    Stress-Induced Cocaine Seeking Requires a Beta-2 Adrenergic Receptor-Regulated Pathway from the Ventral Bed Nucleus of the Stria Terminalis That Regulates CRF Actions in the Ventral Tegmental Area

    The ventral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (vBNST) has been implicated in stress-induced cocaine use. Here we demonstrate that, in the vBNST, corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) is expressed in neurons that innervate the ventral tegmental area (VTA), a site where the CRF receptor antagonist antalarmin prevents the reinstatement of cocaine seeking by a stressor, intermittent footshock, following intravenous self-administration in rats. The vBNST receives dense noradrenergic innervation and expresses β adrenergic receptors (ARs). Footshock-induced reinstatement was prevented by bilateral intra-vBNST injection of the β-2 AR antagonist, ICI-118,551, but not the β-1 AR antagonist, betaxolol. Moreover, bilateral intra-vBNST injection of the β-2 AR agonist, clenbuterol, but not the β-1 agonist, dobutamine, reinstated cocaine seeking, suggesting that activation of vBNST β-2 AR is both necessary for stress-induced reinstatement and sufficient to induce cocaine seeking. The contribution of a β-2 AR-regulated vBNST-to-VTA pathway that releases CRF was investigated using a disconnection approach. Injection of ICI-118,551 into the vBNST in one hemisphere and antalarmin into the VTA of the contralateral hemisphere prevented footshock-induced reinstatement, whereas ipsilateral manipulations failed to attenuate stress-induced cocaine seeking, suggesting that β-2 AR regulate vBNST efferents that release CRF into the VTA, activating CRF receptors, and promoting cocaine use. Last, reinstatement by clenbuterol delivered bilaterally into the vBNST was prevented by bilateral vBNST pretreatment with antalarmin, indicating that β-2 AR-mediated actions in the vBNST also require local CRF receptor activation. Understanding the processes through which stress induces cocaine seeking should guide the development of new treatments for addiction

    Making use of geometrical invariants in black hole collisions

    We consider curvature invariants in the context of black hole collision simulations. In particular, we propose a simple and elegant combination of the Weyl invariants I and J, the {\sl speciality index} S{\cal S}. In the context of black hole perturbations S\cal S provides a measure of the size of the distortions from an ideal Kerr black hole spacetime. Explicit calculations in well-known examples of axisymmetric black hole collisions demonstrate that this quantity may serve as a useful tool for predicting in which cases perturbative dynamics provide an accurate estimate of the radiation waveform and energy. This makes S{\cal S} particularly suited to studying the transition from nonlinear to linear dynamics and for invariant interpretation of numerical results.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figures, Revte

    Let pnp_n denote the nn-th prime, and for any k1k \geq 1 and sufficiently large XX, define the quantity Gk(X):=maxpn+kXmin(pn+1pn,,pn+kpn+k1), G_k(X) := \max_{p_{n+k} \leq X} \min( p_{n+1}-p_n, \dots, p_{n+k}-p_{n+k-1} ), which measures the occurrence of chains of kk consecutive large gaps of primes. Recently, with Green and Konyagin, the authors showed that G1(X)logXloglogXloglogloglogXlogloglogX G_1(X) \gg \frac{\log X \log \log X\log\log\log\log X}{\log \log \log X} for sufficiently large XX. In this note, we combine the arguments in that paper with the Maier matrix method to show that Gk(X)1k2logXloglogXloglogloglogXlogloglogX G_k(X) \gg \frac{1}{k^2} \frac{\log X \log \log X\log\log\log\log X}{\log \log \log X} for any fixed kk and sufficiently large XX.     Gradual diffusion and punctuated phase space density enhancements of highly relativistic electrons: Van Allen Probes observations

    Abstract The dual-spacecraft Van Allen Probes mission has provided a new window into mega electron volt (MeV) particle dynamics in the Earth\u27s radiation belts. Observations (up to E ~10 MeV) show clearly the behavior of the outer electron radiation belt at different timescales: months-long periods of gradual inward radial diffusive transport and weak loss being punctuated by dramatic flux changes driven by strong solar wind transient events. We present analysis of multi-MeV electron flux and phase space density (PSD) changes during March 2013 in the context of the first year of Van Allen Probes operation. This March period demonstrates the classic signatures both of inward radial diffusive energization and abrupt localized acceleration deep within the outer Van Allen zone (L ~4.0 ± 0.5). This reveals graphically that both competing mechanisms of multi-MeV electron energization are at play in the radiation belts, often acting almost concurrently or at least in rapid succession.     Tolerance to Hairy Chinch Bug Feeding in Kentucky Bluegrass

    Seventeen Kentucky bluegrass, Poa pratensis L., cultivars were evaluated for tolerance to feeding by adult hairy chinch bugs, Blissus leucopterus hirtus Montandon. Adults were confined on one month-old plants within a 10 cm diam × 20.3 cm high cylindrical plastic cage for 17-19 days. Cages were divided longitudinally so that 1/2 of the plants in each pot were infested. Tolerance was evaluated as differences between infested and uninfested plants for height of regrowth, dry weight, yield of clippings, root length and weight, plant survival, tillering, and % dry matter. Regrowth, yield of clippings, root length, and plant survival were significantly reduced and % dry matter significantly increased in almost all cases by adult feeding. Dry weight, root weight, and tillering of plants were not significantly changed by feeding. Significant differences were found in tolerance among Kentucky bluegrass cultivars.     The composition of the sub-15 nm particles in six related vanadium high strength low alloy steels, made by simulated thin slab direct charged casting, has been determined using electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Such particles are considered to be responsible for dispersion hardening. For the first time, particles down to 4 nm in size have had their composition fully determined. In all the steels, the particles were nitrogen and vanadium rich and possibly slightly sub-stoichiometric carbonitrides. Equilibrium thermodynamics predicted much higher carbon to metal atomic ratios than observed in all cases so that kinetics and mechanical deformation clearly control the precipitation process. Thus it is important to formulate the steel with this in mind
