    Hybrid preconditioning for iterative diagonalization of ill-conditioned generalized eigenvalue problems in electronic structure calculations

    The iterative diagonalization of a sequence of large ill-conditioned generalized eigenvalue problems is a computational bottleneck in quantum mechanical methods employing a nonorthogonal basis for {\em ab initio} electronic structure calculations. We propose a hybrid preconditioning scheme to effectively combine global and locally accelerated preconditioners for rapid iterative diagonalization of such eigenvalue problems. In partition-of-unity finite-element (PUFE) pseudopotential density-functional calculations, employing a nonorthogonal basis, we show that the hybrid preconditioned block steepest descent method is a cost-effective eigensolver, outperforming current state-of-the-art global preconditioning schemes, and comparably efficient for the ill-conditioned generalized eigenvalue problems produced by PUFE as the locally optimal block preconditioned conjugate-gradient method for the well-conditioned standard eigenvalue problems produced by planewave methods

    A novel compact, dual layer UWB monopole antenna is presented. This low profile ultra-wideband antenna is fed by a 50 ? shielded strip-line with an array of metal vias making the conducting walls. A printed disc monopole with a circular cut is the radiating element. The dual layer, shielded strip line feed allows for integration in multilayer technologies. The ultra-wideband, monopole characteristics of the antenna are confirmed experimentally

    In this paper, I seek to understand who Jesus is, through the lenses of “jun-zi 君子” (best translated as gentleman), a discussion and comparison between the concept of personhood of the jun-zi in Confucianism perspectives and the story of Jesus in the New Testament, I believe there is the possibility and implication to present an excellent image of Jesus the Christ as a jun-zi within Confucian personhood. Jesus, his ethical norm, high moral standard and religious life are like Confucian jun-zi. If we evangelize or evaluate the concepts of traditional Chinese Confucian jun-zi, Jesus would appear as a Chinese face to us

    Ego Eimi Formula and a Sense of Continuity in John’s Gospel Chapter Sixth (Jn 6: v.20, vss.35-58)

    This paper examines John’s Gospel chapter six (vs.20, vss.35-58) in light of the formula “ego eimi” (“I am”) that occurs four times within it. The formula shapes the content of chapter six and gives continuity to the two sections (vss.35-50 and vss.51-58) that have generated theological disagreements. My goal is to demonstrate that the sacramental perspective implicit in the first section is made explicit in the second with ego eimi being the hinge in vs.51. Ego eimi will be shown as revelatory and as developing the eucharistic and sapiential themes of chapter six (vs. 20, vss. 35-58)

    Reflection high-energy electron diffraction patterns of CrSi_2 films on (111) silicon

    Highly oriented films of the semiconducting transition metal silicide, CrSi2, were grown on (111) silicon substrates, with the matching crystallographic faces being CrSi_2(001)/Si(111). Reflection high‐energy electron diffraction (RHEED) yielded symmetric patterns of sharp streaks. The expected streak spacings for different incident RHEED beam directions were calculated from the reciprocal net of the CrSi_2(001) face and shown to match the observed spacings. The predominant azimuthal orientation of the films was thus determined to be CrSi_2〈210〉∥Si〈110〉. This highly desirable heteroepitaxial relationship may be described with a common unit mesh of 51 Å^2 and a mismatch of −0.3%. RHEED also revealed the presence of limited film regions of a competing azimuthal orientation, CrSi_2〈110〉∥Si〈110〉. A new common unit mesh for this competing orientation is suggested; it possesses an area of 612 Å^2 and a mismatch of −1.2%

    Canonical Representation Genetic Programming

    Search spaces sampled by the process of Genetic Programming often consist of programs which can represent a function in many different ways. Thus, when the space is examined it is highly likely that different programs may be tested which represent the same function, which is an undesirable waste of resources. It is argued that, if a search space can be constructed where only unique representations of a function are permitted, then this will be more successful than employing multiple representations. When the search space consists of canonical representations it is called a canonical search space, and when Genetic Programming is applied to this search space, it is called Canonical Representation Genetic Programming. The challenge lies in constructing these search spaces. With some function sets this is a trivial task, and with some function sets this is impossible to achieve. With other function sets it is not clear how the goal can be achieved. In this paper, we specifically examine the search space defined by the function set {+, −, ∗, /} and the terminal set {x, 1}. Drawing inspiration from the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, and results regarding the fundamental theorem of algebra, we construct a representation where each function that can be constructed with this primitive set has a unique representation

    Investigation of a Switchable Textile Communication System on the Human Body

    In this paper, a switchable textile communication system working at 2.45 GHz ISM band is presented and studied for different locations within a realistic on-body environment. A 3D laser scanner is used to generate a numerical phantom of the measured subject to improve the accuracy of the simulations which are carried out for different body postures. For the off-body communications, the system is acting as an aperture coupled microstrip patch antenna with a boresight gain of 1.48 dBi. On-body communication is achieved by using a textile stripline, which gives approximately 5 dB transmission loss over 600 mm distance. The system is switched between on and off-body modes by PIN diodes. Common issues, such as shape distortion and body detuning effects which the textile antenna may experience in realistic use are fully discussed. Robust antenna performance is noted in the on-body tests, and an additional 3 dB transmission coefficient deduction was noticed in the most severe shape distortion case
