    Concept Validation for Selective Heating and Press Hardening of Automotive Safety Components with Tailored Properties

    © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.A new strategy termed selective heating and press hardening, for hot stamping of boron steel parts with tailored properties is proposed in this paper. Feasibility studies were carried out through a specially designed experimental programme. The main aim was to validate the strategy and demonstrate its potential for structural optimisation. In the work, a lab-scale demonstrator part was designed, and relevant manufacturing and property-assessment processes were defined. A heating technique and selective-heating rigs were designed to enable certain microstructural distributions in blanks to be obtained. A hot stamping tool set was designed for forming and quenching the parts. Demonstrator parts of full martensite phase, full initial phase, and differentially graded microstructures have been formed with high dimensional quality. Hardness testing and three point bending tests were conducted to assess the microstructure distribution and load bearing performance of the as-formed parts, respectively. The feasibility of the concept has been validated by the testing results

    The Potential of Restarts for ProbSAT

    This work analyses the potential of restarts for probSAT, a quite successful algorithm for k-SAT, by estimating its runtime distributions on random 3-SAT instances that are close to the phase transition. We estimate an optimal restart time from empirical data, reaching a potential speedup factor of 1.39. Calculating restart times from fitted probability distributions reduces this factor to a maximum of 1.30. A spin-off result is that the Weibull distribution approximates the runtime distribution for over 93% of the used instances well. A machine learning pipeline is presented to compute a restart time for a fixed-cutoff strategy to exploit this potential. The main components of the pipeline are a random forest for determining the distribution type and a neural network for the distribution's parameters. ProbSAT performs statistically significantly better than Luby's restart strategy and the policy without restarts when using the presented approach.     The die is cast: Brexit's influence on student career intentions

    Brexit, Britain’s referendum to leave the European Union (EU), provided the backdrop for this study, although how or even if it will be implemented is uncertain. Most UK voters supported leaving the EU, yet an overwhelming majority of young people voted to remain. In an environment of economic and labour market ambiguity, we sampled 304 UK university students to examine Brexit’s perceived impact on their career plans. Using Theory of Planned Behaviour, we found that students with higher internal locus of control intended to adapt career plans, although students who identified themselves as British were less proactive. Whilst most students aspired to follow a career path as an employee of a large company, nearly one third intended to become entrepreneurs, a path preferred by twice the number of males as females. Our results provide important insights for post-Brexit planning of educational policy and for businesses and labour markets throughout Europe

    First-principles calculation of the elastic dipole tensor of a point defect: Application to hydrogen in α-zirconium

    The elastic dipole tensor is a fundamental quantity relating the elastic field and atomic structure of a point defect. We review three methods in the literature to calculate the dipole tensor and apply them to hydrogen in α -zirconium using density functional theory (DFT). The results are compared with the dipole tensor deduced from earlier experimental measurements of the λ tensor for hydrogen in α -zirconium. There are significant errors with all three methods. We show that calculation of the λ tensor, in combination with experimentally measured elastic constants and lattice parameters, yields dipole tensor components that differ from experimental values by only 10%–20%. There is evidence to suggest that current state-of-the-art DFT calculations underestimate bonding between hydrogen and α -zirconium

    Isoscalar meson spectroscopy from lattice QCD

    We extract to high statistical precision an excited spectrum of single-particle isoscalar mesons using lattice QCD, including states of high spin and, for the first time, light exotic JPC isoscalars. The use of a novel quark field construction has enabled us to overcome the long-standing challenge of efficiently including quark-annihilation contributions. Hidden-flavor mixing angles are extracted and while most states are found to be close to ideally flavor mixed, there are examples of large mixing in the pseudoscalar and axial sectors in line with experiment. The exotic JPC isoscalar states appear at a mass scale comparable to the exotic isovector states.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    The Polar Regions of Cassiopeia A: The Aftermath of a Gamma Ray Burst?

    Probably not, but it is interesting nevertheless to investigate just how close Cas A might have come to generating such an event. Focusing on the northeast jet filaments, we analyze the polar regions of the recently acquired very deep 1 Ms Chandra X-ray observation. We infer that the so-called "jet" regions are indeed due to jets emanating from the explosion center, and not due to polar cavities in the circumstellar medium at the time of explosion. We place limits on the equivalent isotropic explosion energy in the polar regions (around 2.3 x 10^52 ergs), and the opening angle of the x-ray emitting ejecta (around 7 degrees), which give a total energy in the NE jet of order 10^50 ergs; an order of magnitude or more lower than inferred for "typical" GRBs. While the Cas A progenitor and explosion exhibit many of the features associated with GRB hosts, e.g. extensive presupernova mass loss and rotation, and jets associated with the explosion, we speculate that the recoil of the compact central object, with velocity 330 km/s, may have rendered the jet unstable. In such cases the jet rapidly becomes baryon loaded, if not truncated altogether. Although unlikely to have produced a gamma ray burst, the jets in Cas A suggest that such outflows may be common features of core-collapse SNe.Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures, accepted by Ap

    An Investigation, Using Standard Experimental Techniques, to Determine FLCs at Elevated Temperature for Aluminium Alloys

    An experimental procedure has been developed for the determination of FLCs at elevated temperatures. The GOM ARGUS system was employed for measuring surface strain based on pre-applied grids (pattern), and limit strains were determined according to the ISO 12004-2:2008 standard. Forming limit curves (FLCs) have been determined for AA5754 under warm forming conditions in an isothermal environment. The tests were carried out at various temperatures up to 300oC and forming speeds ranging from 5 – 300 mm s-1 . Results reveal the significant effect of both temperature and forming speed on FLCs of AA5754. Formability increases with increasing temperature above 200oC. Formability also increases with decreasing speed. The presented FLC results show that the best formability exists at low forming speed and the high temperature end of the warm forming range
