Glass bead shot peening retards stress corrosion failure of titanium tanks
Rigidly controlled shot peening retards the incompatibility between titanium alloys and nitrogen tetroxide in rocket-propellant storage tanks. This sets up a residual compressive stress in the surface of a material which reduces tensile stresses in the material fibers, alleviating stress corrosion
PROLIFERATION, MIGRATION, AND SURVIVAL OF CELLS IN THE TELENCEPHALON OF THE BALL PYTHON, PYTHON REGIUS
Reptiles exhibit neurogenesis throughout the brain during adulthood. However, very few studies have quantified telencephalon-wide neurogenesis in adulthood, and no studies have performed these investigations in snakes. Quantifying neurogenesis in the adult snake is essential to understanding class-wide adult neurogenesis and providing insight into the evolution of this trait. The thymidine analog 5-bromo-2’-deoxyuridine (BrdU) was used to quantify cell proliferation, migration, and survival in the ball python (Python regius). First, to determine the proper dose of BrdU for injection we subcutaneously injected 50mg/kg, 100mg/kg, and 250mg/kg into 15 adult male P. regius. We found the 250mg/kg dose marked significantly more cells than the 50mg/kg dose, but not the 100mg/kg dose. Then we subcutaneously injected 100mg/kg BrdU into 15 juvenile male P. regius at 3 different time points (2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months) prior to sacrifice to quantify proliferation, migration, and survival of cells in several telencephalic subregions. After sectioning and immunohistochemical staining, we found proliferation to be highest in the accessory olfactory bulb (AoB), retrobulbar regions (AD, AV), dorsal ventricular ridge (DVR), and dorsolateral amygdala/lateral amygdala (DLA/LA). Of the proliferating cells, the proportions of cells that migrated after 2 weeks were highest in the ventral lateral region (VL), anterior medial and lateral cortices (aMC, aLC), and anterior NS (aNS). After 2 months, the highest proportional survival was in the AoB, aLC, aMC, aNS, DVR, and ventral medial regions (VM). Regions involved in long-term functions like spatial memory may require less proliferation and longer survival, while regions involved in short-term functions undergo more proliferation with higher relative attrition

Spatially distributed water-balance and meteorological data from the Wolverton catchment, Sequoia National Park, California
Accurate water-balance measurements in the seasonal, snow-dominated Sierra Nevada are important for forest and downstream water management. However, few sites in the southern Sierra offer detailed records of the spatial and temporal patterns of snowpack and soil-water storage and the fluxes affecting them, i.e., precipitation as rain and snow, snowmelt, evapotranspiration, and runoff. To explore these stores and fluxes we instrumented the Wolverton basin (2180-2750 m) in Sequoia National Park with distributed, continuous sensors. This 2006-2016 record of snow depth, soil moisture and soil temperature, and meteorological data quantifies the hydrologic inputs and storage in a mostly undeveloped catchment. Clustered sensors record lateral differences with regards to aspect and canopy cover at approximately 2250 and 2625 m in elevation, where two meteorological stations are installed. Meteorological stations record air temperature, relative humidity, radiation, precipitation, wind speed and direction, and snow depth. Data are available at hourly intervals by water year (1 October-30 September) in non-proprietary formats from online data repositories (https://doi.org/10.6071/M3S94T)
Performance of a Quaternary Logic Design
This paper analyzes the performance of a quaternary logic circuit and its components. The multi-valued logic design consisting of two drivers and a transistor matrix is simulated using Mentor Graphic software. Functional operation of the circuit is shown and propagation delay and power consumption are determined. The design is dependent on the voltage values for the multi-valued logic. Three logic cases are investigated. The performance of the logic circuit as a quaternary difference calculator is described
Epitaxial Growth Kinetics with Interacting Coherent Islands
The Stranski-Krastanov growth kinetics of undislocated (coherent)
3-dimensional islands is studied with a self-consistent mean field rate theory
that takes account of elastic interactions between the islands. The latter are
presumed to facilitate the detachment of atoms from the islands with a
consequent decrease in their average size. Semi-quantitative agreement with
experiment is found for the time evolution of the total island density and the
mean island size. When combined with scaling ideas, these results provide a
natural way to understand the often-observed initial increase and subsequent
decrease in the width of the coherent island size distribution.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
