    The purpose of this thesis is to learn how capital generates positive returns for society through impact investing. I address the different forms of impact investments along the spectrum and examples of companies that are grouped into each category. Afterward, I highlight the various pre-existing frameworks being used by the industry to properly measure their social returns and then provide insight into my personal experience working with Citigroup, Inc. Impact Fund. This paper includes an empirical study to address my hypothesis that companies who invest in producing social returns receive a positive impact on their financials. It was concluded that social returns do not improve a company’s financial position

    CPE analysis by local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

    Constant-phase elements (CPE) are used extensively in equivalent electrical circuits for fitting of experimental impedance data. The CPE behavior is generally attributed to distributed surface reactivity, surface inhomogeneity, roughness or fractal geometry, electrode porosity, and to current and potential distributions associated with electrode geometry. In this work, different electrochemical systems showing the CPE dependence in the high-frequency range for the overall impedance were considered. Local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was found to provide a good means for assessing the influence of local variations on the CPE behavior seen in global impedance measurements. A separation between 2D and 3D distributions could be easily observed. In the case of a 2D distribution (AZ91 Mg alloy), the origin of the CPE behavior was the distribution of high-frequency resistance associated with the geometry of the disk electrode; whereas, the capacitance was independent of position. In the case of the aluminium electrode, the CPE behavior could be attributed to a combination of 3D and 2D distributions. Geometric distributions can play a significant role in the impedance response of electrochemical systems, and these distributions can lead to CPE behavior

    The " Mendelian Gene " and the " Molecular Gene " : Two Relevant Concepts of Genetic Units

    International audienceWe focus here on two prevalent meanings of the word gene in research articles. On one hand, the gene, named here “molecular gene”, is a stretch of DNA that is transcribed and codes for an RNA or a polypeptide with a known or presumed function (as in “gene network'), whose exact spatial delimitation on the chromosome remains a matter of debate, especially in cases with alternative splicing, antisense transcripts, etc. On the other hand, the gene, called here “Mendelian gene”, is a segregating genetic unit which is detected through phenotypic differences associated with different alleles at the same locus (as in “gene flow”). We show that the “Mendelian gene” concept is still extensively used today in biology research and is sometimes confused with the “molecular gene”. We try here to clarify the distinction between both concepts. Efforts to delineate the beginning and the end of the DNA sequence corresponding to the “Mendelian gene” and the “molecular gene” reveal that both entities do not always match. We argue that both concepts are part of two relevant frameworks for explaining the biological world

    Composite endpoints for malaria case-management: not simplifying the picture?

    Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for infection with Plasmodium spp. offer two main potential advantages related to malaria treatment: 1) ensuring that individuals with malaria are promptly treated with an effective artemisinin-based combination therapy, and 2) ensuring that individuals without malaria do not receive an anti-malarial they do not need (and instead receive a more appropriate treatment). Some studies of the impact of RDTs on malaria case management have combined these two different successes into a binary outcome describing 'correct management'. However combining correct management of positives and negatives into a single summary measure can be misleading. The problems, which are analogous to those encountered in the evaluation of diagnostic tests, can largely be avoided if data for patients with and without malaria are presented and analysed separately. Where a combined metric is necessary, then one of the established approaches to summarise the performance of diagnostic tests could be considered, although these are not without their limitations. Two graphical approaches to help understand case management performance are illustrated

    Reshaping and Capturing Leidenfrost drops with a magnet

    Liquid oxygen, which is paramagnetic, also undergoes Leidenfrost effect at room temperature. In this article, we first study the deformation of oxygen drops in a magnetic field and show that it can be described via an effective capillary length, which includes the magnetic force. In a second part, we describe how these ultra-mobile drops passing above a magnet significantly slow down and can even be trapped.     In this paper, we study the mixed dispersion fourth order nonlinear Helmholtz equation Δ2uβΔu+αu=Γup2u\Delta^2 u -\beta \Delta u + \alpha u= \Gamma|u|^{p-2} u in RN\mathbb R^N for positive, bounded and ZN\mathbb Z^N-periodic functions Γ\Gamma. Using the dual method of Evequoz and Weth, we find solutions to this equation and establish some of their qualitative properties

    Creep motion of a model frictional system

    We report on the dynamics of a model frictional system submitted to minute external perturbations. The system consists of a chain of sliders connected through elastic springs that rest on an incline. By introducing cyclic expansions and contractions of the springs we observe a reptation of the chain. We account for the average reptation velocity theoretically. The velocity of small systems exhibits a series of plateaus as a function of the incline angle. Due to elastic e ects, there exists a critical amplitude below which the reptation is expected to cease. However, rather than a full stop of the creep, we observe in numerical simulations a transition between a continuous-creep and an irregular-creep regime when the critical amplitude is approached. The latter transition is reminiscent of the transition between the continuous and the irregular compaction of granular matter submitted to periodic temperature changes

    Fluctuations of the Casimir-like force between two membrane inclusions

    Although Casimir forces are inseparable from their fluctuations, little is known about these fluctuations in soft matter systems. We use the membrane stress tensor to study the fluctuations of the membrane-mediated Casimir-like force. This method enables us to recover the Casimir force between two inclusions and to calculate its variance. We show that the Casimir force is dominated by its fluctuations. Furthermore, when the distance d between the inclusions is decreased from infinity, the variance of the Casimir force decreases as -1/d^2. This distance dependence shares a common physical origin with the Casimir force itself.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
