Fokker-Planck equation of distributions of financial returns and power laws
Our purpose is to relate the Fokker-Planck formalism proposed by [Friedrich
et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5224 (2000)] for the distribution of stock market
returns to the empirically well-established power law distribution with an
exponent in the range 3-5. We show how to use Friedrich et al.'s formalism to
predict that the distribution of returns is indeed asymptotically a power law
with an exponent mu that can be determined from the Kramers-Moyal coefficients
determined by Friedrich et al. However, with their values determined for the
U.S. dollar-German mark exchange rates, the exponent mu predicted from their
theory is found around 12, in disagreement with the often-quoted value between
3 and 5. This could be explained by the fact that the large asymptotic value of
12 does not apply to real data that lie still far from the stationary state of
the Fokker-Planck description. Another possibility is that power laws are
inadequate. The mechanism for the power law is based on the presence of
multiplicative noise across time-scales, which is different from the
multiplicative noise at fixed time-scales implicit in the ARCH models developed
in the Finance literature.Comment: 11 pages, in press in Physica
Partons and QCD in high-energy polarized pp collisions
We present and use a technique for implementing in a fast way, and without
any approximations, higher-order calculations of partonic cross sections into
global analyses of parton distribution functions. The approach, which is set up
in Mellin-moment space, is particularly suited for analyses of future data from
polarized proton-proton collisions at RHIC, but not limited to this case. We
also briefly discuss the effects of soft-gluon resummations on spin
asymmetries.Comment: 6 pages, LaTeX, 5 eps figures, Invited talk presented by W. Vogelsang

Structure functions at large x
Structure function data together with other measurements from fixed-target
deep inelastic scattering and hadron-hadron collider experiments which
contribute to our knowledge of the parton density functions are reviewed. The
inclusive cross-section measurements of neutral and charged current
interactions at HERA are presented and their impact on the parton density
functions is discussed. Future prospects for an improved knowledge of the
parton density functions at large x are briefly mentioned.Comment: Invited talk given at the workshop on ``New Trends in HERA Physics

Experimental Tests of Asymptotic Freedom
Measurements which probe the energy dependence of , the coupling
strength of the strong interaction, are reviewed. Jet counting in
annihilation, combining results obtained in the centre of mass energy range
from 22 to 133 GeV, provides direct evidence for an asymptotically free
coupling, without the need to determine explicit values of . Recent
results from jet production in and in collisions,
obtained in single experiments spanning large ranges of momentum transfer,
, are in good agreement with the running of as predicted by
QCD. Mass spectra of hadronic decays of -leptons are analysed to probe
the running in the very low energy domain, . An update of the world summary of measurements of
consistently proves the energy dependence of and results in a
combined average of .Comment: 11 pages, 8 Figures, LaTeX. To appear in Proc. of QCD Euroconference

Isolated-photon production in polarized pp collisions
We perform a detailed study of the production of isolated prompt photons in
polarized hadronic collisions, in the centre-of-mass energy range relevant to
RHIC. We compare the results obtained for a traditional cone-isolation
prescription, with those obtained by imposing an isolation condition that
eliminates any contribution to the cross section from the fragmentation
mechanism. The latter prescription will allow us to present the first fully
consistent next-to-leading order calculation in polarized prompt-photon
production. We will discuss the theoretical uncertainties affecting the cross
section, addressing the issue of the reliability of the perturbative expansion,
for both inclusive isolated-photon and photon-plus-jet observables. Finally, we
will study the dependence of our predictions upon the polarized parton
densities, and the implications for the measurability of the gluon density.Comment: 34 Pages, LaTeX, 13 figures as ps file
kt Effects in Direct-Photon Production
We discuss the phenomenology of initial-state parton-kt broadening in
direct-photon production and related processes in hadron collisions. After a
brief summary of the theoretical basis for a Gaussian-smearing approach, we
present a systematic study of recent results on fixed-target and collider
direct-photon production, using complementary data on diphoton and pion
production to provide empirical guidance on the required amount of kt
broadening. This approach provides a consistent description of the observed
pattern of deviation of next-to-leading order QCD calculations relative to the
direct-photon data, and accounts for the shape and normalization difference
between fixed-order perturbative calculations and the data. We also discuss the
uncertainties in this phenomenological approach, the implications of these
results on the extraction of the gluon distribution of the nucleon, and the
comparison of our findings to recent related work.Comment: LaTeX, uses revtex and epsf, 37 pages, 15 figure
Examination of direct-photon and pion production in proton-nucleon collisions
We present a study of inclusive direct-photon and pion production in hadronic
interactions, focusing on a comparison of the ratio of gamma/pi0 yields with
expectations from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (NLO pQCD). We also
examine the impact of a phenomenological model involving k_T smearing (which
approximates effects of additional soft-gluon emission) on absolute predictions
for photon and pion production and their ratio.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. Minor changes in wording and in figure
