    Demand for livestock products in developing countries with a focus on quality and safety attributes: Evidence from Asia and Africa

    Rising developing country demand for livestock products propelled by income and population growth, and by urbanization offers poverty reduction opportunities to actors in the supply chain. The increase in volumes demanded also features diversification and increased demand for quality attributes. Reliable food safety and information on animal husbandry and geographic origin have long been recognized as value-adding differentiation mechanisms in the developed world. Anecdotal accounts suggest that this is also the case in developing countries. However, little consistent rigorously researched evidence has been published on this subject. This report presents results based on case studies conducted in a number of developing countries in Asia and Africa—Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Tunisia, and Vietnam. An overview of the theoretically consistent methods used and a synthesis of the results obtained in the various case studies are presented first followed by the case studies each describing a study of specific commodities in specific developing country locations. A consistent set of results emerges, wherein consumers exhibit willingness to pay for quality and safety in animal-origin foods, and within which this willingness to pay is strongest amongst the wealthy and the urban dwellers. However, the intricacy and variety of quality definition and measurement are demonstrated fully, as they occur between and within countries, commodity groups and other settings. The key message from the results is the evidence that quality and safety considerations in products of animal origin food provide commercial opportunities for developing country producers, market actors and industry participants

This is especially true of higher education, which in many countries faces increasing expectations that it serves as a driver facilitating social and cultural advancement. New modes of inclusive delivery need to be tested with real students, new curriculum approaches need to be validated, new platforms need applications and content to succeed, and analytical tools need broadly based data to be truly useful. These also include new ways of collaborating and presenting domain specific subject matter. It is increasingly likely that the University of the future will not look like present-day institutional arrangements

    Synthesis Of Carbon Nitride Films At Low Temperatures

    Carbon nitride films (CN x) have been deposited by sputtering a graphite target with nitrogen ions. Films were grown both with and without the presence of an assisting focused N 2 ion beam. The sputter beam voltage was varied between 150 and 1500 V and the applied assisting beam voltage from 80 to 500 V. The substrate was held at fixed temperatures between 80 and 673 K. The coatings were characterized with respect to their electrical, optical, and structural properties. The nitrogen content was measured by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and a maximum nitrogen concentration of 44 at. % was obtained for a nonassisted sample deposited at 140 K. The chemical structure was investigated by XPS and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Reduction of the substrate temperature in conjunction with low sputter beam voltages (<200 V) caused the optical band gap to increase up to 2.2 eV, the sheet conductivity to decrease to less th an 10 -9 (Ω cm) -1 and the density to be reduced to 1.6 g/cm 3. The increasing transparency is accompanied by structural changes indicating a transition from a predominantly sp 2 bonded amorphous sp 2/sp 3 C-N network to a more linear polymerlike structure consisting predominantly of doubly and triply bonded C and N atoms.     Investigating the correlation between deactivation and the carbon deposited on the surface of Ni/Al2O3 and Ni/La2O3-Al2O3 catalysts during the biogas reforming reaction

    Ni/Al2O3 and Ni/La2O-Al2O3 catalysts were investigated for the biogas reforming reaction using CH4/CO2 mixtures with minimal dilution. Stability tests at various reaction temperatures were conducted and TGA/DTG, Raman, STEM-HAADF, HR-TEM, XPS techniques were used to characterize the spent samples. Graphitized carbon allotrope structures, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and amorphous carbon were formed on all samples. Metallic Ni0 was recorded for all (XPS), whereas a strong peak corresponding to Ni2O3/NiAl2O4, was observed for the Ni/Al sample (650–750 °C). Stability tests confirm that the Ni/LaAl catalyst deactivates at a more gradual rate and is more active and selective in comparison to the Ni/Al for all temperatures. The Ni/LaAl exhibits good durability in terms of conversion and selectivity, whereas the Ni/Al gradually loses its activity in CH4 and CO2 conversion, with a concomitant decrease of the H2 and CO yield. It can be concluded that doping Al2O3 with La2O3 stabilizes the catalyst by (a) maintaining the Ni0 phase during the reaction, due to higher dispersion and stronger active phase-support interactions, (b) leading to a less graphitic and more defective type of deposited carbon and (c) facilitating the deposited carbon gasification due to the enhanced CO2 adsorption on its increased surface basic sites

    This article presents a framework to measure activity and potential for open source software development and use at a country level. The framework draws on interviews with experts in the open source software industry and numerous existing studies in the literature to identify relevant indicators. Several indices of diverse variable lists and weighting and aggregation methods were developed and tested for robustness. The results provide a first step toward more systematically understanding the current state of open source software internationally

