Labor productivity and natural resources: an assessment at the national level in Honduras
The study establishes the link between agricultural labor productivity and natural resources variables at the national level in Honduras. We show through spatial analysis of productivity and natural resources that the relationship between natural resource conditions and agricultural productivity is not as direct as one can imagine. Length of the rain)" season has a strong and quasi linear relation with income. Soil has little impact on productivity as well as slope and altitude since coffee production in the mountain has a strong relation on productivity. Access to the main cities and to the main seaports has little relation with productivity since some of the main cities are located in unproductive areas. Improving the small road network would have a more positive impact. The study suggests that good research and good policies can have a good impact on productivity

Modelling the effect of carbon on deformation behaviour of twinning induced plasticity steels
In this article, a physical model describing the deformation behaviour of Twinning Induced Plasticity(TWIP) steels has been extended to include the effect of carbon content. The experimental validation and the analysis show that carbon mainly controls the maximum number of dislocations piled up at the twin boundary, resulting in the increase of back-stresses (i.e. kinematic hardening) and therefore the work hardening rate. This explanation seems to be in agreement with recent TEM observations. © The Author(s) 2011. Applications of the Quon Algebra: 3-D Harmonic Oscillator and the Rotor Model
In this work we present a method to build in a systematic way a many-body
quon basis state. In particular, we show a closed expression for a given number
N of quons, restricted to the permutational symmetric subspace, which belongs
to the whole quonic space. The method is applied to two simple problems: the
three-dimensional harmonic oscillator and the rotor model and compared to
previous quantum algebra results. The differences obtained and possible future
applications are also discussed.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure
Common peroneal nerve palsy complicating knee dislocation and bicruciate ligaments tears
SummaryIntroductionThe occurrence rate of common peroneal nerve (CPN) palsy associated with knee dislocation or bicruciate ligament injury ranges from 10 to 40%. The present study sought first to describe the anatomic lesions encountered and their associated prognoses and second to recommend adequate treatment strategy based on a prospective multicenter observational series of knee ligament trauma cases.Material and methodsTwelve out of 67 knees treated for dislocation or bicruciate lesion presented associated CPN palsy: two females, 10 males; mean age, 32 years. Four sports injuries, three traffic accidents and five other etiologies led to seven complete dislocations and five bicruciate ruptures. Four cases involved associated popliteal artery laceration ischemia; one of the dislocations was open. Paralysis was total in eight cases and partial in four. There were two complete ruptures, three contusions with CPN in continuity stretch lesions and three macroscopically normal aspects.ResultsAt a minimum 1 year's follow-up, regardless of the initial surgical technique performed, recovery was complete in six cases, partial (in terms of motor function) in one and absent in five. Without specific CPN surgery, spontaneous recovery was partial in one case, complete in two and absent in none. Following simple emergency or secondary neurolysis, remission was total in four cases and absent in one. Three nerve grafts were all associated with non-recovery.DiscussionThe present results agree with literature findings. Palsy rates varied with trauma circumstances and departmental recruitment. Neurologic impairment was commensurate to ligamentary damages. The anatomic status of the CPN, subjected to violent traction by dislocation, was the most significant prognostic factor for neurologic recovery. In about 25% of dislocations, contusion-elongation over several centimeters was associated with as poor a prognosis as total rupture. CPN neurolysis is recommended when early clinical and EMG recovery fails to progress and/or in case of lateral ligamentary reconstruction. Possible peripheral nerve impairment needs to be included in the overall functional assessment of treatment for severe ligaments injuries and knee dislocation.Level of evidenceLevel IV, prospective study

