Purpose: The main purpose of this quantitative research was to assess various e-business strategies implored by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana during the Covid-19 pandemic. Research methodology: It made use of a descriptive design. Data was collected with the use of a structured questionnaire, analysed with excel and presented in tables and figures. Results: The study revealed that small business owners have knowledge of e-business models with the most popular e-business model used being the Business to Consumer (B2C) model, while the least used model was the Business to Government (B2G) model. While imploring the use of e-business models and strategies, SMEs were faced with the challenge of very limited knowledge on the use of e-business strategies. Limitations: The study was limited to businesses in the Tema Metropolitan Assembly of Ghana. Contribution: Most of the SMEs were established in the traditional setting of business operations therefore there was little or no plan for integrating the internet in their operations. However, the pandemic has shifted their attention to adopting some virtual traction to their businesses for the benefit it offers such as continuous sales and more visibility. Further research on how each of the various concepts was used by SMEs is highly recommended

Effects of Motifs and Patterns in Decorated Fabrics on Figure Types

Motifs and patterns are the significant part of every culture from the ancient days.  Embroidery, appliqué, tie dye/batik, prints, smocking and shirring display a rich variety of dynamic patterns and motifs in a garment. Fashion designers in Ghana appear not to take the fabric decorations into consideration when selecting and producing garments for their clients/customers. This results in the poor selection and placement of patterns and motifs in the production of garments for the various figure types. This study aimed at examining the effects of selected fabric decorations on the female figure types. The study adopted a qualitative research approach. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the twenty (20) fashion designers in Kumasi Metropolis. Structure interview was used in gather information from the fashion designers. The study discovered that that motifs and pattern decoration have effects on figure types.  The effect of fabric decorations (embroidery, appliqué, tie and dye and printing, smocking and shirring) on the female figure types (Apple shape, Straight/rectangular shape, Pear shape and Hourglass shape.) helps end users to know the effects of fabric decorations on their figure type and more or less enables the designers to select and design clothes for a particular figure type in terms of choice of fabric decoration. It was recommended that fashion designers should take figure types into consideration when selecting and producing garments for their clients or end users. What is the effect of Inflation on Manufacturing Sector Productivity in Ghana?

    Get PDF
Using annual time series data for Ghana, the current study investigates the effect of inflation on manufacturing sector productivity for the period 1968-2013. The empirical verification is done by using the Johansen test (JT), the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), and the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression test. The results indicate significant stable long run relationship between inflation and manufacturing sector productivity. However, there is insignificant short run link between inflation and manufacturing sector productivity in the VECM. The results of the OLS test indicate negative significant link between inflation and manufacturing sector productivity. The findings suggest that inflation has led to a decrease in manufacturing sector productivity. Policy makers should manage inflation very well in order to improve manufacturing sector productivity. Future study should examine the current topic accounting for causality and structural breaks issues since the present study did not consider these issues

SGAS 143845.1+145407: A Big, Cool Starburst at Redshift 0.816

We present the discovery and a detailed multi-wavelength study of a strongly-lensed luminous infrared galaxy at z=0.816. Unlike most known lensed galaxies discovered at optical or near-infrared wavelengths this lensed source is red, r-Ks = 3.9 [AB], which the data presented here demonstrate is due to ongoing dusty star formation. The overall lensing magnification (a factor of 17) facilitates observations from the blue optical through to 500micron, fully capturing both the stellar photospheric emission as well as the re-processed thermal dust emission. We also present optical and near-IR spectroscopy. These extensive data show that this lensed galaxy is in many ways typical of IR-detected sources at z~1, with both a total luminosity and size in accordance with other (albeit much less detailed) measurements in samples of galaxies observed in deep fields with the Spitzer telescope. Its far-infrared spectral energy distribution is well-fit by local templates that are an order of magnitude less luminous than the lensed galaxy; local templates of comparable luminosity are too hot to fit. Its size (D~7kpc) is much larger than local luminous infrared galaxies, but in line with sizes observed for such galaxies at z~1. The star formation appears uniform across this spatial scale. In this source, the luminosity of which is typical of sources that dominate the cosmic infrared background, we find that star formation is spatially extended and well organised, quite unlike the compact merger-driven starbursts which are typical for sources of this luminosity at z~0.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure
