The potential role of socio-hydrological models for participatory water governance in Burkina Faso

Halting and reversing water quality degradation is a major global concern. The variety of needs and priorities placed on water resources make the issue of water pollution multifaceted and complex. Addressing water quality management requires an approach that can tackle the diversity of requirements and concerns to achieve effective strategies. In Burkina Faso, stakeholder participation plays an important role in effective catchment management. The Participatory Water Governance Project in Rural Burkina Faso has developed support strategies to strengthen the capacity of local-level Water User Committees. Research conducted by TU Wien (Technical University Vienna) and International Water Management Institute (IWMI) aims to support the project by exploring the potential role of socio-hydrological models in water management decision making. The areas around the River Kou and Bapla Reservoir were the focus for this part of the study. The specific question addressed by TU Wien was: can a socio-hydrological model be developed that accurately captures the relationships between people and water quality in the study area

Determinants of species richness patterns in the Netherlands across multiple taxonomic groups

We examined the species richness patterns of five different species groups (mosses, reptiles and amphibians, grasshoppers and crickets, dragonflies, and hoverflies) in the Netherlands (41,500 km2) using sampling units of 5 × 5 km. We compared the spatial patterns of species richness of the five groups using Spearman¿s rank correlation and used a stepwise multiple regression generalized linear modelling (GLM) approach to assess their relation with a set of 36 environmental variables, selected because they can be related to the several hypotheses on biodiversity patterns. Species richness patterns of the five groups were to a certain extent congruent. Our data suggest that environmental heterogeneity (in particular habitat heterogeneity) is one of the major determinants of variation in species richness within these five groups. We found that for taxonomic groups comprising a low number of species, our regression model explained more of the variability in species richness than for taxonomic groups with a large number of specie

Het ideale gerecht voor de mensen

In dit artikel gaat het er om hoe de rechtspraak dichter bij de klant zou kunnen komen, door meer gegevens te verzamelen over wat mensen voor rechtspraak nodig hebben. Deze gegevens kunnen worden geconfronteerd met de ¿aanbodkant¿. Wat willen rechters aan hun klanten bieden? De Jaarvergadering van de Raad voor de Rechtspraak van 2004 bood een unieke gelegeheid om te meten in hoeverre rechters zich door gegevens over de wensen van hun klanten willen laten leiden. Wat zijn de meest opvallende uitkomsten? Wat mij betreft is verrassend dat de rechterlijke macht zich zo duidelijk verantwoordelijk lijkt te voelen voor meer dan alleen het behandelen van de zaken die daadwerkelijk op de griffie binnenkomen conform het geldende procesrecht. Bijna niemand vindt dat de gestelde vragen bij de Minister, de wetgever of wie dan ook anders thuishoren. Ook lijkt men sterker bereid om de eigen werkwijze aan te passen op basis van de wensen en behoeften van partijen in geschillen en bij strafoplegging dan ik had vermoed. Verder lijkt er sprake van een gezonde diversiteit aan opvattingen en prioriteiten voor de verdere ontwikkeling van rechtspraak. Er is veel om aan te werken, om mee te experimenteren, en in ieder geval genoeg aanleiding om met elkaar over ideale rechtspraak te praten.
