    Investigation of Force Decay in Aesthetic, Fibre-Reinforced Composite Orthodontic Archwires

    Background/Objectives: Because polymer-based materials typically exhibit viscoelastic properties, the objective was to determine if commercially available, aesthetic, fibre-reinforced composite archwires maintain continuous forces without undergoing force decay when deflected continuously. Materials/Methods: Quasi force decay was evaluated by comparing three-point bending profiles of nickel–titanium (NiTi) and fibre-reinforced composite archwires (BioMers) prior to and after 30 days of continuous deflection of either 1 or 2mm. Paired t-tests or non-parametric signed rank tests were used to statistically compare pre- and post-deflection bending forces. A control group consisting of wires not subject to the 30-day constant deflection was tested to check whether the initial testing altered the second three-point bend test. Results: Significant (P \u3c 0.01) differences in the pre- and post-deflection deactivation force delivery were most evident in the composite 2mm deflection group and all of the NiTi groups. The composite 2mm deflection group failed to deliver consistent forces as the majority of the wires experienced crazing during the 30-day deflection period. The decrease in force delivery in the NiTi groups may be attributed to the small standard deviations. Conclusions: The composite 1mm deflection group demonstrated that fibre-reinforced composite archwires are able to deliver a consistent force after 30 days of deflection. However, the clinical applicability of these fibre-reinforced composite archwires may be limited as they are unable to sustain deflections of 2mm without experiencing crazing and loss of force delivery. Limitations: Clinical efficacy of the aesthetic, fibre-reinforced composite orthodontic archwires remains to be observed

    An exploration into success factors of African American males who obtained terminal degrees from majority White institutions.

    The study consisted of individual unstructured interviews with five African American males that completed a Ph.D. at an MWI. The interviews explored how these individuals made sense of their achievement of a terminal degree.The interviews generated data in the areas of academic success in terms of persistence, campus environment and mentoring, social support, and strategies for overcoming barriers. Once admitted into the degree program, failing or quitting the program was not an option for any of the study participants.This study identified factors that African American males who completed a terminal degree program at an MWI credited to their success. This investigation was qualitative in nature and used the phenomenology methodological approach to identify patterns of success. The theoretical framework was Critical Race Theory (CRT).The success rate of African American males graduating from Majority White Institutions (MWI) is dismal at best. It is an enduring enigma that continues to plague the academy and has negative implications for society as a whole. While African American females and other ethnic groups are making positive gains, African American males trail all others in academic success indicators. Yet, despite a plethora of challenges and countless obstacles, some African American males are successful in their doctoral pursuit

    This thesis discusses the inspiration, creation and performance of Jenny Ballard’s one-woman show, Behind the Vote, which was the other half of the thesis requirement in order to complete the Master of Fine Arts program in Theatre Performance. Behind the Vote examines the importance and meaning of voting, both during the women’s suffrage movement and in the present, as seen through the eyes of three contemporary women, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. This thesis contains Ballard’s inspirations for the project; her research materials about Stanton and Anthony and her source materials for her contemporary characters, including Facebook messages and emails; both her first and final drafts of Behind the Vote and what she learned from writing both versions; her thoughts and impressions on her performance of Behind the Vote, including audience response and feedback; her experiences and knowledge gained since beginning the process of writing her show; her vita; and a CD with photos from one of her performances of her one-woman show, Behind the Vote

    Multiple role transitions

    Previous research has not addressed multiple role transitions for women; this is the purpose of this study. Women spend their days juggling multiple roles trying to do it all. Historically women’s roles have been that of housewife and mother. No longer is the women’s place only in the home. This research builds on the author’s earlier semi-structured qualitative research inquiry, finding that many women try to do it all even when they know they are suffering physically, mentally and spiritually (Addendum A). My present work, which is heuristic in nature, discusses what I discovered during a year of journaling. The expectation is that the journal illustrates rich and robust descriptions of multiple role transitions. The most significant difference between my research study on multiple role transitions and the present study is the depth and quantity of information available for analysis from my journal entries. The study implies that self-preservation, attitude, and social support, were coping means I utilized with multiple role transitions when adding a new role as full-time student to my existing roles

    The Effect of Water Storage on the Bending Properties of Esthetic, Fiber-Reinforced Composite Orthodontic Archwires

