    The impact of clinical placements on the emotional intelligence of occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology, and business students: a longitudinal study

    Background: Emotional intelligence (EI) is a critical skill for healthcare practitioners. Minimal longitudinal research has tracked the changes in EI of therapy students over their final full-time clinical placements. Methods: The Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i2.0) measured the EI of 283 therapy students and 93 business students (control group who do no clinical placements) at three time points over a 16-month period, the same period that the therapy students participated in clinical placements. Results: Analysis of the therapy students showed significant increases over the 16 months of the study in Total EI score, as well as nine other EI skills. However, large percentages of students reported declining scores in emotional expression, assertiveness, self-expression, and stress tolerance, with some students reporting low EI scores before commencing full-time extended clinical placements. Conclusions: The study contributes to new knowledge about the changing EI skills of therapy students as they complete their full-time, extended placements. Emotional intelligence in student therapists should be actively fostered during coursework, clinical placements and when first entering the workforce. University educators are encouraged to include EI content through the therapy curricula. Employers are encouraged to provide peer coaching, mentoring and workshops focused on EI skills to recent graduates

    Medial gastrocnemius volume and echo-intensity after botulinum neurotoxin A interventions in children with spastic cerebral palsy.

    AIM: This cross-sectional investigation evaluated whether recurrent botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT-A) interventions to the medial gastrocnemius have an influence on muscle morphology, beyond Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) level. METHOD: A cohort of typically developing children (n=67; 43 males, 24 females; median age 9y 11mo [range 7y 10mo-11y 6mo]), a cohort of children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) naive to BoNT-A interventions (No-BoNT-A; n=19; 10 males, nine females; median age 9y 3mo [range 8y 5mo-10y 10mo]) and a cohort of children with spastic CP with a minimum of three recurrent BoNT-A interventions to the medial gastrocnemius (BoNT-A; n=19; 13 males, six females; median age 9y 8mo [range 7y 3mo-10y 7mo]) were recruited. Three-dimensional freehand ultrasound was used to estimate medial gastrocnemius volume normalized to body mass and echo-intensity. RESULTS: Normalized medial gastrocnemius volume and echo-intensity significantly differed between the two spastic CP cohorts (p≤0.05), with the BoNT-A cohort having larger alterations. Associations between normalized medial gastrocnemius volume and echo-intensity were highest in the No-BoNT-A cohort, followed by the BoNT-A cohort. Multiple regression analyses revealed that both GMFCS level and BoNT-A intervention history were significantly associated with smaller normalized medial gastrocnemius volume and higher echo-intensity. INTERPRETATION: Recurrent BoNT-A interventions may induce alterations to medial gastrocnemius volume and echo-intensity beyond the natural history of the spastic CP pathology. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: In spastic cerebral palsy, medial gastrocnemius volumes are smaller and echo-intensities higher compared with typical development. Alterations after botulinum neurotoxin A intervention (BoNT-A) are larger than in no BoNT-A intervention.     Sociological stalking? Methods, ethics and power in longitudinal criminological research

    Scholarship on criminal careers and desistance from crime employing longitudinal methodologies has paid scant attention to sociological and anthropological debates regarding epistemology, reflexivity and researcher positionality. This is surprising in light of a recent phenomenological turn in desistance research wherein (former) lawbreakers’ identity, reflexivity, and self-understanding have become central preoccupations. In this article I interrogate aspects of the methodological ‘underside’ (Gelsthorpe, 2007) of qualitative longitudinal research with criminalised women through an examination of the surveillant position of the researcher. Focusing on methods, ethics and power, I examine some contradictions of feminist concerns to ‘give women voice’ in research involving re-tracing an over-surveilled and highly stigmatised population. I reflect on the effects of researcher positionality through a conceptualisation of re-tracing methods as, at worst, a form of sociological stalking

    The four qualities of life: Ordering concepts and measures of the good life

    The terms 'quality-of-life', 'wellbeing' and 'happiness' denote different meanings; sometimes they are used as an umbrella term for all of value, and the other times to denote special merits. This paper is about the specific meanings of the terms. It proposes a classification based on two bi-partitions; between life 'chances' and life 'results', and between 'outer' and 'inner' qualities. Together these dichotomies imply four qualities of life: 1) livability of the environment, 2) life-ability of the individual, 3) external utility of life and 4) inner appreciation of life. This fourfold matrix is applied in three ways: firstly to place related notions and alternative classifications, secondly to explore substantive meanings in various measures for quality of life and thirdly to find out whether quality-of-life can be measured comprehensively. This last question is answered in the negative. Current sum-scores make little sense. The most inclusive summary measure is still how long and happily people live

    Linear Equivalence of Block Ciphers with Partial Non-Linear Layers: Application to LowMC

    LowMC is a block cipher family designed in 2015 by Albrecht et al. It is optimized for practical instantiations of multi-party computation, fully homomorphic encryption, and zero-knowledge proofs. LowMC is used in the Picnic signature scheme, submitted to NIST\u27s post-quantum standardization project and is a substantial building block in other novel post-quantum cryptosystems. Many LowMC instances use a relatively recent design strategy (initiated by Gérard et al. at CHES 2013) of applying the non-linear layer to only a part of the state in each round, where the shortage of non-linear operations is partially compensated by heavy linear algebra. Since the high linear algebra complexity has been a bottleneck in several applications, one of the open questions raised by the designers was to reduce it, without introducing additional non-linear operations (or compromising security). In this paper, we consider LowMC instances with block size nn, partial non-linear layers of size s≤ns \leq n and rr encryption rounds. We redesign LowMC\u27s linear components in a way that preserves its specification, yet improves LowMC\u27s performance in essentially every aspect. Most of our optimizations are applicable to all SP-networks with partial non-linear layers and shed new light on this relatively new design methodology. Our main result shows that when s<ns < n, each LowMC instance belongs to a large class of equivalent instances that differ in their linear layers. We then select a representative instance from this class for which encryption (and decryption) can be implemented much more efficiently than for an arbitrary instance. This yields a new encryption algorithm that is equivalent to the standard one, but reduces the evaluation time and storage of the linear layers from r⋅n2r \cdot n^2 bits to about r⋅n2−(r−1)(n−s)2r \cdot n^2 - (r-1)(n-s)^2. Additionally, we reduce the size of LowMC\u27s round keys and constants and optimize its key schedule and instance generation algorithms. All of these optimizations give substantial improvements for small ss and a reasonable choice of rr. Finally, we formalize the notion of linear equivalence of block ciphers and prove the optimality of some of our results. Comprehensive benchmarking of our optimizations in various LowMC applications (such as Picnic) reveals improvements by factors that typically range between 22x and 4040x in runtime and memory consumption
