Analyzes media coverage of immigration since 1980 and how industry practices and new media have conditioned the public to associate immigration with illegality, crisis, controversy, and government failure, causing a stalemate in the policy debate

The space of encounter and the making of difference: The entangled lives of Alevi and Sunni neighbours in Turkey

The concept of encounter has long been central to a cosmopolitan ethos in which coming together in urban public space is expected to yield tolerance and pluralism. More recently scholars have reworked this concept to account for not only what is potentially transformative in encounters but also how encounters are conditioned by and productive of relations of power and inequality. Our study contributes to this reworking, and to feminist critiques of space and politics, by centring the spatiality of encounter in the entanglement of neighbours. Drawing on our focus group research (2013–2016) with Alevis and Sunnis in Istanbul and Malatya, we argue that difficult questions of difference, responsibility, and power come to the fore in neighbour relations. While our study underlines how Sunni supremacism and Alevi precarity are constituted in the everyday lives of neighbours, we also find that there is a transformational potential in these encounters that is not fully (re)absorbed into structures of Alevi–Sunni difference. We argue that, across the blurry boundaries of home and neighbourhood spaces, the unbidden intimacies of living in proximity (the drift of smells and sounds, the lines of sight that connect balconies and windows, the presence of neighbours at the thresholds and in the spaces of each other's homes) mean that encounters between neighbours both fuel and trouble the marking out of what is shared and what is separate, what is tolerable and what crosses a line. Our study thereby advances an understanding of the space of encounter, the making of difference, and the political and ethical significance of this entanglement

Exploration of Feminism in Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s The Mistress of Spices

In order to develop an identity, several Indian women novelists have given their Female subjectivity. Representation of Psychological Exploration of Women is a major thematic element in Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's novel. Although feminism is a recurring subject in her works, she explores it via fragmentation. To demonstrate the prevalence of psychological feelings of women in Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's writing, I conduct an exhaustive textual investigation of her first fulllength book, The Mistress of Spices (1997), in this paper. In 2005, the film "The Mistress of Spices" was based on this novel. She hopes that readers of her work would consider the female characters from a feminist perspective

Epiphany of cultural identity and hybridity in Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's Queen of Dreams

As a cultural process, hybridity binds together many nationalities and their family traditions. Divakaruni successfully mixes the familial rituals of Asian American immigrants with the new surroundings in that scenario. In this paper, the researcher has investigated and exposed the manifestations of cultural identity and hybridity. This article investigates the role of immigrant women in cultural ethics and shows how their straddled culture constrains the three cultural identities in Divakaruni's novel Queen of Dreams: suppressed Indian, colonial European, and new world Americans. The existence of these three cultural identities confers a diasporic identity to Indians. These characteristics indicate their rootlessness and identification with the host country's culture and customs. In this novel, Divakaruni has merged ancient history with the aspirations of an occidental civilization. Rakhi speaks up against the mental anguish, cultural isolation, and identity crisis of India's displaced people. She tries to fit in with new cultures. The idea of immigrant strife infuses most of Divakaruni's work, a battle between acquired and accepted cultural norms

Development of a competitive PCR assay for the quantification of total Escherichia coli DNA in water

    Get PDF
Standard health-related microbial water testing relies on the culturability of Escherichia coli (E. coli) to estimate their numbers. Competitive PCR (c-PCR) offers the potential to estimate the E. coli level of a water source without culturing. The aim was to investigate the use of c-PCR reaction to detect and quantify, without prior enrichment, Escherichia coli in water samples. The E. coli malate dehydrogenase Mdh house-keeping gene was modified and used as an internal control and competitor DNA for the c-PCR. E. coli cell concentration equivalents ranging from 20 to 2 x 104 cells ml-1 could be quantified with the c-PCR. Fifty-three water samples from various sources were tested with the DNA extraction and c-PCR protocol. Due to PCR inhibition E. coli Mdh gene copies could only be determined for 20 of the 53 samples (38%). Of the 20 samples tested 15% gave comparable results for competitive PCR and culturable E. coli numbers; 55% obtained higher values with competitive PCR and 30%obtained higher values with the culture based experiments. The c-PCR successfully estimated E. coli numbers that gave comparable results with the culture based microbiological data obtained

An Implementation of Polyglot Voice Supervise Home Device Using Raspberry Pi

    Get PDF
Most of us tend to enjoy the ease of living by doing the bare minimum. The same applies while operating the devices at home by just a few touches or by using our voice in the preferred language. A smart home is an Internet of Things (IoT) platform that uses the internet to control the devices at our home, and this technology has grown enormously over the past few years encouraging new ideas. And with that thought, this system will be implementing Home Automation with Raspberry Pi and Google Assistant by controlling the appliances like lights, fans, air conditioners, temperature sensors, and more, in any preferred language.  Platforms like If This Then That (IFTTT), Adafruit, Message Queueing Telemetry Transport (MQTT), and Raspberry Pi IO are used to connect the hardware with the software that is a common path for devices that are connected to the Relay module and the Google Assistant. The IFTTT platforms are easily available on our smartphones or a website that makes it easy for us to access different devices at different parts of the house or anywhere. Home automation minimizes the manual switching  ON/OFF of the appliances whilst being controlled by the commands that are given by the users. This project builds an automation system that uses the range of Wifi or Bluetooth, which is easily accessible by the users to connect their devices and control them by voice through Google Assistant. This makes it easy for the users to access their devices wherever they are.  Home automation comes as an advantage for older people and especially the physically disabled. The main objective of this proposed project is to provide a comfortable and a digitalized environment to use the day-to-day appliances with added security

Photoneutron reaction cross section measurements on 94Mo and 90Zr relevant to the p-process nucleosynthesis

The photodisintegration cross sections for the 94Mo({\gamma},n) and 90Zr({\gamma},n) reactions have been experimentally investigated with quasi-monochromatic photon beams at the High Intensity {\gamma}-ray Source (HI{\gamma}S) facility of the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The energy dependence of the photoneutron reaction cross sections was measured with high precision from the respective neutron emission thresholds up to 13.5 MeV. These measurements contribute to a broader investigation of nuclear reactions relevant to the understanding of the p-process nucleosynthesis. The results are compared with the predictions of Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculations using two different models for the dipole {\gamma}-ray strength function. The resulting 94Mo({\gamma},n) and 90Zr({\gamma},n) photoneutron stellar reaction rates as a function of temperature in the typical range of interest for the p-process nucleosynthesis show how sensitive the photoneutron stellar reaction rate can be to the experimental data in the vicinity of the neutron threshold
