    Future of Public Parks: Policy, Practice and Research

    On Thursday 13th July 2017, the University of Leeds hosted a major one-day national conference entitled ‘The Future of Public Parks’ at The British Academy in London. The conference was generously sponsored by the Leeds Social Sciences Institute and idverde, with support from The Parks Alliance, Historic England and Groundwork. Some 79 delegates participated in a lively and engaging event which drew together innovative thinking and learning from policy, practice and research on ways to maximise the value of parks as public assets in the twenty-first century, and to consider challenges that threaten the sustainability of public parks in the future. The event brought together academics from diverse disciplines, funding bodies, policy-makers and practitioners from the across the public, voluntary and private sectors. At a time when the future of public parks is both in the balance and in the national spotlight, the presenters and delegates explored important issues and challenges that inform diverse models of park management whether local authorities, trusts, charities or private sector. These included questions about health and well-being, social and educational use, community involvement and strategies for generating income. The conference provided a timely opportunity to foster a research-informed, policy and practice-orientated dialogue about park futures and offered a platform for advancing public debate in light of the findings and recommendations of the Communities and Local Government Select Committee Inquiry. Importantly, it provided a unique opportunity for multi-disciplinary, inter-professional and cross-sectoral debate that enabled delegates to explore common questions, mutual strategies and shared interest in promoting the social role and value of public parks

    Spaces Apart: Public Parks and the Differentiation of Space in Leeds, 1850-1914

    While the Victorian ideal of the public park is well understood, we know less of how local governors sought to realize this ideal in practice. This article is concerned with park-making as a process – contingent, unstable, open – rather than with parks as outcomes – determined, settled, closed. It details how local governors bounded, designed and regulated park spaces to differentiate them as ‘spaces apart’ within the city, and how this programme of spatial governance was obstructed, frustrated and diverted by political, environmental and social forces. The article also uses this historical analysis to provide a new perspective on the future prospects of urban parks today

    Lipid droplet remodelling and reduced muscle ceramides following sprint interval and moderate-intensity continuous exercise training in obese males.

    BACKGROUND: In obesity, improved muscle insulin sensitivity following exercise training has been linked to the lowering of diacylglycerol (DAG) and ceramide concentrations. Little is known, however, about how improved insulin action with exercise training in obese individuals relates to lipid droplet (LD) adaptations in skeletal muscle. In this study we investigated the hypothesis that short-term sprint interval training (SIT) and moderate intensity continuous training (MICT) in obese individuals would increase perilipin (PLIN) expression, increase the proportion of LDs in contact with mitochondria and reduce muscle concentrations of DAGs and ceramides. METHODS: Sixteen sedentary obese males performed 4 weeks of either SIT (4-7 × 30 s sprints at 200% Wmax, 3 days.week(-1)) or MICT (40-60 min cycling at ~65% VO2peak, 5 days.week(-1)), and muscle biopsies were obtained pre- and post-training. RESULTS: Training increased PLIN2 (SIT 90%, MICT 68%) and PLIN5 (SIT 47%, MICT 34%) expression in type I fibres only, and increased PLIN3 expression in both type I (SIT 63%, MICT 67%) and type II fibres (SIT 70%, MICT 160%) (all P<0.05). Training did not change LD content but increased the proportion of LD in contact with mitochondria (SIT 12%, MICT 21%, P<0.01). Ceramides were reduced following training (SIT -10%, MICT -7%, P<0.05), but DAG was unchanged. No training × group interactions were observed for any variables. CONCLUSIONS: These results confirm the hypothesis that SIT and MICT results in remodelling of LDs and lowers ceramide concentrations in skeletal muscle of sedentary obese males.International Journal of Obesity accepted article preview online, 24 July 2017. doi:10.1038/ijo.2017.170

    Reverse Myocardial Remodeling Following Valve Repair in Patients With Chronic Severe Primary Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation

    OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to quantify preoperative myocardial fibrosis using late gadolinium enhancement (LGE), extracellular volume fraction (ECV%), and indexed extracellular volume (iECV) on cardiac magnetic resonance; determine whether this varies following surgery; and examine the impact on postoperative outcomes. BACKGROUND: Myocardial fibrosis complicates chronic severe primary mitral regurgitation and is associated with left ventricular dilatation and dysfunction. It is not known if this nonischemic fibrosis is reversible following surgery or if it affects ventricular remodeling and patient outcomes. METHODS: A multicenter prospective study was conducted among 104 subjects with primary mitral regurgitation undergoing mitral valve repair. Cardiac magnetic resonance and cardiopulmonary exercise stress testing were performed preoperatively and ≥6 months after surgery. Symptoms were assessed using the Minnesota Living With Heart Failure Questionnaire. RESULTS: Mitral valve repair was performed for Class 2a indications in 65 patients and Class 1 indications in 39 patients. Ninety-three patients were followed up at 8.8 months (interquartile range: 7.4 months-10.6 months). Following surgery, there were significant reductions in both ECV% (from 27.4% to 26.6%; P = 0.027) and iECV (from 17.9 to 15.4 mL/m2; P < 0.001), but the incidence of LGE was unchanged. Neither preoperative ECV% nor LGE affected postoperative function, but iECV predicted left ventricular end-systolic volume index (β = 1.04; 95% CI: 0.49 to 1.58; P < 0.001) and left ventricular ejection fraction (β = -0.61; 95% CI: -1.05 to -0.18; P = 0.006). Patients with above-median iECV of ≥17.6 mL/m2 had significantly larger postoperative values of left ventricular end-systolic volume index (30.5 ± 12.7 mL/m2 vs 23.9 ± 8.0 mL/m2; P = 0.003), an association that remained significant in subcohort analyses of patients in New York Heart Association functional class I. CONCLUSIONS: Mitral valve surgery results in reductions in ECV% and iECV, which are surrogates of diffuse myocardial fibrosis, and preoperative iECV predicts the degree of postoperative remodeling irrespective of symptoms.     Assessing connectivity between an overlying aquifer and a coal seam gas resource using methane isotopes, dissolved organic carbon and tritium

    Coal seam gas (CSG) production can have an impact on groundwater quality and quantity in adjacent or overlying aquifers. To assess this impact we need to determine the background groundwater chemistry and to map geological pathways of hydraulic connectivity between aquifers. In south-east Queensland (Qld), Australia, a globally important CSG exploration and production province, we mapped hydraulic connectivity between the Walloon Coal Measures (WCM, the target formation for gas production) and the overlying Condamine River Alluvial Aquifer (CRAA), using groundwater methane (CH4) concentration and isotopic composition (δ13C-CH4), groundwater tritium (3H) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration. A continuous mobile CH4 survey adjacent to CSG developments was used to determine the source signature of CH4 derived from the WCM. Trends in groundwater δ13C-CH4 versus CH4 concentration, in association with DOC concentration and 3H analysis, identify locations where CH4 in the groundwater of the CRAA most likely originates from the WCM. The methodology is widely applicable in unconventional gas development regions worldwide for providing an early indicator of geological pathways of hydraulic connectivity

    Nanoscale temperature measurements using non-equilibrium Brownian dynamics of a levitated nanosphere

    Einstein realised that the fluctuations of a Brownian particle can be used to ascertain properties of its environment. A large number of experiments have since exploited the Brownian motion of colloidal particles for studies of dissipative processes, providing insight into soft matter physics, and leading to applications from energy harvesting to medical imaging. Here we use optically levitated nanospheres that are heated to investigate the non-equilibrium properties of the gas surrounding them. Analysing the sphere's Brownian motion allows us to determine the temperature of the centre-of-mass motion of the sphere, its surface temperature and the heated gas temperature in two spatial dimensions. We observe asymmetric heating of the sphere and gas, with temperatures reaching the melting point of the material.     Scaling of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction with magnetization in Pt/Co(Fe)B/Ir multilayers

    Magnetic multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy and an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) contain chiral domain walls and skyrmions that are promising for applications. Here, we measure the temperature dependence of the DMI in Pt/CoFeB/Ir and Pt/CoB/Ir multilayers by means of static domain imaging. First, the temperature dependences of saturation magnetization (Ms), exchange stiffness (A), and intrinsic perpendicular anisotropy (Ku) are determined. Then the demagnetized domain pattern in each multilayer is imaged by wide-field Kerr microscopy in the temperature range 9–290 K, and the characteristic domain period at each temperature is determined. We calculate the DMI constant D from an analytical expression for the domain wall energy density that treats the multilayer as a uniform medium. Scaling laws for Ku and D with the magnetization are established from the experiments. While the scaling of Ku is consistent with Callen-Callen theory, we find that the scaling of D is like that of A predicted theoretically (∼1.8)

    Thy-1 Attenuates TNF-α-Activated Gene Expression in Mouse Embryonic Fibroblasts via Src Family Kinase

