Prospects for computing airfoil aerodynamics with Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes codes
The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically for a variety of transonic airfoil configurations where viscous phenomena are important. Illustrative examples include flows past sensitive geometries, Reynolds number effects, and buffet phenomena
A holistic multimodal approach to the non-invasive analysis of watercolour paintings
A holistic approach using non-invasive multimodal imaging and spectroscopic techniques to study the materials (pigments, drawing materials and paper) and painting techniques of watercolour paintings is presented. The non-invasive imaging and spectroscopic techniques include VIS-NIR reflectance spectroscopy and multispectral imaging, micro-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). The three spectroscopic techniques complement each other in pigment identification. Multispectral imaging (near infrared bands), OCT and micro-Raman complement each other in the visualisation and identification of the drawing material. OCT probes the microstructure and light scattering properties of the substrate while XRF detects the elemental composition that indicates the sizing methods and the filler content . The multiple techniques were applied in a study of forty six 19th century Chinese export watercolours from the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to examine to what extent the non-invasive analysis techniques employed complement each other and how much useful information about the paintings can be extracted to address art conservation and history questions
High temperature static strain gage development contract, tasks 1 and 2
Results are presented for the first two tasks to develop resistive strain gage systems for use up to 1250 K on blades and vanes in gas turbine engines under tests. The objective of these two tasks was to further improve and evaluate two static strain gage alloys identified as candidates in a previous program. Improved compositions were not found for either alloy. Further efforts on the Fe-11.9Al-10.6Cr weigth percent alloy were discontinued because of time dependent drift problems at 1250 K in air. When produced as a 6.5 micrometer thick sputtered film, the Pd-13Cr weight percent alloys is not sufficiently stable for this use in air at 1250 K and a protective overcoat system will need to be developed
On the H emission from the Cephei system
Be stars, which are characterised by intermittent emission in their hydrogen
lines, are known to be fast rotators. This fast rotation is a requirement for
the formation of a Keplerian disk, which in turn gives rise to the emission.
However, the pulsating, magnetic B1IV star Cephei is a very slow
rotator that still shows H emission episodes like in other Be stars,
contradicting current theories. We investigate the hypothesis that the
H emission stems from the spectroscopically unresolved companion of
Cep. Spectra of the two unresolved components have been separated in
the 6350-6850\AA range with spectro-astrometric techniques, using 11 longslit
spectra obtained with ALFOSC at the Nordic Optical Telescope, La Palma. We find
that the H emission is not related to the primary in Cep, but
is due to its 3.4 magnitudes fainter companion. This companion has been
resolved by speckle techniques, but it remains unresolved by traditional
spectroscopy. The emission extends from about 400 to +400 km s. The
companion star in its 90-year orbit is likely to be a classical Be star with a
spectral type around B6-8. By identifying its Be-star companion as the origin
of the H emission behaviour, the enigma behind the Be status of the
slow rotator Cep has been resolved.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Accepted by A&A Letter
Semileptonic Decay Scalar Form Factor and from Lattice QCD
We present a new study of D semileptonic decays on the lattice which employs
the Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action for both the charm and the
light valence quarks. We work with MILC unquenched lattices and
determine the scalar form factor for
semileptonic decays. The form factor is obtained from a scalar current matrix
element that does not require any operator matching. We develop a new approach
to carrying out chiral/continuum extrapolations of . The method uses
the kinematic "" variable instead of or the kaon energy and is
applicable over the entire physical range. We find in the chiral plus
continuum limit and hereby improve the theory error on this quantity by a
factor of 4 compared to previous lattice determinations. Combining the
new theory result with recent experimental measurements of the product from BaBar and CLEO-c leads to the most
precise direct determination of the CKM matrix element to date,
, where the first error comes from experiment and the
second is the lattice QCD theory error. We calculate the ratio and find GeV and show
that this agrees with experiment.Comment: 23 pages, 31 figures, 11 tables. Added a paragraph in sction VII, and

A Two Stage Approach to Spatiotemporal Analysis with Strong and weak cross Sectional Dependence
An understanding of the spatial dimension of economic and social activity requires methods that can separate out the relationship between spatial units that is due to the effect of common factors from that which is purely spatial even in an abstract sense. The same applies to the empirical analysis of networks in general. We are able to distinguish between cross sectional strong dependence and weak dependence. Strong dependence in turn suggests that there are common factors. we use cross unit averages to extract common factors and contrast this to a principal components approach widely used in the literature. We then use a multiple testing procedure to determine significant bilateral correlations (signifying connections) between spatial units and compare this to an approach that just uses distance to determine units that are neighbours. We apply these methods to real house price changes at the level of Metropolitan statistical Areas in the USA, and estimate a heterogeneous spatiotemporal model for the de-factored real house price changes and obtain significant evidence of spatial connections, both positive and negative
Effect of possible rotor deformation on the probability of face contact for a liquid film bearing
The possibility of face contact is examined for a coaxial rotor-stator bearing in dynamic motion constrained by a highly rotating very thin liquid film. A modified Reynolds equation for pressurised flow is coupled to the bearing structure leading to determination of the bearing gap from solving a nonlinear second-order non-autonomous ordinary differential equation. Periodic solutions are found via a mapping solver. Rotor deformation is parametrised by a coning angle and considered a random variable. The method of derived distributions is used to quantify variation in coning angle and examine the probability of rotor-stator contact. Additionally, effects of possible destabilising random aspects on the axial rotor oscillations are investigated. Exact solutions for probability of contact are obtained for various bearing configurations.</p
Evaluation of a ln tan integral arising in quantum field theory
We analytically evaluate a dilogarithmic integral that is prototypical of
volumes of ideal tetrahedra in hyperbolic geometry. We additionally obtain new
representations of the Clausen function Cl_2 and the Catalan constant
G=Cl_2(\pi/2), as well as new relations between sine and Clausen function
values.Comment: 24 pages, no figure
