Two-phase flow and oxygen transport in the perforated gas diffusion layer of proton exchange membrane fuel cell
Liquid water transport in perforated gas diffusion layers (GDLs)is numerically investigated using a three-dimensional (3D)two-phase volume of fluid (VOF)model and a stochastic reconstruction model of GDL microstructures. Different perforation depths and diameters are investigated, in comparison with the GDL without perforation. It is found that perforation can considerably reduce the liquid water level inside a GDL. The perforation diameter (D = 100 μm)and the depth (H = 100 μm)show pronounced effect. In addition, two different perforation locations, i.e. the GDL center and the liquid water break-through point, are investigated. Results show that the latter perforation location works more efficiently. Moreover, the perforation perimeter wettability is studied, and it is found that a hydrophilic region around the perforation further reduces the water saturation. Finally, the oxygen transport in the partially-saturated GDL is studied using an oxygen diffusion model. Results indicate that perforation reduces the oxygen diffusion resistance in GDLs and improves the oxygen concentration at the GDL bottom up to 101% (D = 100 μm and H = 100 μm)
Mapping the Dirac point in gated bilayer graphene
We have performed low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy
measurements on exfoliated bilayer graphene on SiO2. By varying the back gate
voltage we observed a linear shift of the Dirac point and an opening of a band
gap due to the perpendicular electric field. In addition to observing a shift
in the Dirac point, we also measured its spatial dependence using spatially
resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The spatial variation of the Dirac
point was not correlated with topographic features and therefore we attribute
its shift to random charged impurities.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
On the design of multiuser codebooks for uplink SCMA systems
Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising uplink multiple access technique that can achieve superior spectral efficiency, provided that multidimensional codebooks are carefully designed. In this letter, we investigate the multiuser codebook design for SCMA systems over Rayleigh fading channels. The criterion of the proposed design is derived from the cutoff rate analysis of the equivalent multiple-input multiple-output system. Furthermore, new codebooks with signal-space diversity are suggested, while simulations show that this criterion is efficient in developing codebooks with substantial performance improvement, compared with the existing ones
Factorization and Unitarity in Superstring Theory
The overall coefficient of the two-loop 4-particle amplitude in superstring
theory is determined by making use of the factorization and unitarity. To
accomplish this we computed in detail all the relevant tree and one-loop
amplitudes involved and determined their overall coefficients in a consistent

Surface reconstruction of wear in carpets by using a wavelet edge detector
Carpet manufacturers have wear labels assigned to their products by human experts who evaluate carpet samples subjected to accelerated wear in a test device. There is considerable industrial and academic interest in going from human to automated evaluation, which should be less cumbersome and more objective. In this paper, we present image analysis research on videos of carpet surfaces scanned with a 3D laser. The purpose is obtaining good depth Images for an automated system that should have a high percentage of correct assessments for a wide variety of carpets. The innovation is the use of a wavelet edge detector to obtain a more continuously defined surface shape. The evaluation is based on how well the algorithms allow a good linear ranking and a good discriminance of consecutive wear labels. The results show an improved linear ranking for most carpet types, for two carpet types the results are quite significant
