Da feitiçaria como estética ritual nas religiões de matriz africana

This article returns to part of the ethnographic data relating to witchcraft to whichI devoted a chapter of my doctoral dissertation – a description of three houses of religion of African origin located in southern Rio Grande do Sul. My goal here is to demonstrate that spirits, despite invisible, have a significant material side. Because of this the ritual assemblage of these beings presupposes a delicate craftsmanship, which includes specific ways of combining and separating certain foods and cooking ingredients, but also the careful use of certain objects, places and words. This isthe case of the ritual creation involved in witchcraft, the main object for this article. To understand it we need to describe part of what happens during the initiation rite. The main hypothesis is that ritual creation is the expression of a transformational relation between different rites.Este artigo retoma uma parte dos materiais etnográficos relativos à feitiçaria aos quais dediquei um capítulo de minha tese de doutorado, consagrada à descrição de três casas de religião de matriz africana, todas situadas no sul do Rio Grande do Sul. Meu objetivo é demonstrar que os espíritos, não obstante invisíveis, dispõem de um significativo lado material, de tal maneira que o agenciamento ritual desses seres supõe um delicadíssimo trabalho artesanal, o qual inclui maneiras específicas de aproximar e separar determinados alimentos e ingredientes culinários, mas também o uso cuidadoso de certos objetos, lugares e palavras. Esse é o caso da criação ritual implicada na feitiçaria, objeto privilegiado por este artigo, mas cuja compreensão parece exigir a descrição de uma parte do que acontece durante o rito de iniciação. Eis, portanto, sua hipótese de fundo: a criação ritual é a expressão de uma relação de transformação entre diferentes ritos

A maldição da tolerância e a arte do respeito nos encontros de saberes - 2a. Parte

Based on an analytical elaboration of the notion of respect, as it is formulated in African American religions and other afroindigenous groups, this article seeks to display the centrality of this notion in the practices linked to these traditions and, from that point onwards, to connect this notion with the practice of anthropology itself. Through a careful juxtaposition between philosophers, writers, indigenous, afroindigenous, Quilombola and Afro-Brazilian thinkers, we speculate about the possibility of a more respectful relationship with other practices of knowledge. A relationship that would be capable of contributing to the renewal of our own practices of knowledge. In this sense, the experience of the so-called “Encounters of Knowledges” works as a context from which we set out to think about these issues in order to establish a transversal relationship with the practices with which we seek to dialogue. A relationship defined by the most absolute respect for the frontiers that we have to cross in order to establish this dialogue, as well as by the shame against any possibility of assimilating or destroying that what we intend to establish a relationship with.A partir de uma retomada analítica da noção de respeito tal qual aparece principalmente nas religiões de matriz africana e em outros coletivos afroindígenas, este artigo pretende mostrar não apenas a centralidade dessa noção para as práticas vinculadas a essas tradições, como, a partir daí, conectar a noção com a própria prática da antropologia. Por meio de uma cuidadosa justaposição entre filósofos, escritores, pensadores indígenas, afroindígenas, quilombolas e afro-brasileiros, especula-se, assim, a possibilidade de uma relação mais respeitosa com outras práticas de conhecimento, capaz de contribuir para uma renovação das nossas. A experiência dos chamados encontros de saberes funciona, nesse sentido, como um meio a partir do que se tenta pensar essas questões de modo a estabelecer uma relação transversal com as práticas com as quais se busca dialogar. Ou seja, uma relação definida pelo mais absoluto respeito diante das fronteiras que temos que cruzar para estabelecer esse diálogo, e pela vergonha diante de qualquer possibilidade de assimilar ou destruir aquilo com o que se pretende estabelecer uma relação

Sylvia Caiuby Novaes é professora do Departamento de Antropologia da Universidade de São Paulo (USP) e dedica-se há cerca de 50 anos à pesquisa e ao ensino em antropologia. Entre outras realizações, ela é uma das pioneiras da antropologia visual no Brasil, é fundadora do Laboratório de Imagem e Som da Antropologia (LISA) e editora responsável pela revista Gesto, Imagem e Som. Revista de Antropologia (GIS). Nesta entrevista, realizada por mais de 30 orientandos de diferentes gerações, Sylvia fala sobre sua trajetória, projetos, visão de mundo, suas diversas viagens, o fascínio pelas pesquisas de campo e a universidade.
