Altres ajuts: Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII); Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación.CIBER (Center for Biomedical Network Research; Centro de Investigación Biomédica En Red) is a public national consortium created in 2006 under the umbrella of the Spanish National Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII). This innovative research structure comprises 11 different specific areas dedicated to the main public health priorities in the National Health System. CIBERER, the thematic area of CIBER focused on rare diseases (RDs) currently consists of 75 research groups belonging to universities, research centers, and hospitals of the entire country. CIBERER's mission is to be a center prioritizing and favoring collaboration and cooperation between biomedical and clinical research groups, with special emphasis on the aspects of genetic, molecular, biochemical, and cellular research of RDs. This research is the basis for providing new tools for the diagnosis and therapy of low-prevalence diseases, in line with the International Rare Diseases Research Consortium (IRDiRC) objectives, thus favoring translational research between the scientific environment of the laboratory and the clinical setting of health centers. In this article, we intend to review CIBERER's 15-year journey and summarize the main results obtained in terms of internationalization, scientific production, contributions toward the discovery of new therapies and novel genes associated to diseases, cooperation with patients' associations and many other topics related to RD research

The paper presents the results of a qualitative observational study mapping the emotional responses of a focus group of 8 persons with children with Down Syndrome. The respondents also completed a semi-structured questionnaire. The children of the focus group all belong to the DS daycare centre of the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. The group interview and questionnaire addressed respectively the crossculturally stigma and discrimination versus persons with DS, the parent’s feelings, the impact on the whole family, and the communication with the health care sector. The study revealed that in Cuenca city the negative attitude regarding DS persons still persists. Additionally, the survey shed light on the responses and adaption of parents and families. Last but not least it is recognized that improved communication with health care personnel, knowledgeable of the emotional attitude of parents and family functioning, will be beneficial for the acceptance and care-taking of DS persons. Findings leads to the necessity of developing counseling programs for children with DS and their families, and underscores the vital need to increase community awareness and social support.CuencaVol. 4; no. 2 (2013

The aim was to compare the acute physiological responses of cardiac frequency (CF), systolic blood pressure (SBP), double product (DP), perception of strain index (PSI) and blood lactate (BL) in resistance exercise (RE) between one and two minutes of recovery interval among exercise sets. The sample was composed by 12 voluntary male college students, apparently healthy, with ages between 20 and 32 years (24.6 ± 3.7 years of age; body mass 71.3 ± 8.7 kg; stature 178 ± 5.6 cm; body fat 11.5 ± 4.5%). All participants were submitted to the maximum repeat test (1-RM) on the leg press 45º exercise. Three sets of ten repetitions at 60% of 1-RM in the leg press 45º exercise were performed. Results indicated that only the BL and the CF did not show significant differences between one and two minutes. Analyzing the effect of subsequent sets, the CF, SBP, DP and PSI were significant superior (p ≤ .05) in the 3rd, 2nd and 1st sets, respectively. In conclusion, minor interval of recovery among the sets (one minute) provides greater acute cardiovascular overload (SBP and DP) in relation to a major interval (two minutes) on the RE of the inferior members of young college students

We report the results of an International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC) surveillance study from January 2007-December 2012 in 503 intensive care units (ICUs) in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. During the 6-year study using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) U.S. National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) definitions for device-associated health care–associated infection (DA-HAI), we collected prospective data from 605,310 patients hospitalized in the INICC's ICUs for an aggregate of 3,338,396 days. Although device utilization in the INICC's ICUs was similar to that reported from ICUs in the U.S. in the CDC's NHSN, rates of device-associated nosocomial infection were higher in the ICUs of the INICC hospitals: the pooled rate of central line–associated bloodstream infection in the INICC's ICUs, 4.9 per 1,000 central line days, is nearly 5-fold higher than the 0.9 per 1,000 central line days reported from comparable U.S. ICUs. The overall rate of ventilator-associated pneumonia was also higher (16.8 vs 1.1 per 1,000 ventilator days) as was the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (5.5 vs 1.3 per 1,000 catheter days). Frequencies of resistance of Pseudomonas isolates to amikacin (42.8% vs 10%) and imipenem (42.4% vs 26.1%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates to ceftazidime (71.2% vs 28.8%) and imipenem (19.6% vs 12.8%) were also higher in the INICC's ICUs compared with the ICUs of the CDC's NHSN
