    A hierarchical adaptive nonlinear model predictive control approach for maximizing tire force usage in autonomous vehicles

    The ability to reliably maximize tire force usage would improve the safety of autonomous vehicles, especially in challenging edge cases. However, vehicle control near the limits of handling has many challenges, including robustly contending with tire force saturation, balancing model fidelity and computational efficiency, and coordinating inputs with the lower level chassis control system. This work studies Nonlinear Model Predictive Control for limit handling, specifically adapting to changing tire-road conditions and maximally allocating tire force utilization. We present a novel hierarchical framework that combines a single-track model with longitudinal weight transfer dynamics in the predictive control layer, with lateral brake distribution occurring at the chassis control layer. This vehicle model is simultaneously used in an Unscented Kalman Filter for online friction estimation. Comparative experiments on a full-scale vehicle operating on a race track at up to 95% of maximum tire force usage demonstrate the overall practical effectiveness of this approach.Comment: Preprint of accepted paper in Field Robotic

    GAME-UP: Game-Aware Mode Enumeration and Understanding for Trajectory Prediction

    Interactions between road agents present a significant challenge in trajectory prediction, especially in cases involving multiple agents. Because existing diversity-aware predictors do not account for the interactive nature of multi-agent predictions, they may miss these important interaction outcomes. In this paper, we propose GAME-UP, a framework for trajectory prediction that leverages game-theoretic inverse reinforcement learning to improve coverage of multi-modal predictions. We use a training-time game-theoretic numerical analysis as an auxiliary loss resulting in improved coverage and accuracy without presuming a taxonomy of actions for the agents. We demonstrate our approach on the interactive subset of Waymo Open Motion Dataset, including three subsets involving scenarios with high interaction complexity. Experiment results show that our predictor produces accurate predictions while covering twice as many possible interactions versus a baseline model.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    Exact operator bosonization of finite number of fermions in one space dimension

    We derive an exact operator bosonization of a finite number of fermions in one space dimension. The fermions can be interacting or noninteracting and can have an arbitrary hamiltonian, as long as there is a countable basis of states in the Hilbert space. In the bosonized theory the finiteness of the number of fermions appears as an ultraviolet cut-off. We discuss implications of this for the bosonized theory.     Review of the cultivation program within the National Alliance for Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts

    The cultivation efforts within the National Alliance for Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts (NAABB)were developed to provide four major goals for the consortium, which included biomass production for downstream experimentation, development of new assessment tools for cultivation, development of new cultivation reactor technologies, and development of methods for robust cultivation. The NAABB consortium test beds produced over 1500 kg of biomass for downstream processing. The biomass production included a number of model production strains, but also took into production some of the more promising strains found through the prospecting efforts of the consortium. Cultivation efforts at large scale are intensive and costly, therefore the consortium developed tools and models to assess the productivity of strains under various environmental conditions, at lab scale, and validated these against scaled outdoor production systems. Two new pond-based bioreactor designs were tested for their ability to minimize energy consumption while maintaining, and even exceeding, the productivity of algae cultivation compared to traditional systems. Also, molecular markers were developed for quality control and to facilitate detection of bacterial communities associated with cultivated algal species, including the Chlorella spp. pathogen, Vampirovibrio chlorellavorus,which was identified in at least two test site locations in Arizona and New Mexico. Finally, the consortium worked on understanding methods to utilize compromised municipal waste water streams for cultivation.     Convalescent plasma in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 (RECOVERY): a randomised controlled, open-label, platform trial

    SummaryBackground Azithromycin has been proposed as a treatment for COVID-19 on the basis of its immunomodulatoryactions. We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of azithromycin in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19.Methods In this randomised, controlled, open-label, adaptive platform trial (Randomised Evaluation of COVID-19Therapy [RECOVERY]), several possible treatments were compared with usual care in patients admitted to hospitalwith COVID-19 in the UK. The trial is underway at 176 hospitals in the UK. Eligible and consenting patients wererandomly allocated to either usual standard of care alone or usual standard of care plus azithromycin 500 mg once perday by mouth or intravenously for 10 days or until discharge (or allocation to one of the other RECOVERY treatmentgroups). Patients were assigned via web-based simple (unstratified) randomisation with allocation concealment andwere twice as likely to be randomly assigned to usual care than to any of the active treatment groups. Participants andlocal study staff were not masked to the allocated treatment, but all others involved in the trial were masked to theoutcome data during the trial. The primary outcome was 28-day all-cause mortality, assessed in the intention-to-treatpopulation. The trial is registered with ISRCTN, 50189673, and ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04381936.Findings Between April 7 and Nov 27, 2020, of 16 442 patients enrolled in the RECOVERY trial, 9433 (57%) wereeligible and 7763 were included in the assessment of azithromycin. The mean age of these study participants was65·3 years (SD 15·7) and approximately a third were women (2944 [38%] of 7763). 2582 patients were randomlyallocated to receive azithromycin and 5181 patients were randomly allocated to usual care alone. Overall,561 (22%) patients allocated to azithromycin and 1162 (22%) patients allocated to usual care died within 28 days(rate ratio 0·97, 95% CI 0·87–1·07; p=0·50). No significant difference was seen in duration of hospital stay (median10 days [IQR 5 to >28] vs 11 days [5 to >28]) or the proportion of patients discharged from hospital alive within 28 days(rate ratio 1·04, 95% CI 0·98–1·10; p=0·19). Among those not on invasive mechanical ventilation at baseline, nosignificant difference was seen in the proportion meeting the composite endpoint of invasive mechanical ventilationor death (risk ratio 0·95, 95% CI 0·87–1·03; p=0·24).Interpretation In patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19, azithromycin did not improve survival or otherprespecified clinical outcomes.     Beyond the stable handling limits: nonlinear model predictive control for highly transient autonomous drifting