    Objective: To study the effect of water storage on the bending properties of fiber-reinforced composite archwires and compare it to nickel-titanium (NiTi), stainless steel (SS), and beta-titanium archwires. Materials and Methods: Align A, B, and C and TorQ A and B composite wires from BioMers Products, 0.014-, 0.016, and 0.018-inch, and 0.019 × 0.025-inch NiTi, 0.016-inch SS, and 0.019 × 0.025-inch beta-titanium archwires were tested (n  =  10/type/size/condition). A 20-mm segment was cut from each end of the archwire; one end was then stored in water at 37°C for 30 days, while the other was stored dry. The segments were tested using three-point bending to a maximum deflection of 3.1 mm with force monitored during loading (activation) and unloading (deactivation). Statistical analysis was completed via two-way analysis of variance with wire and condition (dry and water-stored) as factors. Results: In terms of stiffness and force delivery during activation, in general: beta-titanium was \u3e TorQ B \u3e TorQ A \u3e 0.019 × 0.025-inch NiTi and 0.016-inch SS \u3e Align C \u3e 0.018-inch NiTi \u3e Align B \u3e 0.016-inch NiTi \u3e Align A \u3e 0.014-inch NiTi. Water exposure was detrimental to the larger translucent wires (Align B and C, TorQ A and B) because they were more likely to craze during bending, resulting in decreased forces applied at a given deflection. Align A and the alloy wires were not significantly (P\u3e .05) affected by water storage. Overall, the alloy wires possessed more consistent force values compared to the composite wires

    When Knowing is not enough: A Narrative Exploration of How K-12 Teachers Make Decisions about the Transfer of Critical Competencies from Professional Learning to Daily Practice

    School districts spend millions of dollars each year to provide training and learning to staff working in direct and indirect service to students (National Council on Teacher Quality, 2021). This financial commitment says nothing about what is even more important: the need for school employees and the systems in which we work to serve students more effectively. Despite vast allocations of time and money and presumably best intentions for better social and academic outcomes for students, very little data exist that reflect regular transfer and application of training/learning into professional practice (Nittler et al., 2015). By and large, schools and school systems look the same today as they did 50+ years ago despite the fact that the world looks very different and so much more is known about the cognitive process and contextual contributors involved in erudition development. Teacher application of critical competencies such as cultural responsiveness, trauma informed practices, social emotional learning and basic neuroscience in the ways they conceptualize and implement instructional practices may not be easily apparent during casual observation, yet they are inextricably linked to positive academic and social outcomes for students, thus imperative to effective professional practice. This study investigates the ways in which professional educators make decisions about the transfer and application of professional learning centered on critical competencies (soft skills) in their daily work. Narrative Inquiry (NI) provided the methodological frame for this exploratory study that through thematic analysis surfaced five key factors influencing learning transfer: Instructor/Presenter/Facilitator; Connection to Lived Experience; Relevance to Job Assignment; Alignment with Self-Identity; and COVID–19.     Enhancement of antibiotic efficacy against multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections via combination with curcumin and 1-(1-Naphthylmethyl)-Piperazine

    Objective: The aim of this study was to determine if the plant phenolic curcumin (CUR) and the arylpiperazine 1-(1-naphthylmethyl)-piperazine (NMP) could restore antibiotic efficacy versus MDR P. aeruginosa infection. Methods: The MICs of piperacillin, meropenem and levofloxacin in the presence or absence of CUR or NMP against a MDR strain that over-expresses the MexAB-OprM efflux-pump and the isogenic parent strain were compared. The efficacy of the same combination treatments was also tested in a Galleria mellonella in vivo infection model and larval survival and bacterial burden compared. Results: In vitro, CUR restored the activity of piperacillin, meropenem and levofloxacin versus the MDR strain of P. aeruginosa only weakly. There was no evidence in vitro of a similar effect with NMP. In vivo, treatment of G. mellonella larvae infected with the MDR strain with a combination of NMP or CUR plus levofloxacin, and piperacillin plus CUR, resulted in enhanced therapeutic benefit compared to the monotherapies. When compared with monotherapies, the enhanced efficacy of the combination treatments correlated with reduced bacterial burden. Conclusion: CUR and NMP restored the efficacy of antibiotic therapy in vivo versus MDR P. aeruginosa infection.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