    Topological Andr\'e-Quillen homology for commutative SS-algebras was introduced by Basterra following work of Kriz, and has been intensively studied by several authors. In this paper we discuss it as a homology theory on CW SS-algebras and apply it to obtain results on minimal atomic pp-local SS-algebras which generalise those of Baker and May for pp-local spectra and simply connected spaces.     Sediment removal by prairie filter strips in row-cropped ephemeral watersheds

    Twelve small watersheds in central Iowa were used to evaluate the effectiveness of prairie filter strips (PFS) in trapping sediment from agricultural runoff. Four treatments with PFS of different size and location (100% rowcrop, 10% PFS of total watershed area at footslope, 10% PFS at footslope and in contour strips, 20% PFS at footslope and in contour strips) arranged in a balanced incomplete block design were seeded in July 2007. All watersheds were in bromegrass ( L.) for at least 10 yr before treatment establishment. Cropped areas were managed under a no-till, 2-yr corn ( L.)-soybean [ (L.) Merr.] rotation beginning in 2007. About 38 to 85% of the total sediment export from cropland occurred during the early growth stage of rowcrop due to wet field conditions and poor ground cover. The greatest sediment load was observed in 2008 due to the initial soil disturbance and gradually decreased thereafter. The mean annual sediment yield through 2010 was 0.36 and 8.30 Mg ha for the watersheds with and without PFS, respectively, a 96% sediment trapping efficiency for the 4-yr study period. The amount and distribution of PFS had no significant impact on runoff and sediment yield, probably due to the relatively large width (37-78 m) of footslope PFS. The findings suggest that incorporation of PFS at the footslope position of annual rowcrop systems provides an effective approach to reducing sediment loss in runoff from agricultural watersheds under a no-till system

    The inclusion of children with disabilities in oral health research: A systematic review

    OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to describe the extent to which oral health research since the advent of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the current movement on the inclusion of voices of children, has been done on or with children with disabilities. METHODS: A systematic review of the dental literature for children with disabilities from 2001 to 2017 was conducted. Electronic databases were searched for oral health literature on the involvement of children with disabilities. Each identified article was examined by 2 reviewers against the inclusion criteria and categorized according to the extent to which children with disabilities were involved in oral health research, type of study, children's ages, type of impairment and the country of origin. RESULTS: The search included 113 articles after application of the exclusion criteria. Of these papers, 6.2% were classified as research with children, 41.6% used proxies to gain the perspective of children with disabilities and 52.2% were classified as research on children with disabilities. The majority of studies, which attempted some form of inclusion, were from Sweden and India. CONCLUSIONS: Most oral health research is conducted on children with disabilities (viewing them as objects) rather than with them (viewing them as active participants). Unlike previous systematic reviews which report an increase in the inclusion of the voices of children in oral health research, children with disabilities were mostly excluded from research. Future research should attempt to use methods which involve children with disabilities as fully as possible in the research process. This ensures that their perspectives are obtained and their voices are heard

    A study of the nanostructure and hardness of electron beam evaporated TiAlBN coatings

    TiAlBN coatings have been deposited by electron beam (EB) evaporation from a single TiAlBN material source onto AISI 316 stainless steel substrates at a temperature of 450 °C and substrate bias of − 100 V. The stoichiometry and nanostructure have been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The hardness and elastic modulus were determined by nanoindentation. Five coatings have been deposited, three from hot-pressed TiAlBN material and two from hot isostatically pressed (HIPped) material. The coatings deposited from the hot-pressed material exhibited a nanocomposite nc-(Ti,Al)N/a-BN/a-(Ti,Al)B2 structure, the relative phase fraction being consistent with that predicted by the equilibrium Ti–B–N phase diagram. Nanoindentation hardness values were in the range of 22 to 32 GPa. Using the HIPped material, coating (Ti,Al)B0.29N0.46 was found to have a phase composition of 72–79 mol.% nc-(Ti,Al)(N,B)1 − x+ 21–28 mol.% amorphous titanium boride and a hardness of 32 GPa. The second coating, (Ti,Al)B0.66N0.25, was X-ray amorphous with a nitride+boride multiphase composition and a hardness of 26 GPa. The nanostructure and structure–property relationships of all coatings are discussed in detail. Comparisons are made between the single-EB coatings deposited in this work and previously deposited twin-EB coatings. Twin-EB deposition gives rise to lower adatom mobilities, leading to (111) (Ti,Al)N preferential orientation, smaller grain sizes, less dense coatings and lower hardnesses
