Utilizing Astroinformatics to Maximize the Science Return of the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey is a 104 square degree survey of the
Virgo Cluster, carried out using the MegaPrime camera of the
Canada-France-Hawaii telescope, from semesters 2009A-2012A. The survey will
provide coverage of this nearby dense environment in the universe to
unprecedented depth, providing profound insights into galaxy formation and
evolution, including definitive measurements of the properties of galaxies in a
dense environment in the local universe, such as the luminosity function. The
limiting magnitude of the survey is g_AB = 25.7 (10 sigma point source), and
the 2 sigma surface brightness limit is g_AB ~ 29 mag arcsec^-2. The data
volume of the survey (approximately 50 terabytes of images), while large by
contemporary astronomical standards, is not intractable. This renders the
survey amenable to the methods of astroinformatics. The enormous dynamic range
of objects, from the giant elliptical galaxy M87 at M(B) = -21.6, to the
faintest dwarf ellipticals at M(B) ~ -6, combined with photometry in 5 broad
bands (u* g' r' i' z'), and unprecedented depth revealing many previously
unseen structures, creates new challenges in object detection and
classification. We present results from ongoing work on the survey, including
photometric redshifts, Virgo cluster membership, and the implementation of fast
data mining algorithms on the infrastructure of the Canadian Astronomy Data
Centre, as part of the Canadian Advanced Network for Astronomical Research

de Branges-Rovnyak spaces: basics and theory
For a contractive analytic operator-valued function on the unit disk
, de Branges and Rovnyak associate a Hilbert space of analytic
functions and related extension space
consisting of pairs of analytic functions on the unit disk . This
survey describes three equivalent formulations (the original geometric de
Branges-Rovnyak definition, the Toeplitz operator characterization, and the
characterization as a reproducing kernel Hilbert space) of the de
Branges-Rovnyak space , as well as its role as the underlying
Hilbert space for the modeling of completely non-isometric Hilbert-space
contraction operators. Also examined is the extension of these ideas to handle
the modeling of the more general class of completely nonunitary contraction
operators, where the more general two-component de Branges-Rovnyak model space
and associated overlapping spaces play key roles. Connections
with other function theory problems and applications are also discussed. More
recent applications to a variety of subsequent applications are given in a
companion survey article
Systems of education governance and cultures of justice in Ireland, Scotland and Pakistan
This chapter compares the issue of cultures of justice in the systems of education governance in three education systems: Ireland, Scotland and Pakistan. The focus for the comparison are the current policies which shape the regulation of education. These policies were reviewed to identify key issues relating to social justice and equality, decision-making and accountability. From the analysis of each system, three central issues were identified: firstly, the improvement of a state education system; secondly, the degree of decentralisation and centralisation in governance structures and thirdly, the expectations placed on school leaders. The chapter concludes by discussing the tensions between the drive for system improvement and opportunities for school leaders to build strategies to address issues of inequality in schools
Cross-species gene expression analysis of species specific differences in the preclinical assessment of pharmaceutical compounds
Animals are frequently used as model systems for determination of safety and efficacy in pharmaceutical research and development. However, significant quantitative and qualitative differences exist between humans and the animal models used in research. This is as a result of genetic variation between human and the laboratory animal. Therefore the development of a system that would allow the assessment of all molecular differences between species after drug exposure would have a significant impact on drug evaluation for toxicity and efficacy. Here we describe a cross-species microarray methodology that identifies and selects orthologous probes after cross-species sequence comparison to develop an orthologous cross-species gene expression analysis tool. The assumptions made by the use of this orthologous gene expression strategy for cross-species extrapolation is that; conserved changes in gene expression equate to conserved pharmacodynamic endpoints. This assumption is supported by the fact that evolution and selection have maintained the structure and function of many biochemical pathways over time, resulting in the conservation of many important processes. Serotonin tranporter methylation and response to cognitive behaviour therapy in children with anxiety disorders
Anxiety disorders that are the most commonly occurring psychiatric disorders in childhood, are associated with a range of social and educational impairments and often continue into adulthood. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment option for the majority of cases, although up to 35-45% of children do not achieve remission. Recent research suggests that some genetic variants may be associated with a more beneficial response to psychological therapy. Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation work at the interface between genetic and environmental influences. Furthermore, epigenetic alterations at the serotonin transporter (SERT) promoter region have been associated with environmental influences such as stressful life experiences. In this study, we measured DNA methylation upstream of SERT in 116 children with an anxiety disorder, before and after receiving CBT. Change during treatment in percentage DNA methylation was significantly different in treatment responders vs nonresponders. This effect was driven by one CpG site in particular, at which responders increased in methylation, whereas nonresponders showed a decrease in DNA methylation. This is the first study to demonstrate differences in SERT methylation change in association with response to a purely psychological therapy. These findings confirm that biological changes occur alongside changes in symptomatology following a psychological therapy such as CBT
Current quark mass dependence of nucleon magnetic moments and radii
A calculation of the current-quark-mass-dependence of nucleon static
electromagnetic properties is necessary in order to use observational data as a
means to place constraints on the variation of Nature's fundamental parameters.