    Heterogeneous surface expression of Thy-1 in fibroblasts modulates inflammation and may thereby modulate injury and repair. As a paradigm, patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a disease with pathologic features of chronic inflammation, demonstrate an absence of Thy-1 immunoreactivity within areas of fibrotic activity (fibroblast foci) in contrast to the predominant Thy-1 expressing fibroblasts in the normal lung. Likewise, Thy-1 deficient mice display more severe lung fibrosis in response to an inflammatory injury than wildtype littermates. We investigated the role of Thy-1 in the response of fibroblasts to the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α. Our study demonstrates distinct profiles of TNF-α-activated gene expression in Thy-1 positive (Thy-1+) and negative (Thy-1−) subsets of mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEF). TNF-α induced a robust activation of MMP-9, ICAM-1, and the IL-8 promoter driven reporter in Thy-1− MEFs, in contrast to only a modest increase in Thy-1+ counterparts. Consistently, ectopic expression of Thy-1 in Thy-1− MEFs significantly attenuated TNF-α-activated gene expression. Mechanistically, TNF-α activated Src family kinase (SFK) only in Thy-1− MEFs. Blockade of SFK activation abrogated TNF-α-activated gene expression in Thy-1− MEFs, whereas restoration of SFK activation rescued the TNF-α response in Thy-1+ MEFs. Our findings suggest that Thy-1 down-regulates TNF-α-activated gene expression via interfering with SFK- and NF-κB-mediated transactivation.     Influence of low birth weight on C-reactive protein in asymptomatic younger adults: the bogalusa heart study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Both low birth weight, an indicator of intrauterine growth restriction, and low grade systemic inflammation depicted by high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) have emerged as independent predictors of cardiovascular (CV) disease and type 2 diabetes. However, information linking low birth weight and hs-CRP in a biracial (black/white) population is scant. We assessed a cohort of 776 black and white subjects (28% black, 43% male) aged 24-43 years (mean 36.1 years) enrolled in the Bogalusa Heart Study with regard to birth weight and gestational age data were retrieved from Louisiana State Public Health Office.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Black subjects had significantly lower birth weight than white subjects (3.145 kg vs 3.441 kg, p < 0.0001) and higher hs-CRP level (3.29 mg/L vs 2.57 mg/L, p = 0.011). After adjusting for sex, age, body mass index (BMI), smoking status and race (for total sample), the hs-CRP level decreased across quartiles of increasing birth weight in white subjects (p = 0.001) and the combined sample (p = 0.002). Adjusting for sex, age, BMI, smoking status and race for the total sample in a multivariate regression model, low birth weight was retained as an independent predictor variable for higher hs-CRP levels in white subjects (p = 0.004) and the total sample (p = 0.007). Conversely, the area under the receiver operative curve (c statistic) analysis adjusted for race, sex, age, smoking status and BMI yielded a value of 0.777 with regard to the discriminating value of hs-CRP for predicting low birth weight.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The deleterious effect of low birth weight on systemic inflammation depicted by the hs-CRP levels in asymptomatic younger adults may potentially link fetal growth retardation, CV disease and diabetes, with important health implications.</p

    Spatial heterogeneity of habitat suitability for Rift Valley fever occurrence in Tanzania: an ecological niche modelling approach

    Despite the long history of Rift Valley fever (RVF) in Tanzania, extent of its suitable habitat in the country remains unclear. In this study we investigated potential effects of temperature, precipitation, elevation, soil type, livestock density, rainfall pattern, proximity to wild animals, protected areas and forest on the habitat suitability for RVF occurrence in Tanzania. Presence-only records of 193 RVF outbreak locations from 1930 to 2007 together with potential predictor variables were used to model and map the suitable habitats for RVF occurrence using ecological niche modelling. Ground-truthing of the model outputs was conducted by comparing the levels of RVF virus specific antibodies in cattle, sheep and goats sampled from locations in Tanzania that presented different predicted habitat suitability values. Habitat suitability values for RVF occurrence were higher in the northern and central-eastern regions of Tanzania than the rest of the regions in the country. Soil type and precipitation of the wettest quarter contributed equally to habitat suitability (32.4% each), followed by livestock density (25.9%) and rainfall pattern (9.3%). Ground-truthing of model outputs revealed that the odds of an animal being seropositive for RVFV when sampled from areas predicted to be most suitable for RVF occurrence were twice the odds of an animal sampled from areas least suitable for RVF occurrence (95% CI: 1.43, 2.76, p < 0.001). The regions in the northern and central-eastern Tanzania were more suitable for RVF occurrence than the rest of the regions in the country. The modelled suitable habitat is characterised by impermeable soils, moderate precipitation in the wettest quarter, high livestock density and a bimodal rainfall pattern. The findings of this study should provide guidance for the design of appropriate RVF surveillance, prevention and control strategies which target areas with these characteristics