    Autonomous vehicles that can reliably operate outside the stable handling limits would have access to a wider range of maneuvers in emergencies, improving overall safety. To that end, this paper presents a novel Nonlinear MPC approach for vehicle control with deeply saturated rear tires. Longitudinal slip management is elevated from the chassis control layer into the optimisation problem by using a coupled-slip tire model, and explicitly including wheelspeed dynamics. Terminal costs on sideslip stability help compensate for the finite horizon, while road bounds and static obstacles are encoded using slack constraints. Experiments on a racetrack with a modified Toyota GR Supra validate the controller's ability to smoothly transition from dynamic, non-equilibrium drifting to grip driving. Further experiments demonstrate robustness to significant longitudinal force and wheelspeed disturbances, and showcase the controller flexibly transitioning in and out of the sliding tire regime to balance slack constraints with tracking objectives.</p

    Treatment of COVID-19 Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome With a Tabletop Noninvasive Ventilation Device in a Respiratory Intermediate Care Unit.

    ObjectiveTo study the outcomes of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) administered through a tabletop device for coronavirus disease 2019 acute respiratory distress syndrome in the respiratory intermediate care unit (RIMCU) at a tertiary care hospital in India.Patients and methodsWe retrospectively studied a cohort of hospitalized patients deteriorating despite low-flow oxygen support who received protocolized management with positive airway pressure using a tabletop NIV device in the RIMCU as a step-up rescue therapy from July 30, 2020 to November 14, 2020. Treatment was commenced on the continuous positive airway pressure mode up to a pressure of 10 cm of H2O, and if required, inspiratory pressures were added using the bilevel positive air pressure mode. Success was defined as weaning from NIV and stepping down to the ward, and failure was defined as escalation to the intensive care unit, the need for intubation, or death.ResultsIn total, 246 patients were treated in the RIMCU during the study period. Of these, 168 received respiratory support via a tabletop NIV device as a step-up rescue therapy. Their mean age was 54 years, and 83% were men. Diabetes mellitus (78%) and hypertension (44%) were the commonest comorbidities. Treatment was successful with tabletop NIV in 77% (129/168) of the patients; of them, 41% (69/168) received treatment with continuous positive airway pressure alone and 36% (60/168) received additional increased inspiratory pressure via the bilevel positive air pressure mode.ConclusionRespiratory support using the tabletop NIV device was an effective and economical treatment for coronavirus disease 2019 acute respiratory distress syndrome. Further studies are required to assess the appropriate time of initiation for maximal benefits and judicious utilization of resources

    Whole-exome-sequencing-based discovery of human FADD deficiency

    Germline mutations in FASL and FAS impair Fas-dependent apoptosis and cause recessively or dominantly inherited autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS). Patients with ALPS typically present with no other clinical phenotype. We investigated a large, consanguineous, multiplex kindred in which biological features of ALPS were found in the context of severe bacterial and viral disease, recurrent hepatopathy and encephalopathy, and cardiac malformations. By a combination of genome-wide linkage and whole-exome sequencing, we identified a homozygous missense mutation in FADD, encoding the Fas-associated death domain protein (FADD), in the patients. This FADD mutation decreases steady-state protein levels and impairs Fas-dependent apoptosis in vitro, accounting for biological ALPS phenotypes in vivo. It also impairs Fas-independent signaling pathways. The observed bacterial infections result partly from functional hyposplenism, and viral infections result from impaired interferon immunity. We describe here a complex clinical disorder, its genetic basis, and some of the key mechanisms underlying its pathogenesis.
