The work here presented concerns the preliminary result of Project AGRO 689 “Agronomic, economic and environmental interest of macrofungi associated with pinus (Pinus pinaster), chestnut (Castanea sativa) and oak (Quercus pyrenaica), in the Northeast of Portugal: Production of mycorrhizal, pinus, chestnut and oak plants”. We intend to evaluate the diversity of macrofungi associated with each habitat and to get insight into the differences between mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal species as well as of edible and non-edible ones. Edible mycorrhizal and nonedible mycorrhizal ratios will also be calculated in order to know the impact of their collection in either ecological or economical aspects. During the two seasons of collection (Autumn 2004 and Spring 2005), oak habitat showed the highest number of species and carpophores while pinus was the poorest habitat either in terms of number of species and of carpophores. We discuss the results obtained, comparing the three habitats in terms of biodiversity and potential economical interest of edible macrofungi collection and of ratio of the different trophic levels. We intend to contribute for the evaluation of risk assessment of overcollection of edible species and to a sustainable macrofungi management. The work here presented concerns the preliminary results of Project AGRO 689 "Agronomic, economic and environmental interest of macrofungi associated with pinus (Pinus pinaster), chestnut (Castanea sativa) and oak (Quercus pyrenaica), in the Northeast of Portugal: Production of mycorrhizal pinus, chestnut and oak plants" We intend to evaluate the biodiversity ot"macrofungi associated with each habitat and to get insight into the differences between mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal species as well as of edible and non edible ones. Fazer arte, sentir a vida : acerca do acto criador

Tese de mestrado, Pintura (Variante II), 2008, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Belas ArtesThis thesis consists of an attempt to capture the universal characteristics of the artistic creative process, using chosen recurrent examples about painting and writings of the artists discussed. The search does not intend to clarify the creative act by trying to confine it to the pictorial praxis, nor to the plastic arts in particular, but to open it up to the global universe of Art. This work has looked to demonstrate that the diverse reviews of the underlying human processes, (i.e. creativity, imagination, etc) reveal a narrow one and complex symbiosis with the mechanisms of human life in existential terms. Through separate analyses that occur simultaneously in life, and always from the artist's departure point of view, the inner processes generate the artistic main goal and the artistic will is dissected. This demonstrates the deep inter-relationship between art and life, it reveals an essence search in the artistic praxis, as well as the presence of a spiritual parallel with religiosity. The inner need of the artist to reach his artistic main goal, allied to the diverse feelings that immerge, causes the creative presence of a metaphysical dimensional space, which materializes in the work of art. This phenomenon expresses itself in the concept of Metaphysical mimesis. The confluence of the need for essence, plus the structure of an artistic will of metaphysical dimensions, sometimes projects onto the idealistic character of the work. The sensible and rational processes that combine the intentions of the artist are reflected in the artist and his work. Utopia, chaos, organization, sensibility and self-structure are examples of this. There is a permanent search to clarify and structure the way the creative act happens and what precedes the execution of the work of art. Motivation, impulse, artistic feeling, will, necessity, spirituality, creativity, life, existence, death and metaphysics are elements present in the artistic soul. To understand these feelings its impossible not to approach some art definition; from these definitions would come to appear Essentialist theory roots, Metaphysical theory or even a definition theory built from psychological states. However, this points out that these only appear as a consequence of creative act, looking to give to it consistency and coherence

    Klebsiella pneumoniae Invasive Syndrome

    Get PDF
Klebsiella pneumoniae invasive syndrome (KPIS) is a rare clinical condition characterized by primary liver abscess associated with metastatic infection. Most case reports are from Southeast Asia, with only one case described in Portugal. The Authors present the case of a 44-year-old man with a history of fever, dry cough and cervicalgia. A thoracic computed tomography (CT) scan showed multiple pulmonary and hepatic nodules, suggestive of metastatic malignancy. Both blood cultures and bronchoalveolar lavage were positive for Klebsiella pneumoniae. Imaging studies were repeated during his hospital stay, showing a reduction in both number and volume of identified lesions, thus revealing their infectious nature. This case illustrates how much this entity can mimic other illnesses

Rare Presentation of Primary Hyperparathyroidism in a Young Woman

Even though primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a common endocrine disorder, due to better and more regular screening, the usual presentation is only seen in less than 15% of cases of PHPT. The authors present the case of a young female patient with a previous medical history of depression and nephrolithiasis, with one year of bone pain, that had become progressively worse and disabling. In the initial work-up, several lytic bone lesions and moderate hypercalcemia were found, leading to admission of the patient in the Internal Medicine ward for investigation and treatment. The ensuing investigation revealed PHPT due to hyperfunctioning parathyroid adenoma. The patient underwent a parathyroidectomy and at the follow-up assessment two months after discharge, she reported no symptoms and a computer tomography scan showed regression of the lytic lesions. This case is a reminder that severe symptomatic PHPT, a rare form in developed countries nowadays, still exists, and even though it is a medical condition, collaboration with surgical specialties is necessary to ensure the best possible treatment and prognosis