A Poincare' covariant Faddeev equation, which describes baryons as composites
of confined-quarks and -nonpointlike-diquarks, is used to calculate this
dependence The results indicate that, like observables dependent on the
nucleons' magnetic moments, quantities sensitive to their magnetic and charge
radii, such as the energy levels and transition frequencies in Hydrogen and
Deuterium, might also provide a tool with which to place limits on the allowed

Charm-loop effect in and
We calculate the long-distance effect generated by the four-quark operators
with -quarks in the decays. At the lepton-pair
invariant masses far below the -threshold, , we use
OPE near the light-cone. The nonfactorizable soft-gluon emission from
-quarks is cast in the form of a nonlocal effective operator. The matrix elements of this operator are calculated from the QCD
light-cone sum rules with the -meson distribution amplitudes. As a
byproduct, we also predict the charm-loop contribution to
beyond the local-operator approximation. To describe the charm-loop effect at
large , we employ the hadronic dispersion relation with contributions, where the measured amplitudes
are used as inputs. Matching this relation to the result of QCD calculation
reveals a destructive interference between the and
contributions. The resulting charm-loop effect is represented as a
-dependent correction to the Wilson coefficient .
Within uncertainties of our calculation, at below the charmonium region
the predicted ratio is for , but can reach as much as 20% for , the
difference being mainly caused by the soft-gluon contribution.Comment: A few comments added, version to appear in JHE
A piperidinium salt stabilizes efficient metal-halide perovskite solar cells
Longevity has been a long-standing concern for hybrid perovskite photovoltaics. We demonstrate high-resilience positive-intrinsic-negative perovskite solar cells by incorporating a piperidinium-based ionic compound into the formamidinium-cesium lead-trihalide perovskite absorber. With the bandgap tuned to be well suited for perovskite-on-silicon tandem cells, this piperidinium additive enhances the open-circuit voltage and cell efficiency. This additive also retards compositional segregation into impurity phases and pinhole formation in the perovskite absorber layer during aggressive aging. Under full-spectrum simulated sunlight in ambient atmosphere, our unencapsulated and encapsulated cells retain 80 and 95% of their peak and post-burn-in efficiencies for 1010 and 1200 hours at 60° and 85°C, respectively. Our analysis reveals detailed degradation routes that contribute to the failure of aged cells
Who does not gain weight? Prevalence and predictors of weight maintenance in young women
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and predictors of weight maintenance over time in a large sample of young Australian women. DESIGN: This population study examined baseline and 4 y follow-up data from the cohort of young women participating in the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women\u27s Health. SUBJECTS: A total of 8726 young women aged 18-23 y at baseline. MEASURES: Height, weight and body mass index (BMI); physical activity; time spent sitting; selected eating behaviours (eg dieting, disordered eating, takeaway food consumption); cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption; parity; and sociodemographic characteristics. RESULTS: Only 44% of the women reported their BMI at follow-up to be within 5% of their baseline BMI (maintainers); 41% had gained weight and 15% had lost weight. Weight maintainers were more likely to be in managerial or professional occupations; to have never married; to be currently studying; and not to be mothers. Controlling for sociodemographic factors, weight maintainers were more likely to be in a healthy weight range at baseline, and to report that they spent less time sitting, and consumed less takeaway food, than women who gained weight. CONCLUSIONS: Fewer than half the young women in this community sample maintained their weight over this 4 y period in their early twenties. Findings of widespread weight gain, particularly among those already overweight, suggest that early adulthood, which is a time of significant life changes for many women, may be an important time for implementing strategies to promote maintenance of healthy weight. Strategies which encourage decreased sitting time and less takeaway food consumption may be effective for encouraging weight maintenance at this life stage.<br /