Blame it on the goats? Desertification in the Near East during the Holocene
The degree to which desertification during the Holocene resulted from climatic deterioration or alternatively from overgrazing has puzzled Quaternary scientists in many arid regions of the world. In the research reported upon here, a multi-disciplinary investigation of a 5-m deep, ~11,000-year-old sediment column excavated in a dry lake bed in southern Jordan revealed an early interval in which proxies of plant cover and sheep/goat stocking rates co-varied directly with climatic cycles. Beginning ~5.6 kcal BP, however, this pattern changed with fecal spherulite and phytolith densities failing to co-vary and with spherulites often greatly exceeding phytolith densities, which we suggest is indicative of overgrazing. Moreover, the lack of agreement between the high phytolith densities and other indicators of a desert landscape (i.e. geomorphic and palynologic) suggests that phytolith densities were inflated by fodder subsidies and as such are not entirely reflective of plant cover for this later interval. Given the co-incidental emergence of overgrazing with archaeological evidence for a marked rise in regional population, emergence of widespread trade, and expansion of the Timnian pastoral complex during Chalcolithic–early Bronze times, we argue that desertification was a consequence of socio-economic factors (e.g. higher stocking rates) associated with a shift from a subsistence to a market economy. In addition, we contend that the signature lithic artifact variety (tabular scraper) that appeared in great abundance during this period was directly tied to the emergent market economy and its secondary products (wool) in having been used to shear sheep. Moreover, in that these changes took place largely concurrent with local and regionally recognized evidence of a moist interval, we conclude that the mid- to late-Holocene desertification of the southern Levant was induced more by anthropogenic than climatic factors
Experimental study of a liquid Xenon PET prototype module
A detector using liquid Xenon in the scintillation mode is studied for
Positron Emission Tomography (PET). The specific design aims at taking full
advantage of the liquid Xenon properties. It does feature a promising
insensitive to any parallax effect. This work reports on the performances of
the first LXe prototype module, equipped with a position sensitive PMT
operating in the VUV range (178 nm).Comment: Proc. of the 7th International Workshops on Radiation Imaging

The reliability of the anterior pelvic plane for computer navigated acetabular component placement during total hip arthroplasty: Prospective study with the EOS imaging system
Introduction Computer navigated total hip arthroplasty is mostly based on the use of the anterior pelvic plane (APP) as a reference. EOS is a new imaging system that provides three-dimensional analysis of the pelvis in a functional position with a low dose of radiation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of the APP for placement of the cup during computer navigated THA using EOS. Hypothesis The reliability of the APP is limited for the placement of the acetabular cup during computer navigated THA. Materials and methods This was a prospective monocentric study using the EOS imaging system evaluating 44 patients in the standing position three months after computer navigated THA (Orthopilot™). Reproducibility of EOS measurements were analyzed using SterEOS software and the reliability of the navigation data for the position of the cup were assessed. Results Intra and interobserver reproducibility of the measurements of the orientation of the cup by EOS were good with correlation coefficients above 93% and 95% and confidence intervals of less than ± 5°. Mean cup inclination and anteversion were 41.3° and 20.9° and 44.3° and 29.5° respectively in operatively and post-operatively. The differences between measurements of operative cup inclination using computer assisted navigation and the post-operative EOS measurements were significant (P < 0.05) with a correlation coefficient of less than 40%. Discussion Our study confirms the lack of precision of the APP as a reference for positioning of the acetabular component, especially in relation to anteversion. Although for many years the APP was considered to be a global reference, in fact, it is subject to significant inter-individual variations and variations during changes in position. These factors, associated with the difficulty of determining the preoperative APP, explain the lack of reliability of this reference. Preoperative evaluation of the orientation of APP by EOS and its integration into the navigation system could help the operator position these components
Qualitative modelling and analysis of regulations in multi-cellular systems using Petri nets and topological collections
In this paper, we aim at modelling and analyzing the regulation processes in
multi-cellular biological systems, in particular tissues.
The modelling framework is based on interconnected logical regulatory
networks a la Rene Thomas equipped with information about their spatial
relationships. The semantics of such models is expressed through colored Petri
nets to implement regulation rules, combined with topological collections to
implement the spatial information.
Some constraints are put on the the representation of spatial information in
order to preserve the possibility of an enumerative and exhaustive state space
exploration.
This paper presents the modelling framework, its semantics, as well as a
prototype implementation that allowed preliminary experimentation on some
applications.Comment: In Proceedings MeCBIC 2010, arXiv:1011.005
