ultracold ground state rare gas atoms co-trapped within a deep optical trap. Collision cross-sections over this large temperature range show that all of these species could be used to cool H2_2 to ultracold temperatures and that argon and helium are the most promising species for future experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, 1 table, submitted for publicatio

Stress ulcer prophylaxis in trauma patients

INTRODUCTION: A number of issues concerning stress ulcer prophylaxis remain unresolved despite numerous randomized, controlled trials and several meta-analyses. The role of stress ulcer prophylaxis, particularly in trauma patients, is further complicated by the lack of trials utilizing clinically important bleeding as an endpoint. Given the lack of consensus regarding stress ulcer prophylaxis in trauma patients, prescribing practices at Level I trauma centers in the United States were assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey was developed that contained questions related to institutional prescribing and evaluation of stress ulcer prophylaxis. The survey was intended to delineate these practices at the 188 Level I trauma centers (at the time of the present survey) in the United States. RESULTS: One hundred and nineteen surveys were returned, yielding a response rate of 63%. Eighty-six percent stated that medications for stress ulcer prophylaxis are used in a vast majority of trauma patients admitted to the intensive care unit. Sixty-five percent stated that there is one preferred medication. For these institutions, histamine-2-blockers were the most popular at 71%. Thirty-nine percent stated that greater than 50% of patients remain on stress ulcer prophylaxis following discharge from the intensive care unit. CONCLUSION: The lack of consensus with regards to appropriate stress ulcer prophylaxis is apparent in this survey of Level I trauma centers. For those institutions with a preferred agent, histamine-2-blockers were most common

Hot filament chemical vapour deposition and wear resistance of diamond films on WC-Co substrates coated using PVD-arc deposition technique

Different Cr- and Ti-base films were deposited using PVD-arc deposition onto WC-Co substrates, and multilayered coatings were obtained from the superimposition of diamond coatings, deposited on the PVD interlayer using hot filament chemical vapour deposition (HFCVD). The behaviour of PVD-arc deposited CrN and CrC interlayers between diamond and WC-Co substrates was studied and compared to TiN, TiC, and Ti(C,N) interlayers. Tribological tests with alternative sliding motion were carried out to check the multilayer (PVD+ diamond) film adhesion on WC-Co substrate. Multilayer films obtained using PVD arc, characterised by large surface droplets, demonstrated good wear resistance, while diamond deposited on smooth PVD TiN films was not adherent. Multilayered Ti(C,N)+diamond film samples generally showed poor wear resistance. Diamond adhesion on Cr-based PVD coatings deposited on WC-Co substrate was good. In particular, CrN interlayers improved diamond film properties and 6 gm-thick diamond films deposited on CrN showed excellent wear behaviour characterised by the absence of measurable wear volume after sling tests. Good diamond adhesion on Cr-based PVD films has been attributed to chromium carbide formation on PVD film surfaces during the CVD process. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

The helium trimer with soft-core potentials

The helium trimer is studied using two- and three-body soft-core potentials. Realistic helium-helium potentials present an extremely strong short-range repulsion and support a single, very shallow, bound state. The description of systems with more than two helium atoms is difficult due to the very large cancellation between kinetic and potential energy. We analyze the possibility of describing the three helium system in the ultracold regime using a gaussian representation of a widely used realistic potential, the LM2M2 interaction. However, in order to describe correctly the trimer ground state a three-body force has to be added to the gaussian interaction. With this potential model the two bound states of the trimer and the low energy scattering helium-dimer phase shifts obtained with the LM2M2 potential are well reproduced.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Few-Body System

Wood-Reinforced Polyphthalamide Resins: MultiFunctional Composite Coating for Metal Substrates

Protective layers were deposited on aluminum substrates by dipping them inside a fluidized bed (FB) of wood and polyphthalamide powders. The experimental investigation looked into the influence of the main process parameters (number and composition of superimposed layers, heating temperature, and dipping time) on the visual appearance, scratch adhesion, wear resistance, and thermal insulation of the resulting coatings. Micromechanical and tribological responses of the coatings were significantly improved by the effect of the wooden particles dispersed inside the polyphthalamide binder. An improvement of the thermal insulation was also achieved whatever the setting of the process parameters. Further, the coatings displayed good adhesion to the substrate and wear endurance
