Anomaly of Film Porosity Dependence on Deposition Rate
This Letter reports an anomaly of film porosity dependence on deposition rate
during physical vapor deposition - the porosity increases as deposition rate
decreases. Using glancing angle deposition of Cu on SiO2 substrate, the authors
show that the Cu film consists of well separated nanorods when the deposition
rate is 1 nm/second, and that the Cu films consists of a more uniform (or lower
porosity) film when the deposition rate is 6 nm/second; all other deposition
conditions remain the same. This anomaly is the result of interplay among
substrate non-wetting, density of Cu nuclei on the substrate, and the minimum
diameter of nanorods
Multiquantum well structure with an average electron mobility of 4.0Ă10^6 cm^2/V s
We report a modulation-doped multiquantum well structure which suppresses the usual ambient light effect associated with modulation doping. Ten GaAs quantum wells 300-Ă
wide are symmetrically modulation doped using Si ÎŽ doping at the center of 3600-Ă
-wide Al0.1Ga0.9As barriers. The low field mobility of each well is 4.0Ă10^6 cm/V s at a density of 6.4Ă10^10 cm^â2 measured at 0.3 K either in the dark, or during, or after, exposure to light. This mobility is an order of magnitude improvement over previous work on multiwells
Superfluid and Mott Insulator phases of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures
We study the ground state phases of Bose-Fermi mixtures in one-dimensional
optical lattices with quantum Monte Carlo simulations using the Canonical Worm
algorithm. Depending on the filling of bosons and fermions, and the on-site
intra- and inter-species interaction, different kinds of incompressible and
superfluid phases appear. On the compressible side, correlations between bosons
and fermions can lead to a distinctive behavior of the bosonic superfluid
density and the fermionic stiffness, as well as of the equal-time Green
functions, which allow one to identify regions where the two species exhibit
anticorrelated flow. We present here complete phase diagrams for these systems
at different fillings and as a function of the interaction parameters.Comment: 8 pages, 12 figure
Human Chronic Necrotizing Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis: A Novel Case Report
Necrotizing and granulomatous meningoencephalitis are common central nervous system diseases known to affect canines. To date, necrotizing granulomatous meningoencephalitis has yet to be described in humans. Current studies of presumed pathogenesis and possible treatment options have only been described in canines. This is a case report of a 55-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with necrotizing granulomatous meningoencephalitis in the setting of new-onset neurological symptoms without any infectious or malignant source
VetCompass Australia: A National Big Data Collection System for Veterinary Science
VetCompass Australia is veterinary medical records-based research coordinated with the global VetCompass endeavor to maximize its quality and effectiveness for Australian companion animals (cats, dogs, and horses). Bringing together all seven Australian veterinary schools, it is the first nationwide surveillance system collating clinical records on companion-animal diseases and treatments. VetCompass data service collects and aggregates real-time, clinical records for researchers to interrogate, delivering sustainable and cost-effective access to data from hundreds of veterinary practitioners nationwide. Analysis of these clinical records will reveal geographical and temporal trends in the prevalence of inherited and acquired diseases, identify frequently prescribed treatments, revolutionize clinical auditing, help the veterinary profession to rank research priorities, and assure evidence-based companion-animal curricula in veterinary schools. VetCompass Australia will progress in three phases: (1) roll-out of the VetCompass platform to harvest Australian veterinary clinical record data; (2) development and enrichment of the coding (data-presentation) platform; and (3) creation of a world-first, real-time surveillance interface with natural language processing (NLP) technology. The first of these three phases is described in the current article. Advances in the collection and sharing of records from numerous practices will enable veterinary professionals to deliver a vastly improved level of care for companion animals that will improve their quality of life
Edible films based on aqueous emulsions of low-methoxyl pectin with recovered and purified sunflower waxes
BACKGROUND: Edible films were obtained from aqueous emulsions prepared with low-methoxyl pectin at different concentrations (10, 20 and 30 g kgâ1) and two sunflower wax samples recovered from two waste samples of filter cakes produced in the winterization process of sunflower oil. The two sunflower waxes samples recovered (from the normal hybrid, NSFW, and from the high-oleic hybrid, HOSFW) were added in three proportions (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 g g-1 of pectin). Films were evaluated according to their structure, water resistance, water vapor permeability, mechanical properties and thermal behavior. RESULTS: In general, good dispersion of the lipid material was observed in the cross-sections of the film. Increase in the water resistance (lower swelling index and water adsorption) was associated with a greater pectin content crosslinked with Ca2+ and the hydrophobic nature of waxes. The reduction in water vapor transfer rates was influenced by the effect of the wax addition, their fatty acid composition and their good distribution on the film. More resistant, rigid and less flexible films were obtained with lower pectin content, finding an inverse relationship between tensile strength and elongation percentage values. CONCLUSION: These results evidence a promising alternative in the development of innovative strategies to valorize sunflower waxes derived from waste material.Fil: Chalapud Narvaez, Mayra Carolina.
