    Software for the calculation and modeling of effective diffusivity during osmotic dehydration.

    This paper concerns a comprehensive and graphic computer program for the calculation of effective diffusivities and Fick’s Law model adjustment. The program was designed to be applicable to situations in which solid materials, with a specific geometry (cubes, infinite planes, spheres, infinite cylinders) and a given initial concentration are immersed in a solution with high and constant concentration. Shrinkage can be taken into account. Detailed statistics about calculated average diffusivity and model adjustments to observed data can also be calculated. Some experimental results were used to show the software’s applicability. The agreement between the outputs from the software and data from the literature were excellent and consistent. The software can be used for simulations and in the analysis of the effect of the number of terms in a series and a model’s agreement with experimental data. The program also has a potential of being exploited for educational purposes

    PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND ACCEPTANCE OF JELLY AND NECTAR OF ARAZA AND PAPAYA

    The main objective of this work was to evaluate the acceptance of jelly and nectars made from araza (Eugenia stipitata Mc Vaugh) and papaya. The following percentages of araza and papaya were, respectively, used: 50:50; 40:60; 30:70 and 20:80. For both pulps and products the variables studied were: acidity, pH, total content of soluble solids. Acceptance tests were conducted for the developed products. An inverse relation was observed between the papaya proportion and the soluble solids content and titratable acidity. The jelly made with skin araza presented higher levels of soluble solids, higher pH and lower titratable acidity compared with those obtained with fruit without the peel. Higher concentrations of papaya pulp improved the acceptance of nectar and jelly in all formulations. It was observed an increased in the acceptance when using araza with skin, until levels of 45% of papaya for the jelly and 24% for the nectar. This was probably due to specific sensorial attributes of the araza skin and it is an indicator for future researches

    Eddy diffusivity in convective hydromagnetic systems

    An eigenvalue equation, for linear instability modes involving large scales in a convective hydromagnetic system, is derived in the framework of multiscale analysis. We consider a horizontal layer with electrically conducting boundaries, kept at fixed temperatures and with free surface boundary conditions for the velocity field; periodicity in horizontal directions is assumed. The steady states must be stable to short (fast) scale perturbations and possess symmetry about the vertical axis, allowing instabilities involving large (slow) scales to develop. We expand the modes and their growth rates in power series in the scale separation parameter and obtain a hierarchy of equations, which are solved numerically. Second order solvability condition yields a closed equation for the leading terms of the asymptotic expansions and respective growth rate, whose origin is in the (combined) eddy diffusivity phenomenon. For about 10% of randomly generated steady convective hydromagnetic regimes, negative eddy diffusivity is found.Comment: 18 pages. Added numerical reults. Submitted to European Physical Journal

    Effect of Lanadelumab Compared with Placebo on Prevention of Hereditary Angioedema Attacks : a Randomized Clinical Trial

    Importance: Current treatments for long-term prophylaxis in hereditary angioedema have limitations. Objective: To assess the efficacy of lanadelumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody that selectively inhibits active plasma kallikrein, in preventing hereditary angioedema attacks. Design, Setting, and Participants: Phase 3, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled trial conducted at 41 sites in Canada, Europe, Jordan, and the United States. Patients were randomized between March 3, 2016, and September 9, 2016; last day of follow-up was April 13, 2017. Randomization was 2:1 lanadelumab to placebo; patients assigned to lanadelumab were further randomized 1:1:1 to 1 of the 3 dose regimens. Patients 12 years or older with hereditary angioedema type I or II underwent a 4-week run-in period and those with 1 or more hereditary angioedema attacks during run-in were randomized. Interventions: Twenty-six-week treatment with subcutaneous lanadelumab 150 mg every 4 weeks (n = 28), 300 mg every 4 weeks (n = 29), 300 mg every 2 weeks (n = 27), or placebo (n = 41). All patients received injections every 2 weeks, with those in the every-4-week group receiving placebo in between active treatments. Main Outcome and Measures: Primary efficacy end point was the number of investigator-confirmed attacks of hereditary angioedema over the treatment period. Results: Among 125 patients randomized (mean age, 40.7 years [SD, 14.7 years]; 88 females [70.4%]; 113 white [90.4%]), 113 (90.4%) completed the study. During the run-in period, the mean number of hereditary angioedema attacks per month in the placebo group was 4.0; for the lanadelumab groups, 3.2 for the every-4-week 150-mg group; 3.7 for the every-4-week 300-mg group; and 3.5 for the every-2-week 300-mg group. During the treatment period, the mean number of attacks per month for the placebo group was 1.97; for the lanadelumab groups, 0.48 for the every-4-week 150-mg group; 0.53 for the every-4-week 300-mg group; and 0.26 for the every-2-week 300-mg group. Compared with placebo, the mean differences in the attack rate per month were -1.49 (95% CI, -1.90 to -1.08; P <.001); -1.44 (95% CI, -1.84 to -1.04; P <.001); and -1.71 (95% CI, -2.09 to -1.33; P <.001). The most commonly occurring adverse events with greater frequency in the lanadelumab treatment groups were injection site reactions (34.1% placebo, 52.4% lanadelumab) and dizziness (0% placebo, 6.0% lanadelumab). Conclusions and Relevance: Among patients with hereditary angioedema type I or II, treatment with subcutaneous lanadelumab for 26 weeks significantly reduced the attack rate compared with placebo. These findings support the use of lanadelumab as a prophylactic therapy for hereditary angioedema. Further research is needed to determine long-term safety and efficacy.     Multiple TREX mRNA export complex subunits (e.g., THOC1, THOC2, THOC5, THOC6, THOC7) have now been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), neurodegeneration and cancer. We previously implicated missense and splicing-defective THOC2 variants in NDDs and a broad range of other clinical features. Here we report 10 individuals from nine families with rare missense THOC2 variants including the first case of a recurrent variant (p.Arg77Cys), and an additional individual with an intragenic THOC2 microdeletion (Del-Ex37-38).     A Consensus Map in Cultivated Hexaploid Oat Reveals Conserved Grass Synteny with Substantial Subgenome Rearrangement

    Hexaploid oat ( L., 2 = 6 = 42) is a member of the Poaceae family and has a large genome (∼12.5 Gb) containing 21 chromosome pairs from three ancestral genomes. Physical rearrangements among parental genomes have hindered the development of linkage maps in this species. The objective of this work was to develop a single high-density consensus linkage map that is representative of the majority of commonly grown oat varieties. Data from a cDNA-derived single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array and genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) were collected from the progeny of 12 biparental recombinant inbred line populations derived from 19 parents representing oat germplasm cultivated primarily in North America. Linkage groups from all mapping populations were compared to identify 21 clusters of conserved collinearity. Linkage groups within each cluster were then merged into 21 consensus chromosomes, generating a framework consensus map of 7202 markers spanning 2843 cM. An additional 9678 markers were placed on this map with a lower degree of certainty. Assignment to physical chromosomes with high confidence was made for nine chromosomes. Comparison of homeologous regions among oat chromosomes and matches to orthologous regions of rice ( L.) reveal that the hexaploid oat genome has been highly rearranged relative to its ancestral diploid genomes as a result of frequent translocations among chromosomes. Heterogeneous chromosome rearrangements among populations were also evident, probably accounting for the failure of some linkage groups to match the consensus.
